Hi everyone,
I'm going to get a new macbook and put a 250 GB HD in it.
Does anyone know which of the following is better, and why?
1) 250GB 2.5" Western DIgital Scorpio 5400RPM SATA Notebook Drive with 8MB Cache ($177.99)
2) 250GB 2.5" Hitachi Travelstar 5K250 5400RPM SATA Notebook Drive with 8MB Cache ($199.99)
Thanks!

I am very interested in this also I would love to upgrade my HDD. I have read about the Scorpio and that is it the quietest 2.5" drive and that it runs at 5400 RPM but uses the power consumption of the slower 4200 RPM drives, definitely a plus when you are installing it in a laptop.
I have not herd much about the Hitachi but I think I will look into it.
If you want 320GB WD Scorpio check this out- link! (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=377)

Hi CADer...thanks. I will probably get the Western Digital. I would get the 320 if I could find anybody that is selling it!

Yeah sorry about that I just tried to find a retailer after I posted and no luck! I will keep trying though!
I re-linked the link now it goes to the WD site where it has a list of local retailers, but still no dice!
Oh! and where did you find that price on the WD Scorpio drive?

I found the price at macsales.com.
Did you find out if and where you can buy the 320 GB yet?

So far all the sites say the the WD site store is the only place but I don't see a and to cart so i assume that it is sold out at the moment at least thats what I understand.

Not exactly what you asked for but a week ago I installed a Hitachi 200G 7200 rpm in my Macbook pro. It’s fast and very quiet with a 5 year warranty, I think. You can get about any drive from Newegg which has VG service, and prices and has user reviews of most products they sell. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=14&N=2010150014

The only thing I would be careful about the WD drives is the reports on NewEgg regarding the 250GB Scorpio. If you read the 69 or so reviews, approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of them are pertaining to return the drives due to them failing S.M.A.R.T. status. It appears that the drives work fine for a few weeks or couple of months, and then start failing.
Personally, I wouldn't go near the 320GB Scorpio until there's some reports of it lasting without failing S.M.A.R.T. within weeks/months.

I have posted this before. The WD for me has been a great drive.
Also this has been the lowest price so far. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WD2500BEVS-NDW&cat=HDD
ZipZoom fly has it for 164.00 USD with free shipping as an alternative.

I installed the 250GB WD drive in my MBP last night. No problems and it appears fast to me.... although I have been using a powerbook with a 4200RPM drive so anything seems faster to me!
