Continuation of the previous Picture of the Day (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=204316)

Thought it would be fun to share one of your best every day - doesn't matter what it is, just as long as it is decent (no nudes or overly graphic shots). You can add a picture everyday as long as it is different.

It does not matter when the picture was taken, as long as you only post ONE SINGLE IMAGE per day. Make sure to post a date, location and description.

Please use this format when posting:

Blue Angels Flight Demonstration, U.S. Naval Academy/Severn River 5/24/06

And if you like, post your EXIF data, so others may learn if they want to - but please use the following format (optional). If you do not know what you have or only have a couple of bits, post those, but in the order listed below, leaving out the titles of what you do not have, please.

Just out of curiosity... why the continuation? Was the original thread getting too large?

Not going to question the continuation. Not even a great picture. I just wanted to be first. This is from when some Buddhist monks came by the University to create some art for us. Really bad light, and no tripod, but here it is.

Abstract
Nov 4, 2007, 07:58 PM
Despite the fact that large threads are split up into multiple pages, it actually takes up more "resources" (don't know the technical words to describe it) for you to go into a single page of the Picture of the Day, with only 20 posts in it, than it is for me to go into another thread with only 20 total posts in it.

So basically, the amount of resources used is dependent on the size of the thread itself, and not just the number of posts in the particular page you want to look at.

This happened once before on a board I used to go to many years ago, and that was the explanation we were given back then.

Yep. basically. When the server loads a page of a thread with 8000 replies, it has to sort through all of those.

Wow. Great photograph. What film was this?

I'm with Seenew, digital has a long way to go before it even starts to catch up to film...thats why I almost always grab my Nikon F3 and some Tri-x over my D80.

Thanks to both of you... I believe the film was Illford Hp5+ 400, although I also used Tri-x for a while. The only way I can be sure is to dig through my negative archives and find the actual negative used for the print.

I was hesitant to post this at first because of the "blown" highlights, but since I was going for the "sidelit" effect with no fill flash I knew the light source would be overexposed, and liked the look. Much of my film shooting ventured into serious backlighting and strong sidelighting, creating some interesting specular highlights and difficult contrast situations - which made the photographs more interesting, at least in my mind... :) I do like the look of b/w film, including the variations of the grain from changing film. Tri-x looks a lot like HP5, T-Max 400 looks more glassy, and Ilford Delta 400 has it's own look... I also played around with overexposing Plus-x 125, or doing shots into harsh backlighting, and doing a very diluted, longer development (with very gentle agitation) using the old classic German developer, Rodinal, to capture more shadow detail, and tone down the highlights. Usually the tonal range of the film was pretty extensive, and the contrast had to be bumped while printing to find the right balance....

Anyway, I babble on... but film is fun, and demanding - digital is fast. Some parallels to music. Analog vs. digital. I love them both.

Seenew: Really nice work with the polaroids - very artistic and beautiful results...

Taken on campus at Portland State University near the end of the 1995 Pacific Rim Economic Conference which was held there for two days in June, 1995. In this shot Clinton addresses a large crowd which had waited hours to hear him speak. The lighting was tricky (extreme contrast,) since it was severe sidelighting with the sun at a low angle, yet in the shade of the elm trees of the South Park Blocks. The SS gave me about 1 minute from this spot. Scanned from a work print (print done on RC paper meant to be scanned, not displayed...) Please: No politics, pro or con, on the subject. This was strictly non-partisan journalism :)

I love this! Do the people you take pics of ever see you and get pissed? I really want to do more of this kind of photography but i'm afraid people will get pissed!

They sometimes see me, but I've never had anyone confront me about it. You get mixed reactions. Some people smile, some look at you funny and some just plain ignore you. Depends how you look I guess. A lot of the time I'm in uniform so maybe the fact I'm a student makes them nicer to me. Don't go out and take photos while looking really shady. This will just make people suspicious and less welcoming.

That's actually a really good picture. There's something Kennedy-esqe about it.

Okay, so this is the first picture I have ever posted for others to see online - be nice. I used a crappy digital P&S, and then Picasa to make it B&W. Taken at a restaurant in Athens, Ga where my wife and I were eating.

I used to shoot a lot of photos with an SLR, but bills came, I sold all my equipment and went back to school to try to start my 3rd career. Now I am about halfway through school and am taking pictures that aren't just candids of friends again (with my crappy P&S) and loving it. May have to step up to a DSLR soon.

what process are you using when you just use one raw file? I can never make mine come out decent at all (on the occasion when I try for an HDR look)

1) I will import the RAWs into Aperture, and then split them into three different exposures - One overexposed by usually +2 exposure bias, one -2, and the original for the midrange exposure.

2) Export those versions as TIFFs with no metadata.

3) Go into Photomatix Pro and merge those differently exposed TIFFs, adjusting the levels in the HDR Photomatix editor as needed for the desired artistic and/or practical needs.

A bubble in the backyard, taken with a EOS rebel XT.How soon after the shot did the bubble burst? :p It's quite a fun image. Interesting juxtaposition between the sphere of the bubble and that sharp line of the grass (?).

I agree that it's a bit too blurred. Definitely preferred your last post more. But to me it looks like one or two people standing with a boat or a house or something in the background.

If I photoshopped those in then I'd really need some help haha, just a very long inclined walkway up a large hill to an art museum, I think it was a part of it, what I capture was only 1/3 of the switchback madness.

Thanks a lot. I do have a converted camera, but it didn't arrive in time for my trip, so it's sitting in a box, unused in Korea.
I found a place in Hong Kong, though that had IR filters (Tim Cheung in Tsim Sha Tsui), so I got a small one and old lens that is supposed to be a good one for IR. So far, pretty happy, but the long exposure times are limiting.

A single tug tows a log raft upstream, north of Willamette Falls at Oregon City, as it heads for the locks to get around the falls. The locks, run by the US Army Corps. of Engineers, are located just to the right of the Simpson paper plant, and the old Smurfit newsprint plant is on the left. Especially if you quote the post w/ the image in question, clicking the little blue arrow (this guy: http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/buttons/viewpost.gif) takes you directly back to that post (where you can see the image).

I like how anyone with a camera that takes a black and white picture is suddenly a photographer.

Who are you to judge?

A photographer is anyone who takes pictures with a camera. It doesn't matter if it's b/w, colour, IR etc. This digital photography forum is open to macrumors members of all ages and abilities. So, yes if a member took a b/w photo and posted it in this thread then they are a photographer.

I like how your first post in this thread and the digital photography forum is entirely negative. Why don't you post a photo and contribute something rather than just slagging other people's work off.

Anyway...here's mine for today.

This is a photo of the Eccles Olympic Legacy Bridge in Salt Lake City, Utah. It spans a road on the University of Utah campus and is the bridge the athletes of the 2002 winter games walked across on their way to and from the opening and closing ceremonies. Now their housing has been converted to Student apartments and that's where I'm living while I finish up school.

I didn't notice the highlights of the tip of the bridges tower when I took the shot. If I had, I would have metered against that part and avoided the blown out look it has, but the rest of the image I'm quite pleased with. Enjoy!

Whoa! Tons of noise man!!

Uhmmm... well, yeah, Bro! Ain't the end of the world. I actually like film grain and digital noise, depending on the subject and light conditions. Did you notice the camera I used? The Canon A95 maxxes out at 400 ISO, and it was a fairly dark place. I took a ton of other shots over several various months in a few other similar venues, and much preferred the "flash off" hand-held slow shutter speed effects - noise and all. It's much more about atmospherics in places like these, and I just tossed all the shots with flash - they looked flat and uninteresting. In the end, I'd rather use as much available light as I can muster, very high ISO (depending on the camera,) and let the noise/grain fall where it may in exchange for additional sharpness. You may differ with this philosophy, and prefer your digital pics to have the smoothness of plastic, but I don't think that would have served this picture.

It just makes me thirsty looking at it, and I swear I can smell the hops...:)

Oblomow: thanx for your appreciation of the pint...
