My friends ibook is having a strange problem. Files and folders are disappearing off of it. Today everything in itunes got deleted, and some documents. Is the hard drive failing?

Did he change his folder name?? Ask him if he changed his Finder name. It should be like this.
If his name is John Smith...it should appear as johnsmith. If he changed it, it may be the reason. I would run Apple Hardware tests off of the OS CD's which your friend should have.
