I just got a lightly used G5 Dual processor 2.0Ghz G5. It's big, It's pretty, but can it run? I haven't hooked it up yet. And I'm coming from one of the latest Dell PC's. I do some photo work and home video editing. I'm also getting a new MBP 2.2 ordered this week. This is one of the last gen G5 Units. How do you think it would compare to say the newer Intel iMacs? Is my new MBP going to embarass it? I know nothing of the G5. It has a dedicated video card, that's good. But is it a late model dinosaur in light of C2D processors from Intel?

It's not a slow machine by any means. CPU-wise it is roughly equal to the early Apple Intel machines.

It can hold up to 8/16GB of ram, and multiple desktop hard drives. So if that is a factor in your work, that G5 machine is perfect. Pure CPU speed is not everything, not to mention desktops can take more of a beating as they do not have the cooling concerns of a laptop. Desktop drives and ram are always cheaper than notebook drives or ram, too.
So answer: it depends.

The MBP I'm ordering scored 2882
Even a late model Mac Mini hit 2574! That's sad.
I won't call the G5 a doorstop, but I guess I'm better off doing amateur video/photo editing with the MBP.

I have done plenty of professional video editing on the dual 2 G5. We were editing promos to deadlines on G4s in OS9 not that long ago! Obviously it is smoother on our new MacPros and I can't wait to get my hands on the upcoming revision. Still, the dual G5 is a nice bit of kit. In fact I am typing on one right now...

I did quite well with my dual 800 G4 a few years ago, currently on a dual 2.7 and have no issues. Your only concern should be if it's water cooled or not...
If you must dump it, make sure it's on my front door 
You can still flog it on eBay for a not insignificant amount. In Australia they are still going for a good AUD$1000-1200.

Actually, the Dual Core (Single Processor) G5 hit 1828. The DP G5 2.0ghz hit 1743 to 1688 depending on version
So yeah its not 'completely' useless from a CPU perspective, but it is what most people would call 'slow' or obsolete.
