Chali, can you please tell us the framerates you're getting? And what settings (low, med, high)?
The only reason I ask is because 30FPS is good to some people, while for others (like me) it's pretty laggy.
I'll only get it if average FPS is 40 (even though acceptable framerates for COD4 is 50+).
I get 60 Hz at high settings

this is nonsense. I can clearly see the difference between 30 and 60 FPS, so saying that human eye can't tell the difference is just wrong. 60 vs 120 FPS is a bit more tricky, but still possible. Am I not human?

30fps for some games is considered "unplayable" meaning that you won't really be able to enjoy it much. Games like World in Conflict play nice at 30fps and won't hinder gameplay much. But a game like CoD4? Especially when you're playing online, 30fps is way too low. Even for Counter Strike Source you'll be able to tell the difference between 50fps and 30fps. Like I said, it varies between games. For some games you will definitely be able to tell the difference because you'll notice stutters in the animations.
If there's a way you can do it (maybe mess around with the settings), play CoD4 at 30fps. Then change the settings so you can get above 60fps. You'll be able to see the difference. If you can't, then you must be on crack.

well, if it was easy enough to change settings to get from 30 to 60, why would anyone play @30fps? and...I'm used to playing with anywhere from 7-16fps on this old 1.25 emac, so 30 would be gravy for me =)
I am waiting for my delivery for the 20" Alum with the HD2600 Pro, so I'm kinda excited to see the difference...

Godspeed did some tests on his iMac:
Imac 3.06 8800 4gb ram
COD4 in Windows - 35-60 fps (depending on the level, grass hurts the fps)
COD4 OS X - 30-60 fps
The 30-60 thing... once you are used to 60 and you have to play with < 30
it always feels like something is not running well.

I and my wife both have iMacs (24" & 20", 2.4GHz, 4GB, 500 GB disk).
My 24" plays on the internet easily and in single player I can run CoD4 at 1900x1200 and it flies. On the net at 1200x1024 I get fps's from 25-70 depending on the smoke, number of people, and the country the server originates.
However, I cannot get the 2 macs connected on my lan so that the wife and I can play against each other. I have tried just about everything. The server starts fine on my machine, but I cannot see my server from her machine. She can connect to all the internet servers with no problem.
Does anyone have a clue to what might be wrong? Is it a security setting that is not proper, or permission problems, or the iMac firewall?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Actually the weapons are static to your profile. As you level you will unlock other weapons, both opfor and SAS/Marines.

True. 30fps is an average usually, so there are times when it peaks at 45fps, and there are times when it dips into the high teens.
That's why most gamers shoot for 60fps average, so that when it dips into the 40's, it is still above that 30fps threshold that the eye can see.

I see the difference. Doesn't take super-eyes to do that. The smoother movement in 60 FPS vs 30 FPS is clearly seen.
If you stare at a scene with zero or very little action, telling 30 and 60 apart is harder, yes.
But load up some FPS game and move the camera around - you will see the difference.

The difference in performance between OSX and Windows is pretty significant. I've got the Mac version and am playing it on my 1920x1200 external in native res. I play the demo under Windows bootcamp with the same settings and it feels almost twice as fast. That's not to say they didn't do a good port with the Mac version, because they did, but I'm starting to feel that any of these shooters or newer games that have higher than moderate requirements should probably be played under Windows.
I don't suppose anyone wants to trade a Mac version of NWN2 or something else for my COD4? :) Ah well, it's back in the box at the moment and I've been enjoying the new Prince of Persia under bootcamp.

Based on your newbie-ness and the similarity of your username to the company you were talking about - this might be seen as spamming? If so, you are in the wrong place - this is a Mac forum, and you're posting to the Apple games part of the forum, where we are talking about CoD4 for Mac. There's no CoD4 for Wii, and we can't use the Dark Ops gun for Wii with the Mac anyways.

Any ideas? I don't want him to use my Admin account and go around messing the system up.

Got this game recently and it is virtually unplayable on my year old Mac Pro with the X1900 video card. This is really disappointing as the X1900 is supposedly supported by COD4 and my machine exceeds minimum requirements by quite a bit.
I guess instead of buying a mac pro and expecting to get professional quality graphics (after paying for a graphic card upgrade) I should have saved a thousand dollars and got a friggin imac.
I have noticed that if i run dual monitors (like usual) the adc adapter thing seems to kill performance quite a bit. Probably time to get rid of the old studio display i guess...
Anybody else have experience with COD4 and the x1900 vid card?

I agree that does not sound right at all. I had a P4 single core w/ a x1950pro and had no issues running single player with most settings maxed (no AA of course). Are both your monitors ADC? Are you using one of those apple DVI to ADC adapters? Try it with one monitor alone (preferably a non ADC monitor if you have one), unhook the other one.

Picked COD4 on Saturday at Fry's. I get the same "not authorized" error. You should definitely go to Aspyr's support website and open a trouble ticket. The louder the complaints, the faster they'll take the issue seriously.
IMO Aspyr has terrible QC if they actually shipped a product that won't install and work on a stock Mac configs. (It's not like the PC world where they have a million different configs to test.)
I suspect the problem is related to the DRM/copy protection, but we'll have to wait for the official word.
In the meantime, has anybody gotten this game to work?

Reading back through this thread, it's understandable if this was back in September when a few other people on here were having issues, but SERIOUSLY, the games been out for how long now?
We should be credited 3 free downloads of any games we want for this crap.
EDIT:
I just sent aspyr a ticket claiming:
"
What the hell, Aspyr. I"ve heard of some people having this issue after installing the game on an intel mac, but that was MONTHS ago. I just bought a brand new copy of COD4 and its giving me this error. How do you even release a game without checking that it works on the platform you release it for? It doesnt take a degree to do so. I'm pretty unhappy, and know others are. I would like free shipping and a replacement disk that works."

Is that the Mac version? And what frame rate are you getting on average in multiplayer? Press ` and type in /cg_drawFPS 1 to find out :) I wasn't going to buy the Mac version because of all the bad things people say about it, but if in multiplayer you get at least 60 FPS all the time, except when there is a lot of smoke etc, it might be worth getting.

Oh it's the Mac version and certainly near or above 60 fps most of the time (depends if your in a full 60 player game or with only 16). The i7 run this game like butter.
I'm currently playing maxed out in 1080p and 4x antialias without any glitch, and I use to be quite a hardcore gamer, I know it's not below 30-40 fps. I'll try your command and get back to you. Oh and that's in a 28 player games. Basically, the fps drop near 30 in the direction of the heavy fire, else it's a perfect constant 60.
(currently stuck on a loading screen, the modded map takes over 300 megs of data...)
Tested: 1920x1080 all settings maxed out 4x anti-alias, constant 60fps (cap), when in heavy fire with copter it can drop to 30fps for a fraction of a second as you fire. The i7 loads maps in a few seconds.

Sorry, I had Vsync on, this is why my framerate was only alternating between 60 and 30.
It average around 70-90fps and drops between 40-60 (on crossfire) only in the most dense battle with lots of player, that is in 2560x1440 max settings, no antialias. In all honesty, it's quite breathtaking
Let me try it with 4x antialias in 1440p
Edit, haha I can't believe this, but it wont drop under 30. 1440p with 4x antialias, all maxed out on crossfire, average 38-50 fps, in the 30s when the aiming blur comes in. Looks amazing btw.

yeah it's really fast, I made an error however, while the effects were on max, the textures were on normal, not "extra". calculate a slight drop in fps if you use extra and anti-aliasing. There is a compromize to make somewhere, but it still looks amazing.
Edit: with the normal maps and specular on normal, textures on high, I get 50-90 fps in 1440p all maxed out. (and still a drop to the 30s when aiming because of the deep of field - which curiously does not change the framerate in 1080p)

It's hard to see the difference, I just prefer with antialias. You can easily get the same framerate in 1440p without the antialias and dropping a setting somewhere. I just that one also because the fps do not change with the field depth (it somehow drops a bit in 1440p).
BTW this screen is really something special. Using inferior resolution does not create the strange blur all previous LCD I possessed had before. Amazing screen.

I'd probably turn depth of field off then. Your eyes make everything blurry except what you look at anyway.

You gain a good 15fps in 1440p that way. The textures on "extra" in that resolution are really nice and worth reducing an effect or so.
Anyway, moral of the story is, the i7 is a beast: you may want to install windows and get MW2 instead. I'm starting to think about it.

But MW2 has no recoil, no bullet spread, too many kill streaks which makes the whole game about killstreaks and no custom maps or dedicated servers.
I can buy the Mac version brand new for about the price of the PC version over here in Australia, and the Mac serial key works in Windows, so if I don't like the Mac performance, I can just borrow my friends Windows discs and play it that way.

I most agree specially with the too many killstreaks. Can't it be disable on pc?
I have it on ps3 anyway, it just I wanted to see how the iMac would run games, and apparently, it does so quite well. 2560x1440 is a bit of an overkill however if you want everything maxed out.

No, you can't disable anything, because there are no dedicated servers. It is basically the exact same as the PS3 version.

Here, I managed to take a screenshot for you of what it looks like.
This is 1440p with 4x antialias, no depth of field, the rest on max, totally playable (40-60 fps).
Click on it and use the zoom tool to see full size:

Looks good, I so need money for the i7 :(. I'll buy the game soonish, after I get BC2. Why do I keep having to look at stuff about the i7 iMac, my 20" looks so outdated compared.
EDIT: Does your FPS drop heaps when you zoom in with a sniper? In COD2 I lose about half my frames when I zoom in, it sucks.

lets see...oddly enough, I have an HP notebook, with 4 gigs , 2.0 ghz, ATI 3200HD running win7, and an older c2d polycarbonate iMac, 17inch, 2.0 ghz, 1 gig ,ATI X-1600, running SL, the HP lags a lot even during single player, but the ol' iMac runs very well on both SP and MP...By the way, its a great game, the mac port is just as fun (even better) than the PC version...

lol wut
There a couple servers that are not disabled, but if you kill people with lets say noob tube or Marty, you'll be kicked from the server.
All multiplayer server listed are pretty much dedicated. :)
