Nice setup - congrats. You haven't wasted money if it's what you want, surely?

I made a mistake jumping to a Windows Vista machine over the summer (which I sold at a loss to buy the iMac). I really wanted to get back into PC gaming because I love it so much and my old iMac (a 17" Core Duo model) couldn't cope with anything.

I realise now that pretty much every good game is out for Xbox 360 and there isn't much at all exclusively on PC. I do still game on my iMac but the performance is downright miserable.

Oh well, an error of judgement that will not be repeated.

Part of the reason I went to PC was because the iMac that had just come out in August didn't really interest me and I still think it's pretty ugly but I spent all of my time with my MacBook connected to a monitor so I just decided it was time to go back to iMac. I'm missing the ability to stick the remote to the enclosure and also the sleep light. Why on earth would they ditch these?!

Hi,

Current setup:
-BlacBook C2D 2GHz 120GB HDD, 1Gb Ram.
-8GB iPhone.
-30GB 5.5 Gen. iPod.
-Wireless Mighty & Keyboard.
-Sony sound system.
Photo taken with no clue about photography with my sisters Nikon D80 and unprofessionally adjusted it with Aperture, I apologize if its weird looking jeje.
-Victor

you have probably heard it enough times, but is it worth paying the black tax?

How does one roll into money? I just dropped to the floor and rolled but I doubt that was money I hit. ;)

I'd buy a mini for my mom hands down. She got the laptop (not a mac) so technically a nice little mini would do her good.

Seriously, a Mac and a 360 is the best of both worlds in my opinion. A dedicated games machine and a computer that runs OSX - what more could you want?

Sorry it cost you some money getting there, but at least you're there.

I agree - Mac and PS3 here. Now, if they'd release some games worth playing...

Until then my PC, which is in its death-throws can still manage to play Day of Defeat.

iMac and PS3 here too. Yeah - lack of games biggest problem.

COD4 is fricken awesome though. Waiting on Wipeout, Aircombat - and pretty much all the titles that got me INTO the Playstation years ago. FYI - I'm a very slow learner - but recently discovered that my PS3 is a GREAT media center. It now sees movies / music and pics from my iMac AND external HD. I encoded some of my DVDs using HandBrake - and they look GREAT - even on a 52" 1080 Plasma. (and my encode is almost 1/3 the size of the original DVD files) So I stuffed the HD full on that, and use it 10 times more than in the past year. It's also a great space heater when Folding. (which takes place of my gas heat - seriously)

Nice choice going Dell for the dual display.

Until I get a real HD TV for my living room - yeah, I play it off the monitor. It couples into my logitech speakers - which you can't see from that pic, but they surround me front and back.

It's a little TOO comfortable... That's my bed above everything (gigantic loft bed)

Super nice for a cramped apartment - and it provides that I'm-8-years-old-in-my "fort" feel to it.

Not necessarily a good thing. :D

My iMac seems a lot easier to use now that I've gotten it at a cleaner workspace.

I'm looking into a different container to put my CDs, cables, and hard drive in. The one I have now doesn't match the desk and looks off.

I actually didn't like the lamp there at first, but now that it's dark I really like it :D

But when I take a photo at night of my iMac with my Sony Cybershot (not the best camera), the lamp keeps overexposing the image. How can I prevent that?

I think the front end of the 5-series is the sexiest in the lineup. I think it's because the headlights take on the shape of eyes and make the car seem alive. Could do with a nicer rear-end, though. :)

Which reminds me that I should take some pictures of my schools mac classrooms. We had placed our order for new macs and then Apple announced the new macs. We quickly called and were pleased to discover they had shipped us the new ones... so we were probably one of the first schools to get the new macs :) (I work in the I.S. department.. have to pay bills some how)

Yeah, I'm looking for another place to put the shoes. The problems: There are close to forty pair of them, and my studio is only 420 sq ft. It's really my last great problem with the studio. The current solution is "acceptable," but not "ideal."

In this case, function follows form.

If he had a firewire drive that he wanted to connect, don't you think it would be cheaper to buy a 99p extention cable than buy a new monitor to replace what is already a perfectly good monitor?

Dec 12, 2007, 11:10 AM
But we're talking about ACDs!!! (:

Connecting a drive via Firewire to the ACD still wouldn't be an option with the way he has it setup because the ports on an ACD face directly backward, precluding their use when the display is wall-mounted. On the Dells, two USB ports are on the side and two are on the back but face *down*, allowing them to be used no matter how the monitor is mounted.

ACDs are gorgeous monitors, and I have one at work and love it, but I'd be hard-pressed to name another product that does a more complete job of placing form over function. The aforementioned port placement, the buttons on the side that become obscured when you set up a second monitor, the stupid monocable that breaks out far too late so you get really short individual cables, the power brick (seriously, Apple, get with the times), and oh yeah only a SINGLE input. For my setup at work none of those things is a problem, but at home they're deal-killers.

IF he wanted a drive with easy access (which he has no need for) he wouldn't want it on his desk, since everything is wireless. He could run an external drive and mount in on the under side of the desk service so that he could easily hide the cable all the way to the computer...

PowerMac G4 400MHz 640MB Ram (Not pictured)
Sony SDM-N50 15" TFT
Apple Pro Keyboard
Logitech MX518 Mouse
Logitech X-230 Speakers
Canon IP5200 Printer
Xbox 360 Premium connected to my 15" screen with VGA
Logitech Drive FX wheel (in first pic)

And my baby:
MacBook Pro Santa Rosa 2,2GHz Glossy!

In a couple of months I will re-paint my room, get the new keyboard and perhaps inherit an iMac G5 17" 1,6GHz w/ 1GB ram, I'll post new pictures then! ;)

The fact that it was fanless along with the fact that people would use it to stack stuff on top of because of it's ideal shape...this allowed for the machines to overheat, if I remember properly. It's a beautiful design, though.

You made my brain explode. That's a Powerbook Pismo, the last of the Powerbook G3's. It's been upgraded with a 550Mhz G4, though. The box with the Apple logo is the Powermac G4 Cube. It maxed out at 500Mhz back in the day, but you can get dual-1.8Ghz G4 upgrades for it nowadays, and I think they make a single processor 2.0Ghz G4 for it too.

Uh... yeah. Mine is just the 450Mhz, though.

There was no Powerbook G5, btw, they're pulling your leg. The Aluminum Powerbook G4 was the last of the Powerbooks before the MacBook Pro's.

www.apple-history.com is a nice place to go through the different Apple computers over the years. There's a few gems in there, and also a lot of Performas. Avoid those.

You'll need to put it in the "Screen Savers" folder, in the Library. It should appear under "Other" under Screen Saver in System Preferences.

there is no other folder in the screensaver choose section. only 'choose folder' and when i go into that it just is grey everywhere. i can never choose it.

lol no, the french one is my grandma's (she speaks french), i got the wireless keyboard (old one), back before the new one came out for my mbp, it was my old mac at the time, i also got the old wireless mouse with it (the one with grey sides. i the new wired keyboard, and mouse came with my imac, use them, i dont use that old wireless keyboard anymore, the new wireless mouse if for my grandma, and the new wireless keyboard replaces the old one, i hate the old one, i have to pick it up to turn it on and off, so much desk space, so in in short, the french wired, and new wireless, is for my grandma's mb, the old wireless keyboard is just back up, with old wireless mouse and new wireless keyboard is for mbp, and new wired mouse and keyboard is for imac. my mb sits in my grandma's bag, she uses the french keyboard when she's typing to one of her friends in france, and mbp sits on a totally different desk, i just brought it over to the imac desk for the pick, my mbp desk is pretty much empty, mbp, mouse, keyboard, book, lamp, no printer, no external speakers

I think that FLIQLO (http://www.9031.com/downloads/screensavers.html) (the clock one) is very popular because it is a useful screen save and doesn't tax the system too much. For example on my new MB arabesque makes the battery life shoot down.

well, if you think about it, screen savers were originally made so that whatever is on your screen doesnt burn into the LCD, so when you turn off your computer, you will see your desktop still there, or whenever your using it, you can see your desktop on the screen, or whatever burned into your screen while for instance you are browsing. i had that problem once, my screensaver was just an image, the american flag, no movement, left it there for like 12 hours, came back, my screen had the american flag burned into it, screensavers are supposed to move around to keep anything from burning into the LCD, im not sure if the colon blinks in the FLIQLO, if it doesnt, you will have 2 dots on the screen no matter what, and the "1" in "10, 11, 12" o clock may burn into the screens after 3 ours, but i doubt that, but if the colon doesnt blink, and you leave it for a day, i wouldnt use that screen saver:(

LCDs dont get burn in, it was only an issue with CRT screens. An LCD might "remember" an image that has been on it for a long time, but it will go away after a period of being off.

LCDs don't burn in like CRTs do. They do, however, polarize. (which results in a similar after effect as burn-in)

It should take a LOT longer than 12 hours straight to notice any "burn in" on an LCD.

Those "pixel fixing" apps, are actually ideal for helping reverse any polarization bias on the screen. (the jury is out whether or not they actually help stuck pixels, though)

I experienced "burn in" on a Dell LCD at my last job - but the image was static for -- months. (literally)

I beg to differ. I mean the MacBook is "normal" sized. I think his grandparents are ultra small.

I mean, look at the love-seat they're on - it's huge. They should work for furniture store advertisers.

ok, fine, it was up there for a week, and yes, it was a CRT display, this was a long time ago with my first computer, i thought its the same for LCDs:o

cool, looks like you've got the old companion 3's, why did you give up those two dells????? you could have kept one to make a dual display with the imac, that would have been awesome!! i see you have the photoshop magazine, i get those too :)

hey man, make your tags TIMG, instead of IMG, so that they will be smaller, and save space, if people want to enlarge them, they will click on it, see how in the quote above i made them small?

how do you like the mini?
ive rolled into some money and would like to buy my mom one, but she just couldnt have it!

I'm actually using the Mac Mini I just bought a few hours ago for my parents' Christmas gift. I installed Leopard, set up accounts, and am downloading a few apps before I wrap it and throw it under our tree.

This puppy blazes! I got the entry level Mini (1.83Ghz C2D / 1GB Ram / 80GB HDD) and couldn't be happier. I use a Single 1.8Ghz PowerMac G5 and this Mini would kill my computer. After Christmas I'm getting one for myself! I love it so much. It's extremely quiet, blazingly fast, and real freakin' small!

Nothing new under the sun! Before I bought my Mac I had planned identically the same set up - except with both wired mouse and keyboard. The only problem was the first two of those HP monitors I got from Amazon came with defects and then they wouldn't send me any more...I'm waiting before I buy another one...I'l post a pic when I get it - it'll look familiar to you I'm sure ;)

I'm shocked to see so many people using the Mighty Mouse, particularly the wireless one. Here it costs £49.99 and I think it's probably one of the worst products Apple has EVER made. When it's not struggling to track where you want the cursor to be it's getting confused between left and right clicks and it all feels very, very cheap and horrible to me.

Logitech have a slew of better products on the market, as do Microsoft! Mice with a proper shape and real working buttons that don't get confused, no matter how many times you press them!

Sorry, I just really hate to see an awful product doing well. Perhaps if people stopped buying them then Apple would think about their mistake and put the person who worked on the wonderful new keyboards into the mouse team.

For what it's worth - one could be built or rigged with a trip to Ikea, and buying some multi color LEDs. (If you're not afraid to Solder, even cheaper)

They are nice - but knowing there is 10 bucks worth of LEDs in that - kinda makes the price sting a bit too much for me.

Here - Hit Up Ikea - grab whatever Lamp suits your fancy, then hit Think Geek for these to stuff in it. Likely will be nicer (more options design wise), and cost a fraction of the complete unit.

The Royale theme came out in December 2004 and was widely available by for download as a theme from MS by April 2005.

I honestly don't sit at my desk enough to warrant investing in a mac desktop. The only time I spend time on the PC is when I'm playing rFactor (real driving simulator) on the PC. It's the same PC I had 3 years ago with some upgrades. 95% of my computing is done on my PowerBook all over the house.

There's actually quite a few people who really like the mighty mouse.

I'm one of those people.

My first Bluetooth MM died on me a couple of months ago and I got out my old Logitech wireless mouse to use. Well, I just COULD NOT get used to using it after using the Mighty Mouse for so long. I ended up getting in my closet and digging my wired MM out of the iMac's box.

I then ordered a new Bluetooth MM and that's what I've been using since then.

Second one is a Samsung syncmaster. I have one for my XBOX 360. I prefer the higher DPI of the ACD to the syncmaster, so I kept both in the end!

One stupid question, does it come with a DVI cable in the box? Save the extra expense :)
Thanks

Yeah, I forgot to mention it's shareware. Even though I don't use it that much, I felt $15 was a reasonable price for it's ease of use. I'm pretty sure there are alternatives out there if you don't want shareware. Maybe someone else will chime in.

If you use Firefox (I prefer Safari) I believe there's an extension for it that lets you get video from YouTube and other sites. Not sure what it's called, though.

Well, that's your opinion then. I certainly like the mighty mouse more than those pseudo ergonomical shaped crap. After working with the mm for 8-10 hours my hand doesn't hurt. To each their own I guess. ;)

i love my wireless mighty mouse. its comfortable, sleek, responsive, works perfect on my wooden desk and uses one AA battery per month. it never has trouble doing right clicks. the only drawback if you have to lift your left finger to right click. you find yourself getting used to this in no time though and passing on this habit to other mice too.

i cant live without the scroll ball click programmed to exposé and the squeeze for spaces. if i use another mouse on a PC i find myself squeezing and pressing down the scroll wheel franticly realising im not holding my MM. its a great mouse and i expect it to work and it has been for 8 months. you obviously had a faulty one and you could of got it replaced.

Likely will be nicer (more options design wise), and cost a fraction of the complete unit.

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/lights/831e/

I think the thinkgeek route is a better route. Although those lights are sexy. I wish I could put LEDs in my HK soundsticks!

It is a widescreen image, letterboxed to 4:3, and then said 4:3 image is streched to 16:9...

andyfordays has his set displaying the movie like the first image.

The correct way of displaying it, is to tell the source that you have a 16:9 set, then you will have a bigger picture, less bars, more resolution, and most importantly, the correct aspect ratio.

i guessed it was a 20 inch, but then i tried to imagine an ipod mini in front of my 24 and it seemed to take up the same amount of space from the front of the imac as yours did, i should have gone with my instinct:rolleyes:

as for the ipod, heres the best way for a classic, connect the ipod to the imac, format it COMPLETELY, take EVERYTHING off it, including the files that make it work, the actually interface/operating "system" files, so that there is literally no ipod on it, nothing, just a dumb ipod, the take a knife, preferably a pocket knife, or a fork, and SCREW UP THE CONNECTORS!!!! the connecters under the mini so you cant connect it anymore, and if i remember, the 6gb mini had an HD, so throw the damn thing on the floor to destroy it, shake it aggressively, then throw it on the floor again, ill be hoping that you dont have applecare for it, and that its not under warranty, tell your parents that its totally busted, lie a story, and you've got your self a classic, but so that your parents wont be suspicious, if you have any money, try to pay for at least a portion of it;) i hope that helps:D

looks like an ordinary messy desk, nothing to be ashamed of, my desk isnt that messy anymore ever since i got my imac (i dont have room for mess, my big 24 is eating up the space), check out the link in my sig for pix of it
