ThinkSecret reports (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/ipodappleexpo.html) that Apple is planning on introducing a special edition 40GB iPod at Apple Expo Paris as well as hints that the rumored iPod peripherals (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/08/20030824044627.shtml) could also be released.
Few details are available on either product.

I read about this, its name is going to be the "Bling Bling" iPod, and its casing will be platinum and diamonds.
50 cent and snoop dogg already have one. That's going to be the main selling point.

Will rumored special edition 40GB iPod include COLOR screen
capable of displaying images in
iPhoto and QuickTime?
Imagine watching a downloaded DVD on your iPod instead of the airline's inflight movie selection.
How about BlueTooth for wireless downloads? ;)
Breast pocket size subwoofer peripheral is out because of potential danger to those with pacemakers.:(

they're already pretty "special" - what could they do that would make it stand apart, without making it overly mass-produced?

What would be cool, are iPod faceplates... The idea seems kinda cheesy at first, but look at what it's done for cell phones... It'll help people personalize them, and help Apple sell more...
Now, a special edition 40gb iPod... I'd be torn between selling my old iPod and buying a new one, and buying a new wireless keyboard and mouse for my PowerBook...
If the iPod has some sort of bluetooth connectivity, or is able to record, that would be really cool... We'll just have to wait.

Special Edition iPod could really mean anything, I think. I suppose we shall see.
Twice I've been only pixels away from buying an iPod, but I have had some cash issues the last month or two. I have a birthday coming up in another month and a half though :-) maybe somebody will surprise me.
I think I'd prefer the simple regular iPod, if BlingBling is the special :-) I always thought the BlingBling style was pretty tacky.

I hear that these special edition iPods will come complete with a free dual G5. Apparently they've been stockpiling the G5's ready for this promotion and that's why no one has received theirs yet!
Sorry, but I'm going nuts now! If I don't hear something about dual G5's from Apple tomorrow or VERY soon afterwards I think I'm gonna... well... something!

I really hope it's a new remote.
The best remote I've ever seen is the one that comes with the iRiver CD/MP3 players. It's nice to be able to view the song title information on the remote allowing for the iPod to be kept safe and snug.

Three words ... voice recongition navigation.
I promise, I won't post this again (already wrote about it in the original message about iPod peripherals), but if anyone from Apple reads this, then maybe it'll spark an idea.

As for the recording...
The current (gen 3) ipods CAN record about 10 second of audio. With pretty good quality too.
You talk into I think the left earbud in the diagnostic mode and you can record your voice! Search xlr8yourmac.com for it. I tried it after I deard about it in may and it worked... and was a sweet feature.
So the capability has been there for MONTHS

It'll be like the 25th Anniversary Mac over-priced under-developed technology like:
fully 3D color holographic display
it has suction cups so that if you attach it to a window the window vibrates and acts as a speaker
built-in cameras and mini-projector so that in the Dock it projects a keyboard that you "type" on for enhanced data entry
automatic syncing w/ the iSight and satelite internet so that you can video chat on the go
and it'll cost only 27,999.95!

There was a thread around a year ago (that I can't find) that discussed a signature series of iPods by artists like Madonna. There were a series of pictures of the signatures that people had sleuthed off of the apple website. Did anything ever become of that? Could be special edition stuff.

The new "Special Edition" iPod will incorporate "Clapper" technology.
1 clap = play
2 claps = pause
-also combinations can be used:
clap - snap - clap - clap - finger tap - snap - snap = "Play all songs by Radiohead in random order that were uploaded to this iPod on or before January 13th 2003 at 2:00pm"
Cool huh?

I'm thinking that this Special Edition iPod will just be an all aluminum casing to match the G5s. I can't see Apple adding all these new features to the iPod when revisions had already came in April and last week, this might cause tension with the iPod owners who purchased them at those times. But I figure, if ThinkSecret reported it, then its got to be true. I'll probably now just try to hang on at least one more day, before I end up buying a 40GB to replace my ol' 10GB. So I guess I'll be staying up late tonight to see whats really coming out.

I am still waiting (waiting waiting waiting) for a USB-Firewire cable and the support to hook up your digital camera to the iPod and dump all your shots off the camera to the iPod so you can empty your camera's memory card and keep shooting pictures!! I cannot believe they haven't done this yet. It would make my (and many others) life so much more flexible and powerful. Digital Hub, baby. This is the way to make my devices more powerful and useful.

Inside sources have told me that there indeed is a special edition ipod all set to be revealed. It is going to be an enormous boom box ipod. It is going to be marketed as the "Electric Boogapod". It will come preloaded with fabulous oldies but goodies, from such artists as:Whodini. The Fat Boys, and Kool Mo Dee. Every "Electric Boogapod" will come with a six-pack of spray paint, and a 5 by 5 piece of cardboard for all your def breakdance needs.

You obviously don't realize how slow BlueTooth is. 1 Mbps. That means a 5 MB file would take 40 seconds to download. 40 seconds for 1 song.

They seriously need to offer an external compact flash connector for downloading photos via firewire to the iPod. This would instantly make the iPod twice as useful and worth the big bucks they want. I can't justify the price for carrying around my music alone - but 40GB of photo space the size of a deck of cards? Oh hell yeah.

On a serious note, though, if a special edition came out with a wireless (bluetooth?) remote, I would seriously consider getting one and selling my 20 gig. I do prefer the pre-3G controls, but I would probably do this.

How about wireless downloads from the iTMS. So whenever you have a connection, you can browse the iTMS and download a song of your liking. 40 seconds isn't very long in that case.

Hell yeah, Bluetooth in an iPod would be great. NOT for transfering MP3s or anything like that, but for wireless headphones, syncing contacts/calendar with a Bluetooth enabled computer, PDA, or cell phone, and best of all, a Bluetooth remote (with a small display).
See my posts in the iPod peripheral thread about the Bluetooth watch :)

I have it on very reliable sources (i.e., my aunt's best friend's next door neighbor's mailman's mistress's step-son) that the special announcement tomorrow will be a dual processor XPod--that's right, a fully configured music file server so you can connect it to the Internet and allow all the downloading of music files that you want. The slogan: "10,000,000 songs on your web site."
I understand the RIAA was unhappy about this move until they entered the perimeter of Steve's Reality Distortion Field and then they sat back and smiled and hugged each other and understood that all was good and right with the Universe.
Yeah, right... :D

Man, with ThinkSecret's excellent track record I thought for certain it was gonna happen. But from ThinkSecret is sounds like they have assurance that the LE iPods are out there but are stunned why Apple didn't release them. The only other time I think Apple would release such a product in the near future would have to be MWSF04. I was about to buy a new 40GB last week but when I read the article I figured I could wait just another day longer, but now I don't know whether to wait some more or just give in an buy one now. On the supposed iPod accessories and software update, it seems like there is a good chance that this will appear in the next weeks. But the most likely situation is that Jobs might do a press conference similar to the one in April, in mid-October to announce the iTMS for Windows, and possibly even through out there the availabilty of new accessories and a software update at time as well. Anyways, just my thoughts.

Would agree that either in November or October that the special edition is released, marking the release of the iTunes Music Store for Windows or the anniversary of the iPod. Special Editions need a Special Reason after all.
... just thinking about the improvements made within the last year on the iPod. I bought mine this time last year, a 20 GB. What a difference a year makes. By this time next year will we see the 60 or 80 GB iPod? What kind of software improvements will be made? I'd love to see the ability to dump your digital photos onto the iPod - VERY convienant for photographers. And the ability to delete tracks - in case you come across a bad track (or at the very least, marking tracks to be deleted once synced to the computer). In fact, this "marking songs" idea could be taken forward quite a bit. Will the iPod add peripherals due to customer demand/a new idea like cell phones did by adding camera features? How will Apple continue it's niche market place with a product that sells so successfully, especially now that Pee-Cee users can purchase one? And how much longer before I have to read about when the next PowerBook is coming out?!?!? Good Grief!! All that time and anticipation for a few added features and speed bump.... JEEZ. ;)

When you're in the Now Playing screen just push the center button a few times and set the rating to 1 star, then when you sync just sort your MP3s by Rating and delete the ones with 1 star.
