Thanks. It's sitting on a Cooler Master laptop cooler. Works pretty well - it shaves off between 6-10 degrees off the operating temp depending on what I have going on.

I had one of these for my Vaio, it scratches the laptop though :(

I'm just now using the macbook pro instead of the Mac Mini/Ultra small pc/Macbook Pro plus 24in dell screen.
It much easier on the time I need to maintain the machines with just one to worry about.
Why didn't you want to keep the 24" screen though? I am all for sticking to one computer - life is more difficult with many, unless you keep them explicitly for different things. I used to have a cube, iMac and ibook. Got a MacBook and think I will be getting a MacBook Pro at the next revision.

I umm'd and arr'd about the screen, but after using a smaller screen for a lan party the weekend before on my pc. I didn't miss the bigger screen at all. I can honestly say that I've not missed it all since doing the clearout. With leopard's spaces I get a far more useful multi monitor setup without the desk space being taken up.
The next time the mbp's get a big update I will look to replacing my mbp and then I may get an apple cinema display as well, but I doubt it.

Hey im lookin to ge the 24" dell screen. Is the quality on par with the ACD?
Oh God here we go again...that's never been asked on these forums before...
Let me summarize:
"Yes, it's as good as the Apple."
"No it's not you noob!!! ALL monitors that aren't made by Apple SUCK!"
"Actually some of them use the same panels, so they're mostly comparable. Plus you get more inputs and adjustments with the Dell for less money."
"The ACDs have higher quality control so you're less likely to get uneven lighting and dead pixels...but yeah you're gonna pay almost twice as much. The Dells are really nice monitors but if you can afford it get the ACD."
"I'm a professional and I know that if you don't use an ACD then your work sucks because no other monitor can possibly be calibrated as well and I'm a professional and everything I say is right and OH MY GOD IT'S ALUMINUM AND MATCHES MY MAC PRO! HOW COULD YOU NOT BUY IT?!?!"
There, I just saved us two pages of pain and suffering. :p

I know that Apple products don't tend to follow the constant price diminishment of other electronic equipment, but surely even with Apple the prices could drop in the space of the month still to go before Xmas? Or does Apple really keep it's prices set in stone despite the ageing of the equipment & the constantly changing state of the market (I don't check Apple prices so I don't know)?

Yeah, Apple do tend to keep their prices in stone. Devaluation only begins once a new revision is introduced.

The eMac was such an awesome computer. I don't know if it's because mine was my first Mac or what, but I love the design so much. I've heard a lot of people saying they don't like 'em, but I think they are some of the coolest looking Macs around. I may end up getting another one sometime down the road. Maybe get one for my Mom or something.

One of the reasons I'm getting my grandmother a new iMac for Christmas is so that I can snag her old 800 MHz eMac. I've had the boards go on the 1.0 and 1.25 that I had, I really miss not having an eMac around right now.

Our eMac that we got for making movies a few years ago lives peacefully with our Dell (which doesn't get used very often, haha, we use it only to play games).
The iMac is my little sister's. She does a lot of animation for her art classes.
Mine is the hot, sexy MacBook Pro. Currently only being used for writing papers but come winter break... booya! I'll be working with my photographs and organizing my mom's extensive collection :D.

Okay, I wish I had as much room as most of you, but here's my crammed setup.
I have:
* A Macbook 2.0ghz 1 GB RAM (Running Tiger. I know, outdated!)
* A HP Monitor, mainly used for iTunes, or Web editing if I'm doing it. (The Mac's screen is SO much nicer...)
* 30 GB 5.5G iPod "Classic"
* XtremeMac Tango Speakers
* iomega 500 GB External HDD
All in all, a fairly decent setup. I just hooked up the HP monitor today, so I'm still working out the setup. The Tango Speakers beat the Macbook speakers by a long shot, and the HDD is great for backups. The desk is wide enough to where I can sit at my Macbook comfortably, with the HP monitor to the side.

The Macbook pro is a lot more responsive than the iMac is. I put 3gigs of RAM in both and Aperture/Handbrake are faster on the Macbook Pro.
I did do a fresh install of leopard on the Macbook pro though, and just an upgrade on the iMac. That could possibly have something to do with it. Both are awesome though.
What screensaver is that? It's awesome!
I am not sure, but it is one of the presets offered in Leopard. It may even be in Tiger as well :)

SUB. ON. THE. FLOOR. NOW!!
Lol, its brand new, one of the main reasons why my desk is a mess, so I haven't homed it yet.
Why should the sub go on the floor, am I about to rip a hole in the space time continuum or something?

Yes. You are :(
The sub is designed for bass response. If the sub is on the desk, the area underneath your desk turns into a horrible echo-chamber.
If the sub is on the floor, you get the benefit of feeling the bass through your feet and the floorboards.

Nov 28, 2007, 03:26 PM
Why should the sub go on the floor, am I about to rip a hole in the space time continuum or something?
Because a subwoofer is an omnidirectional sound source, meaning you don't have to have it pointed right at you to get the right sound. In fact, as others have pointed out, if you have it pointed right at you you're diminishing the effect, not making it better. It needs to be on the floor, ideally in a corner, but definitely NOT on a desk, table, or any other raised surface that can become a crappy source of vibration. I've never understood what makes people think these big subs are supposed to go on top of their desks.

Yeah, I have the same set and I'm very happy with them for the money. They're not quite as good as the Z-5500 5.1 set I had before, but they're much more compact (which was the reason I ditched the 5.1s). Good value.

They can, however, screw up CRT displays...just in case anyone is still using those :p
I still use a CRT! What sounds even more ironic is that I have 3x LCDs sitting under the bed un-used! Well, the CRT is a 20" Triniton, which would probably look better than 90% of LCDs on the market atm if it wasn't so worn out (it doesn't go bright enough any more, so I have to run with brightness flat out at 100% which washes out the colours a bit).

Budget would be mega handy, 2.1 setups range from £15 to several hundreds. Of course (depending on budget) you'd probably be better off with a proper 2.0 setup rather than an PC 2.1 setup.
Hmm, I'm probably not gonna be in the market for 'em for a while, but I'd say around $100-150 would be my budget.
They don't have to be 2.1's, but I'd LOVE them to be compact, so that's why I figured I'd have to go with 2.1's. Since this is a Mac setups thread, I'll go ahead and throw up a pic of my setup, so that you can get a good idea of the little bit of space I'm working with. Since this pic was taken, I've added an iPod dock for my 4th Gen. iPod to the left of the iMac.

As you can see, I don't have much space to work with. I need to take some updated setup pics, but it's late and I don't feel like it right now. :p

I'll agree with the anti-Bose sentiment when it comes to their consumer line up, but I'm always impressed with the systems I see in concert venues/clubs.
I loved the 8 x 4.5" cabs they did/do. Coupled with their old bass cabs they were fantasic when I used to DJ. I'm guessing the modern versions of them sound even better.
The consumer stuff doesn't cut it for me though.

Thanks for the suggestion. Did a bit of looking around and while those look like awesome speakers, they're not compact enough. Maybe I should just get a bigger desk? :p
Seriously, though, what I need is something similar to the JBL Creature II's. (small satellite speakers and small sub) My only gripe with those was that the power button was on the sub, which didn't make any sense to me at all. Honestly I'd recommend the creature II's they are small, sound great, and you can get them to match your mac to a T. Right now I am using a pair of Creatives (I-Trigue (http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=27&product=139)), they are pretty small about $80 and sound great..but the sub is huge (in comparison) and really heavy..

Kaiser, what kind of 'stand' are you using? I've never seen it before. All I've ever seen is the iCurve, elevator, and the mStand.
It looks like a $305 USD Balmuda (http://balmuda.net/products/c/floater/index.html) Floater stand. I guess money isn't too much of an issue :p
I'll confirm that. I think I've only seen two instances, including this one, where someone shelled out the cash for it. There are some threads on macrumors regarding this uber-expensive stand. To save you some time, here's the cheaper option:

Thanks for the suggestion. Did a bit of looking around and while those look like awesome speakers, they're not compact enough.
Seriously, though, what I need is something similar to the JBL Creature II's. (small satellite speakers and small sub) My only gripe with those was that the power button was on the sub, which didn't make any sense to me at all. I'm not in a big hurry to get speakers, so I'm open to more suggestions if anyone has any.
What about these "JBL Spot Powered Satellite Speakers and Subwoofer"? I haven't seen them in the real, but they look similarly sized to the creature II's (don't know where the power button is on these but I think the volume definitely isn't on the sub). :)

they are not on the subwoofer, they are on the satellites, i tryed those out, they are pretty good, but i would pick bose companion 2s, i have those, i thought they were terrible, i was comparing them to the jbl spots... i was wrong, then i compared them to the creatures...... lets just say that bose is the best for its level and size, and pretty cheap

You mean companion 3's. The 2's are 2 stand alone monitor speakers without a sub. I have the 3s and have to say they are awesome. The clarity and punch I get is mesmerizing considering how small the speakers are. You can take them off the stand also; which is the way I have them

... i know the difference, maybe i should restate, the bose companion 2's are relatively small speakers, with a subwoofer built in, and awesome sound quality but they do not compare to the bose companion 3's, i was going to get those, but after seeing the power of the 2's in the store, im good, its really good, i have to say, the subwoofer is as powerful as a seperate unit, i used to have three piece, the sub built in is EXTREME. and FadetoBlack wants something in the price range of $100-$150, although 2's are on the bottom, of that price range, its quality tops the JBL spots, and creatures, in quality of speaker (material, durability), sound quality, efficiency, i have tryed all three including, the bose companion 3, the bose's were on the top, those spots and creatures were literally hidious, but to my opinion, nobody take me for wrong on that, the speakers will crackle if you bring your phone next to it, though the bose does the same, but you basically need to make it touch the speakers. and that does not mean the 2's beat the 3's, it means that JBL apparently, but maybe the ones in the store were bad, didnt compare to the bose, and the bose companion 3 was awing, but for what i saw, and heard:rolleyes:, bose companion 2 was enough, im glad i didnt spurt out the extra 150 bucks, i like what i got, anyways, back on topic with the setups:D

Already posted my set-up, but just want to show a closer shot of the yellow sticker on my MBP. It's a "hello" sticker on the power button. It's like saying hello to my mac whenever I power it up. Are there any threads for this? Like personal touches to your macs.

I'm pretty sure that I stated earlier in the thread that my previous set of speakers were the Companion 2's. While they were good sounding speakers, I didn't think they sounded anywhere near as good as my old Altec Lansing 2100's, which were 2.1's.
If the Creature II's had a power button on one of the satellite speakers, they would definitely be my pick. They are the perfect size and match the Mac wonderfully. I loved the look of them.
Looks like I have a lot of choices when it comes to speakers. As I said, though, I'm just gonna keep looking around and get some eventually. Oddly enough, I'm actually pretty content with the iMac's built-in speakers. I didn't expect them to sound as good as they do.
I appreciate all the suggestions. Thanks, everybody.

They actually only use one driver (the part that moves) to create all the sound that you hear. It's really impressive how much bass and clarity in the highs these speakers can produce, especially from a single driver.

Most of these systems with 'subwoofers' don't have any form of subwoofer at all.
A subwoofer requires another kind of woofer to act above it (hence the 'subwoofer' name). Most of these 2.1 systems don't have any normal woofers, just 'subwoofers' and a pair of midrange/treble drivers (often a single cone).
The result is that you end up with a standard 'woofer', rather than a subwoofer. The end result is that you can hear exactly where the 'subwoofer' is, and ultimately the 'subwoofer' doesn't go as low as a subwoofer should. The other bi-product of these sorts of designs is that you end up with a huuuuge frequency gap in-between the woofer and satellites. This may not sound like much, but to give you an idea. If you played a tone starting very low, and ending up very high (a frequency sweep), there would be a point where you would hear NO sound at all. Not just 'slightly bad sound', but a huge amount of sound missing alltogether, and sound which is very very important.
The only reason 2.1 systems exist is because people don't listen closely enough. A good pair of 2.0 speakers are massively superior to any 2.1 system you'll find.
For the OP's budget, I'd recommend a pair of Samson Resolv 40As. linky (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Resolv40a/)
http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/215/Resolv40a.jpg
MASSIVELY superior to pretty much every 2.1 system on the market.
Really, take my advise.

Dude, do you have any idea how wrong you are? There are plenty of 2.1 systems, as you say any - I'm talking twin JBL studio monitors paired with their $900 subwoofer - that will blow away, mop the floor, cover in feces plenty of high-end 2.0 systems.
Also, if you're referring to the Bose 2.1 systems, aimed at multimedia and computers, then there is in fact no sound gap, at least in their Companion 3's, which I have owned. I have verified this by going to www.realmofexcursion.com and taking and browsing through, finding, and playing sine sweeps that cover any gaps that would lie in a poor 2.1 system.
Now using KRK studio monitors which are quite a step up.
Think before you speak man. I'm quite surprised as your previous posts about Bang & Ofulsen and you owning Bowers and Wilkins speakers lead me to believe you knew plenty to know that there are plenty of exceedingly high quality 2.1 systems out there that are comparable to many high-end floor-standing systems.
Peace

Oh yes there are plenty of good subwoofer/satellite packages out there. However, when people refer to 2.1 systems, they tend to mean piddly little fist-sized or smaller satellite speakers and subwoofers no bigger than a shoebox.
Sure you can get some really awesome systems out there with a pair of bookshelves/near-fields and a subwoofer. Genelec make some of the best sounding 'sub/sat' packages I've heard, and there are plenty others doing a really impressive job of it.
I don't regard them as 2.1 systems tho. 2.1 systems = a speaker system in which the subwoofer is needed. A good sub/sat package should be able to work fine without the subwoofer. If not, something is seriously wrong.
I use a system with a subwoofer for my computer speakers, a pair of bi-amped 70 watt bookshelf speakers, and an el-cheapo 100 watt Yamaha subwoofer. It sounds very very good considering as it's a computer system, and while I wouldn't want to swap it for my hifi or bookshelf B&W speakers, it's perfectly good for listening to music.
Which KRKs you got? They make some pretty awesome monitors...

You do indeed have a very good understanding of audio. One example where you need a subwoofer, yet get sound that many audiophiles would be happy without a floor standing system would be a setup from www.orbaudio.com or www.roundsound.com.
I am running two KRK ST-6 monitors driven by a Kenwood receiver at the moment. Even running these studio monitors without a sub-par amp (contrast to dedicated two channel amplifiers) these speakers sound amazing. The transparency, imaging, and sound-stage representation is awing.
I would consider the ST passive series as more of their V-series, but with out an amp. The ST passive series easily excels past their RP series.
As a replacement amplifier I'm looking at the Behringer A500: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17004
Any suggestions?

I highly recommend it. I bought an XBOX 360 and a Samsung 22" Monitor (behind me with 5.1 for the XBOX). I was going to take back the ACD... tried the Samsung and just couldn't do it. It's gorgeous and 20" is a lot (I know the 30" beast is enormous, but c'mon!).

Thanks :) Was quite expensive - the UK isn't cheap! I traded my MacBook for the PowerBook and had enough left over to get a 250GB HDD and some RAM.
The Mac Mini was an impromptu purchase and is now my main computer. I opened it up last night and went for 2GB RAM and 160GB HDD. The Lacie HDD (250 FW400) I have had for over a year and it's great.
The ACD was mostly paid for by me, with a little bit of help ($100) from my mum as a birthday present.

The fact that it's a gift has nothing to do with getting through customs. Anything being imported to the UK with a value over about £30 should have import tax and VAT applied. However, quite often items will make it through unnoticed if shipped by Royal Mail. UPS/Fed Ex will normally make you pay the customs charges on delivery (which is annoying if you don't have anything to pay with)

the mobility is due to the fact that these phones work by moving from cell to cell, thus being called cellphones. ;)

@David Ames: Nice setup, similar to my MBP setup while at home. Do you have the USB cable for your cinema display's hub attached to your MBP? Leopard doesn't seem to like them, I've been having wake sleep issues with bus error being shown for the cinema display while plugged in.
There's a long thread on this on the Apple discussion boards, but I was just wondering if you'd experienced this problem.

Its a belkin kvm switch.
Bigger picture of it here: http://images.belkin.com/F1DM102U/PRN1_F1DM102U.jpg
Very good little kvm matches the mini perfectly. I sold mine last week, but only as I've not got multiple machines anymore.

I don't get why there are two ways to plug it in.
One does not have the grounding prong (the third one), and the other does. The one with the grounding prong also is longer so you can use it further away from an outlet. The one without the grounding prong is meant to be more portable, as the cord gets wrapped around the box and the outlet prongs hide within the outlet.

Here is my setup, both ends of my tiny bedroom.
http://www.neilchristie.com/dump/ZZ18EFD90E.jpg
http://www.neilchristie.com/dump/ZZ4BB23E27.jpg
In the setup there is:
Xbox 360
Alba DVB-T Tuner
iPhone (although I used that to take the first picture so please excuse the rubbish quality!)
iMac 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD
MacBook 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD
Samsung LE23R71WX (23 inch LCD TV)
There also is a Miglia TV mini connected to the iMac along with a 320GB Toshiba external hard drive and an HP Deskjet 5740.
Hope everyone likes it, I've spent a lot of time (and wasted a lot of money) getting this the way I want it and now I think it's perfect.
