It would be great to show MacRumour member's Mac setups!

AND even cooler, to see them past and present to show how they've progressed, SO, i shall start

mine goes:

1 • Power Mac G4 350MHz, and still going strong!
2 • Rev A 12" PowerBook G4
3 • eMac 1GHz Superdrive
4 • 1GHz TiBook Superdrive
5 • 12" iBook G4

prior to getting the Power Mac I had a purple iMac though, I wish I had taken photos of it, oh well!

Post photos of your setup! Your current one is great, but past setups too if ya have them!

Wow, forth post!

Anyway, here's my setup:

Well I don't have any pictures of my Mac but here is a list of what I have owned. I will try and get some pics of my current setup:

iMac DV SE from late 1999 Graphite - The logic board died on this guy so I am keeping the case and one day I hope to put a new monitor and a mac mini inside
iBook SE from 2001 Graphte - This was my first mac laptop and I purchased it as a refurb. It was damaged when someone tried to steel my bag off my back.
iBook G3 800MHz lozinge from 2002 - Replaced above iBook and was damaged by some LCD safe cleaning solution
PowerMac GD 1.42GHz DP from 2003 - I got a great deal on this machine when the G5 came out, only got replaced earlier this year
PowerBook 12" from 2005 - This replaced my iBook untill some till git decided to throw my laptop bag onto the floor on a train because he couldn't reach his own bag!
MacBook Pro 1.83Ghz - Replaced PowerBook and is still in use.
Mac mini 1.6GHz Core Duo - I used this to replace my Sky+ and I use it as a home theatre.
MacPro 2.66GHz - This is my current work horse and it flies. I have been doing a load of Matlab simulations and it is amazing how fast it is.

Wow, thats a lot of machine! When i get my work station cleaned up I will post the MacBook Pro and MacPro.

I was wondering how the MBP deals with being sat on the desk rather than elevated... but mainly... what is the deal with the mighty mouse on glass? I didn't think they worked....

It seems to be fine, there isnt really any heat issues, glass absorbs heat pretty well, and if it start to gets hot I just lift the lid...and as for the mouse...I have a lame Geek Squad mouse pad so it would take away from the sweetness, haha.

Why the new thread? Is there a comment limit or something?

Yeah I'm confused. Why kill one of the most popular threads in the forum? We had active conversations going on in there and now it's locked. WTH?

JPT
Nov 4, 2007, 08:08 PM
I've started splitting long threads (>1000-2000 posts) into "Part 2" threads. At the moment there's no hard/fast rule, but certainly perpetual threads will be split. Meanwhile, news threads that tend to have a self-imposed life span we'll let ride.

The reason is that threads this long may be contributing to database locks / stalls.

well there are two things going on here essentially...

im a bit of a Burton fan ;) i love it - also a big Danny Elfman fan.. love the style of composition in all the Burton films he's written scores for.. cant get enough.. anyways...
second thing:
i needed to somehow get the damn 20" ACD's panel in line with the iMacs panel and these two almightly books did the trick nicely.. :D

Cheers, I was so chuffed when I found it :) I found it among a pile of abandoned gear outside the uni's Biomolecular Sciences building; it weighs so much I had to wheel it back on an office chair I pulled out a skip! I also nabbed 3x Silicon Graphics O2 workstations, an old Dell P1 (serving as a speaker stand atm!) & an old Compaq Armada laptop (currently being converted into a digital photo frame). It's a gorgeous monitor, but isn't as bright as it should be - but hey, it was free!

does the fact that one is glossy and the other isn't bother you? I'm considering going either macbook+external display(which I already own) and ditching my powerbook, or keeping the powerbook for mobility and buying an iMac and spanning displays but I'm not sure how combining glossy and non-glossy will work.

If you're picky about that kind of detail, I would recommend the HP w2007, the w2207, or the w2408, depending if you're trying to match to a 20" or a 24" iMac. They are glossy, really nice-looking screens, and they match the look of the new iMac nearly perfectly (for better or for worse). You might want one higher-quality matte screen if you need perfect color reproduction for professional work (alas, the eternal matte vs. glossy debate), but if you just want the two screens to match, this is my recommendation:

What mouse is that?

I am looking for a quality bluetooth mouse with good battery life when I get my Macbook.

That looks like either a Logitech MX or VX Revolution. Good mice, but aren't Bluetooth as they require a USB RF dongle.

The best Bluetooth mouse I've ever used battery life-wise is the wireless Mighty Mouse. It went for something like 3 months before I had to change the battery.

Yeah it's the new 2.2 Ghz :) I ususally keep my desk clean so I can do my studies on my desk, but my college textbooks are on the shelf below. Ikea opens Nov 14 in Orlando, looking to get new desktop lamps that are so popular on here. Maybe, who knows. My first priority is to get 4gb RAM and maybe some invisible shield :o

I do envy the wireless MM though..

Except for the fact I don't see a door on the front, the size and logos (I think I can make out "DVD" and "dts" on the bottom) make it look like it could be some sort of external optical drive. Or maybe some sort of video decoder/input device?

It's an external DVD burner from Sony. Mac Compatible. I bought it for my iBook before I got my mini. I figured since it works so well, I can go with the lower mini and still have dvd dl capabilities. Use the price difference to up my memory to 2Gb.

Am I the only one here who gets sad/confused when they see someone who has spent 5-15k on their setup, screens, periphs, speakers, game consoles, games, etc, and then they can't even get a nice desk to put it in? Or they can't even paint the wall, or have other furniture or even a nice frame on the wall? How much is some drywall to cover up 1972 wood paneling, a hundred bucks? Come on.

That's a fundamentally flawed argument seeming as it's speed has got absolutely nothing to do with it being a Sony Vaio, but rather the era in which it was released; any other machine in the same price bracket at the time of purchase time would be pretty much identical in terms of speed.

My dad only paid like, $2500 or so for it. That's not bad. Of course you can find faster, but it's plenty fast for anything we need to do on it. Not sure I see your point... I wasn't comparing the speed to the fact that it's a VAIO.

Yes, that, on the floor, is a projector. On the table, the bottom is a upconverting DVD player, and yes, that's a SNES (props to anyone who recognize the game in the slot). Classic gaming goodness on a 10' screen, who can beat that?!

What's not there: my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and my 500 GB Iomega external HD, which is on the opposite side of the flat, inside a closet. Yup, internet access and AirDisk access is totally invisible :D

Don't even own a Jeep lol.

The chair is an Office Depot Lane Furniture deal $249 for $149 I got it on sale, be warned if you get one it's gonna stink your house up for 1-2 weeks, nasty factory smell that isn't washable, just have to wait till it goes way. I almost took it back before I read about it on some sites.

The Audio is as follows:
- Preamp: NAD C162
- Amplifier: NAD C272
- CD Player: NAD C542 HDCD
- Speakers: Klipsch Synergy F-3 (Soon B&W 805S w/ stands)
- Power Regulator: APC H-Type 1.5kVA H15BLK
- Rack: ATI AGR 405B Glass
- Interconnects: Custom by Blue Jeans Cable - Belden 1505F w/ Canare RCAP
- Speaker wire: Canare 4S11 Quad-Star Bi-Wire

Adding a Musical Fidelity X-Dac V3 external DAC for the iMac later on, $500 I don't really wanna spend right now. New speakers first

I love them and yeah they will be sold, but you gotta understand there is no comparing $960 towers to $2600 bookshelfs, the image and dynamics are on a whole different level, but for $960 even for under $1500 I think they are amazing. I bought the speakers before I did all the component upgrading, so now the bottleneck is the speakers. I ran them on a old Pioneer 100w amp when I first got them, and they sounded pretty dang good even then.

The hard part is gonna be trying to sell them.

What do you use to hold the Samsung monitor like that? I am currnetly thinking of investing in a setup (Almost exactly) much like what you have.

I use the Neo- Flex by Ergotron (http://www.ergotron.com/Products/DeskMounts/tabid/71/mid/396/ctl/Product/PRDID/9/Language/en-US/Default.aspx). It works really well. They have other really kool arms and podiums for laptops. They even have podium and lcd arm combos. :D

It's a Sharp Aquos 32". I bought it at Ultimate Electronics for $902 after tax. I love it, but I came from a $125 Tube so it's a pretty big step up. It has a VGA input so it works really nice for my MB's monitor.

I'm selling it because I don't really have any time to use it. My life is too hectic for video games right now.

My mini-DVI to DVI adapter fits through my iMac hole...I just had to make sure it was one of the first things in there, then I routed all the other cables (power, 3x USB, 1x FW400, 1x audio, 1x network) around it.

I've seen a lot of setups recently here ever since the new iMacs came out, but one that I have yet to see is that new iMac with a set of Logitech Z-10 speakers.

I didn't want to make a new thread just for this, so I'd like to request some pics of a setup like this, here, if anyone has both pieces of hardware :)

And can anyone (who own a set) comment on the quality of the Z10 speakers?
I currently have a set of FX6021, and I realize it's unfair for the Z10 with no sub to be compared to the FX6021 (which are awesome!), but i sure like the simplicity of the Z10 (not to mention that i don't need the extra wires running all over the place and space taken up by a subwoofer, too).

Any help appreciated, thanks!

If you're picky about that kind of detail, I would recommend the HP w2007, the w2207, or the w2408, depending if you're trying to match to a 20" or a 24" iMac.

WARNING:
At least w2408h has color adjustments only through windows application.
"Color..."-menu in display's OSD is grayed out...

It's a Model M 84-key spacesaver. It was assembled August 28, 2007 and, to the best of my knowledge, was the last one ever produced (http://geekhack.org/viewtopic.php?t=71).

I've been trying to hunt that thing down here in the UK since August, or more or less when I first asked about yours way back then.

I still can't find anybody with them here, they either once had them, sold our or discontinued. :/

I even tried to get the Corepad XXL set, once again, none in stock or discontinued. :/

I don't understand why they are so hard to come by here, either not much demand for them to stock any or only so many have been made.

there is actually a script written by someone to get the PC functionality into OS X:
http://macapper.com/2007/03/26/logitech-z-10-touch-your-music-a-little-early/

meanwhile, would still love to see someone with the new iMacs with a z-10 setup :)

That's cool. I figured there'd be some kind of hack to get it to work. As for me, the speakers, though awesome, are way too big for my desk. I'm just using my iMacs internal speakers right now until I find a suitable set of good-sounding speakers with a small footprint.

Pah, it ain't a real Model M unless it was made in Greenock! I tried using a buckling spring board last year (NTC with alps sliders), but I found it too fatiguing compared to rubber membraine or scissor springs.

haven't posted since last April, slow and ugly, but functional.

first 4 pics are my home office, the widescreen LCD on the left is powered by a dual 1.3 GHz Sawtooth. The LCD the far right is powered by a 350 MHz B&W and is used only for watching movies. If you look closely, you'll see a 3400c below the stack of papers under the G3's monitor. Not pictured are my PB 1.67 on the living room coffee table, my 500 and 700 MHz iBooks, and my 500 MHz TiBook.

All the G4's are running Leopard.

BTW, the TV is a 1985 Sony. Between the TV and the G3's LCD is a "docking station" where my PB sits to share internet with the G3 when needed and to back up with Time Machine to one of the externals.

the last picture is my setup at work. A dual 867 MDD.

Here's what I've got set up so far (it's in the far right corner of my home office).

[15.4" MBP, iPhone, 30" HP LCD, Model M "mini", Logitech Trackman Marble Wheel]

That setup is sick! Love the screen! HP is definitely doing a good job with the design of the LCD's.

I got a Ripper XXL delivered to the UK by PCXmods.com. Even though their site doesn't allow you to order for international delivery, I sent them an email through their contact form. The man got back to me very quickly, and apologized that none of their EU suppliers stocks the item, but said that he could handle the order personally—I emailed him my postal address, and he sent me a Paypal invoice. The whole thing was very smooth!

Ironic that, thats who I've contacted and he said the same thing. Apparently its supply and demand thats making these things so hard to come by.

He did say the postage was relatively high. "$34.20 USD which is about 16.40 British Pounds"

It much easier on the time I need to maintain the machines with just one to worry about.

HP LJ4 Plus (bought it off a guy for EIGHT DOLLARS, six years ago and it has been rock solid...WITH jetdirect card, BTW). Thinkpad X60s running the latest Ubuntu distro (7.10). Sun Ultra 5 runs headless (although I have a suitable monitor and keyboard/mouse to run as a workstation when I feel like it). That keyboard is the HHKB Pro (blank keytop version). And, of course, the greatest pointing device ever made, the Logitech Trackman Marble. :)

You sir, win many foodstamps.

My LJ4 M Plus was £11.34 with JetDirect & a toner that lasted over 1000 pages. Bloody incredible machines.

I have recently started using a Kensington Expert trackball, upgraded from a Microsoft Trackball Explorer & am truly loving it. I have to say that I actually prefer the centrally-mounted ball over the side-mounted ball of the Microsoft & the Trackman. I just love the way I can use multiple fingers when I want to, instead of just a thumb - I often find myself with a thumb & 3 or even all 4 fingers on the ball at the same time when I'm doing something precise in InDesign & never have less than 2 fingers at any time. Still, all these people still using mice for desktop/web activities

I can understand simplifying (heaven knows I want to from my current 5 machine setup!) but why ditch the Dell monitor? It's a damned sight better than the MBP's panel, so why not keep it on the desk & 'dock' (as it were, seeming as no Mac laptops actually have docks) the MBP? If not, you can always post it to me :) (I seem to remember you being UK from Hexus!)(& [H]ardforum as well!).

It was just to big and I was trying to limit the cables I have to plug in to just power and one usb port.

I thought I would miss the big screen, but I haven't one bit. It's in it's box behind me in the office still, but it will going soon when I find the time.

I'm on lots and lots of forums, but yes you'd have seen me on hexus and hardforums :D
