Is this possible: mask out black from lower-thirds captured from tape?

Hi all, I have a lower-thirds music vid credit sequence that was captured out of premiere on tape. is there a way to take that clip into FCP2 and use on another clip, by somehow masking out the black background behind the l3rd animation? or do i need to recreate it from scratch? thx...

can't u use a travel matte to replace the black with something else? :confused:
