Anyone tried this on a low-spec Alu iMac (2.0 with 2400XT GPU and 3GB RAM)? If so, how does it play? I saw the trailer for the first time this evening and it looks a bit good :)

I've been playing it since it was released via Boot Camp/ Windows XP. Beautiful game, multiplayer is a blast. It runs VERY fast on my Mac Pro/x1900. 1344x1024 on my 30" ACD with everything turned on and 4x antialiasing still never chokes - I even increased MaxFPS to 90 and I've never seen it lag, even on 32-person servers in the thick of the action.
I didn't try COD 4 on Parallels, but other games that need Direct X won't run for crap that way.

Unless you are running this at low textures, lighting and effects - then this is totally impossible. An x1900 BARELY plays this game at 1280x1024 with any type of AA on. I have a 1900xtx with a dual core 2.7ghz processor, 2GB RAM in XP and it will hover in the low 30's at 1280 maxed out. The 1900xtx is the faster version of your card, and quad core on your MacPro is certainly not going to make up the difference. And your MacPro or any other Mac is not some magical device. Call of Duty 4 taxes even the latest GPUs.

Sorry, no offense meant but you don't know what you're talking about. 90 FPS - no lag. Several hours just today. Textures, lighting, shadows all set at normal (options are either "low" or "normal"). Screen resolution 1280x1024. 4x anti-aliasing. I was mistaken about screen resolution - 1344x1024 is what I have set for CoD 2 on the Mac partition. The X1900 is driving two 30" ACD's although the other one only shows the reduced resolution window of the Window background whle the game is loaded.
I've been playing online FPS since Quake I. I'm sensitive to the video, was apprehensive about FPS on this monitor and machine. CoD 4, CoD 2 (Mac version), Quake IV, QW:ET demo, BF 2142....all of 'em just rip along no problem. Oh, and Quake III too, my all-time favorite.
YOU may think it's impossible, but I'm actually doing it. Post back when you load up your new 3 ghz 4-core Mac Pro...tell me if I'm right or wrong.

I know exactly what I'm talking about, your MacPro system isn't some magical source of power. The game is HEAVILY GPU dependent and that x1900 is old news. You post up with your configuration screen and the FRAPS screenshot to prove it. Dual core vs Quad core is not going to make ANY difference. Current benchmarks at 1280x1024 @ 4AA and 16xAF have the 8800GTX MAXING at 68FPS. I've been playing computer games WELL before Quake 1 and have owned just about everything related in between. Post proof, because there is NO WAY you are running this game at 90FPS without having AA and every effect turned off.
If you're so sensitive to video, you'd have noticed that running a game at a resolution other than the native of an LCD panel. Causes the image to scaled up something ugly.
Next you'll be telling us you are running Crysis maxed out @ 60FPS on that x1900.

The Quad Core is indeed no magical device. However, Macs are way better in performance from PC's with the same configuration. My iMac X1600 runs games a lot faster than PC's with the same specs.
I haven't played COD 4, but I believe him. And he didn't say that he is running the game at 90 FPS. He said that he increased the MaxFPS variable to that, meaning that the maximum FPS he will be getting will be 90. But that doesn't mean that the game will reach that score. He may be playing the game at 40 fps, and with an LCD panel, that will have no major difference to playing at 60 or at 70 fps. Since both of you are so sensitive about video, that's Video performance's "1,2,3" steps.
I wouldn't be so serious about what I'm saying about a game's performance on a Mac (like you) if I hadn't played it. Intel Macs show a very high performance boost in games compared to old IBM processors. Even if they are running windows. And many times prove faster than PC's with the same specs. I have played many games, like C&C 3, Half Life 2, Need For Speed Carbon, and others, that prove my point.
However, I would love to see some proof with FRAPS. ;)

However, I would love to see some proof with FRAPS. ;)Yeh, default MaxFPS was 85, I just bumped it to 90 because I was in the MP .cfg file anyway (changing the default timeout for acquiring a server - they're having a problem with that). IW says that 60 FPS is the holy grail for that game. I've recorded a few demos, but I haven't run /timedemo on them and I haven't seen a standard downloadable timedemo anywhere on the web yet. I don't have FRAPS on that machine, but I'll download it and run it for you when I get a chance. At the least, I'll see if CoD 4 will accept cg_drawFPS . I would think it would.
What I do know, as does Overcast, surely (since he's played it on a Mac Pro ;)), is that CoD 4 has at least a couple of very detailed but ridiculously small maps ("Shipment" and "Wet Work") that turn out to be nonstop grenade-fests (frag and flash-bang) and are really pretty absurd with 20+ players on them. With 4x anti-aliasing on and all textures and lighting set at Normal, I fully expected that action to bring that Mac to its knees at 1280x1024. It certainly doesn't, it doesn't visibly slow down a bit, and I was pleasantly surprised given the really exceptional detail and texturing inherent to that game.

FRAPS shows an average frame rate of about 75 FPS. Average minimum was about 45, avaerage maximum was about 85. ver 4 different maps.
4x antialiasing on, textures and lighting all set at normal (normal or low are the choices), 1280x1024.

What are your graphics set to on COD4? I've experimented with a bunch of resolution configs on my 24" iMac, and I was curious if you have anything different.
I set the resolution to 1,280 X 800 with the settings on Medium to High...and I recall getting around 35-45 fps in the demo most of the time. I was kinda hoping I could get even better performance though. I am still debating whether to get the Windows version or the 360 version.

my graphics setting are optimal performance set by the game except I turned up the res to 1680/1050 because thats what the 20 inch imac max is. I mucked around a bit had some trouble during single player level set in the night when some chopper spot light went all blocky I liked the effect but it was not right. I think that was a glow setting but im still trying a few things.Any tips appreciated.

I didn't really turn up my graphics on my MBP - that is probably where your issue is on (I found that AA takes a bit of a kickin too).
BTW: I gotta say that this is the best game I have ever played. I have played through single player about 5 times and now I have jumped into the multiplayer arena....I have never had this much fun in a game (but maybe that is just me).

It comes with both single and multiplayer versions. Everybody has a different view, but I personally only played enough of the single player mode against the bots to get familiar enough with the action to be able to go up against multiplayer online. No way can a set of bots match the skill and ruthlessness of online humans. I was doing well enough at single player hardcore, but the learning curve for the multiplayer against real opponents was steep.

So I'm learning a lot on this thread about Boot Camp and COD4. So after I buy XP or Vista this weekend(200bucks ouch) and use boot camp, HOW MUCH SPACE SHOULD I DEDICATE TO THE XP PARTITION?? i think it defaults to like 5gb. is that enough? I'm using the 24" dual core, 2.8ghz, 2gb iMac. Bear in mind that I am a total caveman when it comes to this kind of stuff, but I am a gamer who wants to play on the mac, something I've only done with Warcraft. I just want someone to tell me how to do it right before I toast my sexy Apple.

You should be able to get Vista or XP for about half of that. I just bought yet another copy of XP Professional for $129 from NewEgg. XP Home Edition is $90.
When you start up Boot Camp, one of the first things it will do is ask you how big you want your Windows partition to be. If you set a partition larger than 32 gigabytes, you'll have to format the partition in NTFS when the Windows install screen comes up - otherwise you can use FAT32. XP will take up something like 6 gigabytes on the disk - if you're going to be installing some of the more modern FPS games, I think you'll want substantially more than a 5 gig partition.
You won't toast anything. If you partition and it turns out to be unworkable, you can easily go back and remove the partition. Of course, that does mean you'd have to re-install Windows, and installation of Windows always does tend to be rather lengthy and mildly painful, but other than time consumption, it's not a problem.
I don't know what to tell you about appropriate partition size. I have two terabytes of internal storage on my Mac Pro so I didn't give it much thought. I would think you'd want a partition that will easily accomodate your Windows install plus the size of your games plus a generous overhead for future additions and I'd recommend 32 gig (default button on Boot Camp) and FAT32 since you won't have to spend the extra time reformatting the partition to NTFS.

Thanks HMAC. But which OS should I buy, XP or Vista? My gut says Vista only because it's the newer. But how's Vista Compare with XP so far on this forum?Personally, I remain skeptical of Vista because of reported stability problems and driver issues, so I went with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2C as is sold as OEM by NewEgg. OEM version is cheaper and the only difference is that it doesn't come with all the documentation and packaging, which I don't need anyway and the documentation is all online anyway. Vista may well be just fine in this application, I don't know, but I've read about enough problems with it that I decided to go with the more mature product. I haven't had problems with XP on either my MacBook Pro via Parallels or my Mac Pro via Boot Camp. I used XP Professional because of some of its enhanced networking protocols that I need for our network at work, but for home use, XP or Vista Home version should be just fine
Note that COD 4 is a pretty graphics-intensive application. It runs great on my Mac Pro, but how it runs on other Macs will vary depending on the graphics card, RAM, and processor type/number of cores. In order to maintain good frame rates on other computers, some adjustment of resolution, textures, lighting and anti-aliasing may be necessary.
I would think that for home application, Windows XP Home edition should be just fine. Make sure it has Service Pack 2 on the install disk - it won't work to use an older version of XP that requires updating with SP 2. The one you're talking about XP SP2B should be just fine. Follow the directions on the Boot Camp screens and you shouldn't have much, if any, problem. I say that having installed many versions of XP on computer's I've built over the years, but that install process, which is independant of Boot Camp, can be a little arcane. It's all text-based, no mouse, but pretty straightforward. You'll double click on Boot Camp from the utilities menu in OSX and it will ask you some straightforward questions, then tell you to insert the Windows install disk and restart. I'm inclined to say that you should use FAT32 on a partition less than 32 gig. After you install, you'll need to activate Windows, and that is pretty straightforward and should require nothing more than clicking Activate. You will have already entered the certificate code numbers that are on the Authenticity sticker on the Windows package. Then, you'll need to go to Windows Update (windowsupdate.com) and download all of the various security patches etc and you should be good to go. After that's done and you've restarted, you can install COD 4 (or whatever) as you normally would. Be aware that COD 4 is currently on patch 1.3, so you'll need to go to Infinity Ward website and download patch 1.3 and install that too.

Thank you very much for all your help. I wasnt sure what OEM meant. It looks like this version is the one I should go with, since all I'm doing is gaming in Windows. I'm guessing you'll have to tinker to get accepetable frame rates.

No, no. All of the DirectX FPS games like COD 1-2-3-4 run like crap on Windows via Parallels no matter what Mac computer one uses. OTOH, they work as well or better than the equivalent PC with the same video card when running them on Windows via Boot Camp.

I've heard that there can be microphone issues, it's likely a driver that may be unique to your headset. One some PC's, they need to be restarted with the microphone plugged in and activated.
On the rare occasions I've elected to use voice, I've always used Teamspeak or Ventrilo. The latter seems to be more prevalent in COD servers.

For a rough idea on how your machine might play COD4 you might want to take a look at gamespots hardware performance guide. They also mention the game runs better in XP than Vista, at this time. My impression is that people with the latest macbook pros and imacs sporting a radeon 2600 should run it decently. But every one's ideas of decent is different so you be the judge, here's the link...

I can run the demo on my aging P4 at 1024x768 with a fair amount of eyecandy.
I would also run this game in bootcamp not parallels. Parallels only supports 1 core as I can remember and I think the VM is equivalent to a Pentium. Just my 2 cents...

Gee, that's a tough call. You've got the cpu and ram to run it but your graphics card is towards the low end for this game. If you already have bootcamp setup, you should download the demo and give it a try. If you can post your impressions, it would help many people decide if their system is capable enough to run this game.

Hmac, what sort of mic are you using and what/where is it plugged into?I use a Logitech notebook headset (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/internet_headsets_phones/devices/223&cl=us,en). It tends to work more reliably in the microphone jack in the back, but I usually plug it into the front USB because it's closer to the headphone jack and easier to get to. USB microphone works fine in Leopard, but can be pretty twitchy in Windows XP.
http://www.logitech.com/repository/254/jpg/1668.1.0.jpg
The COD4 demo is a good place to start, but the demo doesn't use some of the more advanced texturing and lighting found in some of the other maps. I think the demo provides a sort of minimum, but slower graphics cards might still choke on some of the other maps like Pipeline or Overgrown. Supposedly, the game was designed to run well at 65 FPS. I have things turned up pretty high, all graphics at max and 4x AA, but on some maps, in some situations, I'll see fps rates drop down into the 40. It's rare, and it doesn't detract IMHO

BTW, I found the Demo tries to auto set the graphics based on your hardware and for me it kept wanting to set the game at 640x480. I can run the game with most settings up at 1024x768, so I think auto function is a little off. Definitely play with the settings to see what works best for you.:)

The Call of Duty 4 demo should be available here (http://www.callofduty.com/). Note that it's PC only - it will only run on Windows Vista or Windows XP, so you'd have to be running either of those two OS's with Boot Camp.

I've been following this thread pretty closely...
Having just switched from a PC to iMac (leopard, etc..) am about to try and install bootcamp to run my copy of COD2 and purchase COD4. Mea Culpa if this is hijacking, not my intent, but are there "clans" / "player groups" for COD2+Cod4 on the Mac??? I've had a helluva time finding info, as everything seems scattered far and wide. I'm trying to find out if there's enough of a community playing these games to develop a Mac Centric area on our Forums for support for Mac users playing COD2 and COD4. A recent poll suggested that I'm one of very few users on our forums using a Mac. Can anyone help point me in the direction I'm looking, or should I just start amassing info and build a forum within my existing players group?
Forgive me if this is hijacking, just drop me a PM and I'll delete.
Regards and thanks in Advance,

Everybody's different. The boot times to go from Windows to OSX and vice versa aren't a big deal to me and other than paying the $110 for Windows XP, the installation wasn't a big hassle. COD4 is a great game and it runs great on a Mac running Windows.
There may be Mac-centric clans or servers amongst the 9000+ COD4 servers out there, but there's no point IMHO, since it's actually running Windows and works just like everybody else's machines. No doubt IW will release COD4 on the Mac someday, but that concept is problematic. I run COD2 OSX version on my Mac. That's also a great game (COD4 is better IMHO) but upgrade patches for COD2 are released more slowly for Macs than they are for Windows. The result is that you now have most of the servers running 1.4 while Macs are all running 1.3 since 1.4 hasn't been released for the Mac yet, and now the Macs can't connect to the new-patch servers. Meaning that if your favorite COD2 server gets patched, you won't be able to connect to it with your Mac until the new version finally gets released for OSX. You may pull up the Master Server from your Mac and find only a few servers running the version of COD you're using, while the current-patch PC version has thousands.
(note: I haven't checked lately about the current patch status. They may have caught up, same patch for both systems currently, but the cycle will repeat, with Macs always being behind PC's).

personally, i don't mind the reboot. it's a clean XP SP2 install with just games on it, so it boots fairly quickly. and rebooting into Leopard is less than 25 seconds for the most part.
but anyone gaming in XP should DEFINITELY update their ATI drivers (while in Windows of course). the default bootcamp drivers are really old and pretty wimpy. i got an average of 25%-40% improvement in framerates across the board (tested in COD4, Hellgate London, and World in Conflict). this is on a 20inch aluminum iMac with HD2600 XT.
the trick is that you have to install the drivers maually. download the latest driver off the ATI site and start the executable. it'll walk you through it and may say that it's installed but it's not. you have to go to the device manager and update it manually by hitting "update driver" and then saying "have disk" when you see that button. direct it to the .inf file in the ati/support/...etc and then hit "have disk" again. then you'll see this huge list of video cards. pick out the HD2600 XT and it'll install. reboot, and you're good to go.

I've played it on the 360--great game! What I can't believe is why people persist in being played by the GPU and computer game manufacturers. It's so much simpler to buy a console that *will* play whatever's made for it for at least two or three years, no questions, no exceptions. And you can easily exceed the price of a modern console with a new graphics card--but...it's flat out crazy to me that people would persist in playing the upgrade/graphics game on their desktops and laptops. Oh well. In the meantime, the rest of us will simply pop our games into our consoles without checking anything beyond the facts that the logos match, press the power buttons, and get to playing. No installation, no uninstallation, no patches, no downloads, no compatibility checks, no keyboards, no nonsense. They "just work"! :^)

for the most part you're right on (i've got an Xbox 360 myself). but having played both COD4 on my iMac and on the 360 (on a 720p HDTV), the graphics on the iMac is far and away better and more realistic. plus, keyboard/mouse is so much more precise. but yeah, the 360 has a nice simplicity to working it.

To each their own. Personally, I'd much rather use a keyboard/mouse for accuracy and greater challenge, and I can't understand why anyone would want to play an FPS on a console. I don't consider the 'upgrade/graphics game' to be a hassle at all. That doesn't make console gaming wrong, or "crazy", it just means that I don't understand it. I'm not willing to make a judgement about console gamers though. As I said...each to their own. Sounds like you're just as puzzled on the other side.

I have a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 8200 (don't heckle me just yet) and I need to upgrade to something...shall we say...better! I've narrowed my search down to either a Macbook or MacbookPro. My use is moderate in the area of emails, web, word doc's and finanical programs but I also use it for gamming, specifically COD 2. My question is, I have no doubt that the Macbook can suite me fine for my normal usage but what about running COD 2 on it? should I opt for the MacbookPro 2.2Ghz with 4 MB SDRAM?
I am planning on partitioning the HD using Bootcamp (50/50) and running xp on one side with COD. I assume this would be sufficient.....
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

pay the extra bucks for the macbook pro. even an old game like COD2 will have a hard time on a macbook. the integrated graphics just aren't that good. although i don't have much experience with the new X3100 ones (mine is the old school macbook core duo with the 950), any 3d game is going to suffer horribly on a macbook and you'll end up with a sub-par gaming experiece that you'll always feel is kinda lame.
macbook pro is also the faster santa rosa chipset (800 mhz bus as opposed to 667 mhz), LED power-saving screen. all in all, well worth the 500 bucks more you're paying. oh, and don't pay for the 4gb from apple. it's a huge rip off. just buy the macbook pro with the standard RAM and order up two 2gb sticks from newegg or tigerdirect and install them yourself. it's easy.

But also if you get the itch to play anything newer, you will need the better graphics in the pro version. Bioshock, Quake Wars, COD4, Crysis are probably not going to be pretty. There's also screen size, the 13.3 is not enough for me.

As I am a lifelong Mac user and have never had to worry about this, can someone advise me about anti-virus software? Do I have to pay for it every year like someone told me recently, or are there FREE alternatives? all I do on the XP side is game. No matter what you need some protection, even if all you do is game. Sooner or later you may use XP to navigate to a site to download a patch for your game, a mod, read a review, receive email from a fellow gamer etc.,etc. All possible ways of getting something nasty on your computer. Even if you don't do any financial stuff on your Windows partition a virus or spyware will slow your system down, which means it will slow your games down.
IMHO, the free stuff is ok and may be sufficient if you are disciplined enough to only game in windows. In my experience the free stuff is not always on par with paid software, but again it may be suitable for your needs and budget. Make sure its a reputable developer, there are some scams that masquerade as anti-virus or anti-spyware software. Look at reviews, you may want to start here with pcworld's list of free security programs:

Thanks for the input. I've managed to get a small section of our forums devoted to running COD4 on Intel MACS (http://fkmod.com/forums/index.php?showforum=69). I think this is really where we're going to focus as there's no word on the streets yet on anyone bringing COD4 to MAC. My hope is to build a reference area mainly for those trying to get COD4 up and running via bootcamp on their machines, and related trouble shooting etc. More and more people are eyeing the switch on account of the option for dual operating systems, and while there's not a huge demand (relatively speaking) I'm hoping we might be able to help a few others get the game running on their MACS. I really found I had to jump all over a variety of forums to find the info I need to get the game and related programs up and running. My hope is to make this a one-stop-shop to get people up and running quickly so they can start playing ASAP. We only got it set up tonight, but will be putting effort in getting all the right info there. Any input suggestions etc would be welcomed.

thanksShould run fine, although you'll need to tweak your settings, maybe lower some of the texturing, anti-aliasing, resolution, in order to get good frame rates.
You'll need to install XP via Boot Camp on a separate partition. Find Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac (Utilities folder, IIRC) and follow the prompts. You'll need a current disk for Windows XP with a valid license (buy an OEM version from NewEgg - $140). I used the defaults in BCA, 32 gig partition, FAT32. If you have a lot of other games or other stuff, you may want a bigger partition, but be aware that if it's larger than 32 gig, you'll need to reformat the partition as NTFS instead of FAT32 (those prompts are part of the Windows install). You'll have to install the appropriate drivers after the install is done (insert the Leopard disk and it's done automatically) and you'll have to go to Windows Update site and load up all the latest Windows updates.

I gave up on all Mac gaming a while ago. It's to much to have to boot into Windows every time I want to play. That's why I built myself a gaming pc, which is already having problems by the way :(
Yeah Windows does have problems. Windows is already at 85% of speed of OS X, benchmarked with geekbench, when OS X is run almost 24/7, and windows is run maybe once a week.
No problem with Mac gaming. Simple with bootcamp...
1. In OS X, restart, hold option key, wait 10 seconds, select windows partition.
2. Do something while windows boot up and becomes usable (5 minutes?), such as pay your bills, drink some water, lift some weights...
3. Play game
4. To restart back to Mac OS, just click the "Start" menu, and "Log off computer" and Restart, do something else while windows shuts down.
Well, that SNIPER level is a bit*h though... Playing on the second highest difficulty.

Fricking A man. This Call of Duty 4 is like the best FPS I have ever played, and I'm playing Crysis still.
I like this game just a little bit more. (Both great)
The realism of combat is quite incredible and the story line and danger draws you in. You always feel like either you're in danger
in the heat of suspense and then at key moments you feel the victory of having an edge finally and breaking through. Well dramatized!
I've played dozens of FPS shooters, and it all started off with Wolfenstein. I've felt little innovation from FPS shooters over the years, but CoD4 is really
fun and a great war to fight.
Performance:
30-50FPS, avg 40 fps with 1680x1050 med settings and high settings on Mac Pro x1900 XT /Vista / 2GB ram is visible.

4x antialiasing on, textures and lighting all set at normal.

The current Macs should be fine for CoD4.
I suspect a current Macbook Pro would run it fine (mine is a generation old and I haven't tried it on here yet).
I play CoD4 on my XP PC. I'm running an old FX60 Socket 939 w/ a 7900GS card. I play 1280x1024 with mid-upper settings and I've never noticed lag. It's a solid system but not great by any stretch. The 8600GT i've got at work is a much faster card and that's mid range today.
I haven't run FRAPS but I don't wank off because I hit X fps. It just needs to look good and play smooth.
CoD4 looks good but it isn't super intensive. It's like Valve's engine, looks great, runs lean. My same system listed above runs full rez on my 19" and the self configuration turns almost everything to Max.
I understand that it takes a lot more horsepower to push the graphic envelope just a bit more. The complexity grows faster than the apparent visual quality gain. I do have to wonder about games like Crysis and Eldar Scrolls Oblivion. They look great but I wonder if there's a conscious effort to not optimize because having a game engine that runs like **** is somehow proof that your game is bad ass. I think, at the very least, there is a conscious decision to do things the hard way in the bleeding edge games. There's a scene in HL2 Ep2 where they're outside on a roof and they do some tricks to render the mountains. The background is a matte that moves against the sky as you move. It looks great. Sure they could have rendered the mountains way off but Valve did it for hardly any GPU cycles and it looks great.

I am playing on 1280x1024 with most settings on medium and 2x AA on but I can't help but think I could get more frames. I tried but the difference (to me) wasn't enough to justify turning it off completely. Besides, I've read that people are playing on the "highest" settings in the game, and I assume this would include AA, correct?

I couldn't figure out how to change difficulty (playing on 2nd hardest difficulty) so I just keep playing it over and over and finally beat that level (while I was in the airport waiting for a connecting flight).
From what I read the game MIGHT change difficulty slightly if you don't get pass a certain point.
Tip / Spoiler below in white text, highlight it to show:
What works for me is to sit close to the other guy. Getting to the last save point is not too difficult.
Shoot the ones coming down the ropes. You should be able to get 10 (pretty much impossible to survive if you don't kill enough of them). And keep shooting between 12 and 2 o'clock to make sure they don't get too close.

I see what you are saying but consoles don't work so well for LAN parties. Sure you can hook up online and play but LAN parties are just so much fun!! Don't get me wrong, I love my XBOX and Wii for my own personal play and when a friend comes over. But I really don't line to go online with them and play. WIth a computer I do. Strange, I know.
There are a lot of strengths to the gaming console: Having the peace of mind knowing that whatever game you put in will 'just work' is priceless. I also like the relative 'instant-on' feature of gaming consoles. And also knowing that for at least the next three years or so your console is going to be fully supported and 'up-to-date' is also a very nice feature. And then there is the nice price.
BTW, I played COD 4 on the 360 as well and its a blast. I hope that it comes out for the Wii.... some day.

I'm playing through on the second-toughtest difficult level, and the end of that level is pretty tough. I got through it by laying a spread out defence of C4 and Claymores, then likewise retreating to hide behind cover on the other side of the ferris wheel from McMillan - it's one of the few places with cover that they can't/won't sneak up behind you.
Great game, better than I expected (thought previous Calls of Duty were more linear in their level design), but the dogs are driving me nuts:
If you don't grab them, the message says to grab the dog's jaws when it bites.
If you grab it too late, the message says to grab the dog's jaws before it bites.
If you grab it too early, the message says to wait until it bites before grabbing, i.e. after.
So, as long as you grab it once, just before, during and after, you're ok.
Never mind the fact that you can down a Kamov helicopter with one shot, fight through hundreds of soldiers and armour, but a dog will kill you every time...

You might need to install the latest drivers for your card and since it's a mobility card you'd be best served with a modified driver like NGOHQ (I'm supposing you have an 8600M MBP), that should help with your performance tremendously. Overclocking your card could also bring huge gains to performance.

You could also try defragmenting the drive to smooth out the experience and experience less stuttering though the framerate will stay at pretty much the same level but it might feel just a lot smoother.

Cool - well my 2.5 Penryn (4GB RAM, same 512mb VRAM as you) comes tomorrow - so I'm hoping it'll be a decent improvement.
It's annoying, because UT4 runs brilliantly, even at the top 1900* res, and it's still graphically impressive today even though it's 4 years old. And I have to run something like COD4/Crysis at the lowest settings for it to be playable, making it look terrible compared to the 4 year old UT4, on my system!

Well, if you really want a great looking game that will run amazingly, then check out Orange Box. The graphics in HL2:Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress are all amazing. Im sure it will also run amazing on your system.
Valve are masters at optimizing their games for alot of different hardware. Even though HL2 is old, it still looks awesome. And when you see it run in 1900*... it will look as good as COD4.

I hate to say this but I've got the same system that you are getting (well, 3 gigs of ram instead of 4) and the game runs like CRAP on my brand new MPB. I cannot figure it out, I found a video on youtube of someone with a older 2.4ghz MBP pushing something like 50 FPS average which would be acceptable with maxed resolution and other eye candy turned on, and when I try and play it with the same settings I get average 25 fps with drops to 15 when the bullets start flying.
I've updated drivers, no dice. Its a brand new install of XP with a good sized partition, I'm only running the bare minimum of processes in the background and still it stutters. I have to play it on the "recommended settings" (800x600, all the fun stuff turned off) to even average close to 50FPS.
If anyone's got some recommendations I'd love to hear them, I've tried everything I can think of and the game still looks like crap.
System: 2.5ghz 15" MBP, 3 gigs of ram, 8600M GT w/ 512MB vram, 250gb 5400RPM HD, cod4 is installed on a 60gb windows XP SP2 partition. I'm currently running 167.44 WinXP32 drivers but I'm gonna switch back to the official drivers because nothing seems to fix the problem.

Never mind I just noticed they haven't updated their XP drivers in a long time
try this:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/nvidia/170series/17431.exe
That should work perfectly with your 8600M GT, if performance still is deficient, you could always try RivaTuner and try overclocking your videocard, that laptopvideo2go site has a great forum on overclocking that show stable speeds for the 8600M, choose one of the safer ones and test for stability and you'll be golden. With the kind of OCs I saw on that site and those drivers, Call of Duty 4 will run leaps and leaps better.

You should really turn of AA - this REALLY improves performance on low/mid-end graphics card. Besides, 2x AA is nearly unnoticable.

OK, well I just tried COD4 under Bootcamp (XP SP2) on my new 2.5 Penryn, 4GB RAM, 7200rpm HD, 512MB VRAM.
It doesn't run too well - it randomly stutters, sometimes terribly sometimes slightly but constantly, it's never ever smooth, even at fairly low resolutions. I've tried all settings, AA off, all resolutions etc., and I can't get it to ever be smooth. Other games are the same - Need for Speed Most Wanted, etc.
I've installed the latest 169.09 driver (inc. modded INF file) from laptopvideo2go.com.
Can anyone help?

I've just downloaded the "recommended" 171.23 driver and installed it anyway (with the modded INF file), but little improvement.
I'm using XP SP2, and I've just tried a variety of games, inc. Call of Duty 4 (demo). Call of Duty runs terribly - I HAVE to have it on the very bottom resolution (640*) for it to be playable, and even then it stutters fairly often. If I go up to 800*, the stuttering is a lot worse, not smooth at all. And 1200*/1600* are just terrible. AA is off, other settings just on their defaults.
Have you tried COD4 on your Penryn? If not, you can get the demo from gamespot...

i also have a penryn MBP 2.5/512 w/4GB RAM 250HD and I play full versions of Crysis, COD4, HL2, Rome total war, Pirates!....they all run fine (except crysis hehe)
COD4 Max settings @ 1280x720, essentially HD 720p rez. Runs beautifully, the only slow down i've noticed is when bringing the gun sight up in multiplayer. Seems like it needs optimizing.
Crysis I run @ 900x600 @ high or medium settings depending on whether i want eye candy or to play the game ;P

Here's the weird thing- I just tried Medal of Honor Airborne, and it runs fairly well, even with most thing on/high, and at 1200* res. It's not perfect, very slight stuttering and imperfections, but it's very playable. It's also a newish game (aug 07) and is graphically fairly intensive, so I was surprised it handles this better...

If you have 10.5, pick up a copy of Win XP and COD4 for PC. I run this on my iMac, it's phenomenal. $30 for the game, $77 for Win XP Pro (I work for a school so I got a discount on Windoze). Cheapest option, COD4 runs wonderfully.
That said - we are starting to see a trend, which is games are moving away from the PC platform and moving toward the consoles. Why? The consoles are "known hardware configurations". MUCH easier and more efficient for game developers.
So in the end, if you are set on COD4 (and you should be!), either the 360 or WinXP on your Intel Mac. Not a huge Xbox fan personally, I'd prefer a PS3, but... no COD4. :(
I don't by Mac games any more. Just my personal choice. Why? Been burned too many times. The last / worst one was with ID and Quake 4. They essentially neutered MP on Quake 4 for Mac users, no apologies, no fix (at least as of v1.4). That was enough for me, Aspyr won't see any more of my cash.

Anyone care to comment on the drivers they are using that yield great results?
I agree, console gaming is great, no reboots, and less hassle, it just works.
However, consoles also create more clutter in your house, I like my place to be as streamlined as it can be.
I got rid of all my consoles, and my desktops, as well as monitors.
I recently moved, and wish for my place to be as simple as can be.
I'm actually considering selling my 1080p 47inch tv and buy a samsung 32 inch 720p so it takes up less room.
Sad thing is, I will likely rebuy the ps3 when metal gear comes out.
Then I'll just hide it in the closet when I'm not using it, or cover it up with a cloth.
no way am I getting a 360 again, less they create machines that do no make so much noise!

I would think better since your CPU is relieved of a LOT of tasks (and practically only takes care of a few simple physics, geometry and networking) and the levels are much more compact and less elaborate. I personally get flying framerates on MP compared to SP but it's still laggy because of my crappy connection, I don't play much online because of that.

Played mp with 1024x768 (i think) just testing it out, and had no real problems.
Also played unreal tournament 3, had no problems, no slow downs at all, playing at the native res.
Same with Team Fortress 2, no slow down, all beautiful, settings at high, and at default res, no slow down.

From what I've read, it sounds like XP is running better than Vista.
But anyway, I have a new MacBook right now (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 512MB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM chips and factory video card running leopard), and I don't exactly have a ridiculous budget so I'm workin on getting everything required. I'm getting COD4 and XP soon, and I have Bootcamp - of course. So I was seeing what I would need to upgrade whether it'd be the video card or ram or vram or what.
I've been reading on this thread that MacBook Pros are the way to go for laptops, otherwise a desktop is what we're lookin for, but is it possible to get the necessities on a MacBook without spending obscene amounts of money.
I've played at my buddy's house on his PC and desperately want it at home, but let's just say my paychecks are holding me back. Is there a video card in particular that's a good considering its price?

I already have CoD4 on my Mac, on my windows partion.
Runs perfect on bootcamp at least, at full graphics. ;) But we all know performance is a bit weaker in Mac OS X.
I'm looking forward to this, in hope that I dont need to log over to windows all the time I want to play CoD4, when just having a little "play break", instead of logging over to windows and have to dedicate 100% of my time to play a game.
I just REALLY hope the Steam CD key(Purchased CoD4 through Steam) will work with the retail Mac version... so I dont need to buy another copy of the game. I strongly doubt I'd do that if thats my only choice for playing it on mac. I rarely buy games, so not gonna go crazy and buy 2 of the same game.

those are the ones. have a look round their site they explain everything you need to know.
you must download the drivers and the Modded INF file. you need that file for the drivers to work properly as nVidia doesnt usually include support for mobile chipsets directly (despite the chips being pretty much identical to desktop parts)
nVidia leaves the support up to the laptop manufacturers and they are nearly always way behind on drivers.
i think the basic premise is, download the drivers, download the modded INF, extract the drivers from their archive, swap the INF files, then install.
that should be all you need

Just as an update, i DID install the labtop2go drivers, and bought the game. I own a MBP 2.4GHZ Santa Rosa, and i keep the resolution at 1440 x 900 without AA, but with all the textures on the highest, and most of the settings enabled (besides specular map, and shadows), and it plays GREAT
I play with these settings online, because online the game plays alot smoother than it does in the single player. I still use these settings for single player but put it at 1280x800 when the frame rate stutters alot.
I'm getting about 50-60+ FPS online, and it feels very smooth to me.

Shadows and specular map destroy the card (shadows more so), so if you want a smooth online experience then turn those off and after a while you will forget they were off.

Almost everybody, except for a few freak cases have great frame rates on MBP. In addition, Windows needs regular defrag, otherwise it slows down to a crawl.

NO. Just stay away from Vista, at least for now. Many (most) vendors are offering a free XP downgrade option with new machines, that should be enough proof there.
Vista is a nightmare, my colleague at work spent 2 hours on the phone with MS just to install the Vista SP1 (we are in IT).
As far as games go, Vista dropped the frame rate of Half-Life from 60-ish to 15, on the same machine (only example I have).
I run COD4 on XP Pro on an Intel iMac (CD2 / 2.33 / 2GHz memory), it is as smooth as glass.

i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that's gonna happen. When PC and mac versions are released by the same publisher, then you have a decent chance of the same CD key working with both versions.
However, with COD4, you have two separate publishers. Aspyr ported the mac version, and porting the game surely cost them a significant sum of money. The only way for them to profit is to sell THEIR version.
Even if you bought the PC version, you still need to pay Aspyr for the work they did
I know it sucks. If this wasn't the case, then i'd just buy the PC version now, but I'm gonna hold out and purchase the mac version when it comes out instead (assuming i can get decent performance with it).

Think about it in this situation:
Dont you think Mac players will be able to play on servers with people on windows? If they share the same servers, then I think its more likely for them to share the same CD key.
But if the CD key from windows really doesnt work on the Mac OS X version, it sucks.
All I can give as an example of game using same serial for both OS (Only example I can give, because its only game for both OS I own), is Battlefield 2142, same key on Mac OS X and Windows.
Can only hope CoD4 does the same.

Nope, that means nothing. The mac version of Halo and the PC version can play on the same servers, but I can tell you that I personally tried using my mac version's CD-KEY with the PC version... and it wouldn't accept it.
BF2142 meets the requirement that I cited - both the mac version and pc version are published by the same publisher... EA.
Also, 2142's mac version IS the pc version, except it's wrapped in a crappy emulation package. It's not a "true" port.
And again, just THINK about it. How would it NOT be in aspyr's best interest to use their OWN unique CD Keys. They make NO MONEY if you're not buying a cd key from them.

And your MacPro or any other Mac is not some magical device. has anybody actually tried to run COD4 on MacBook instead of just being pessimistic and saying that it will not work. I know PC's Play COD 4 with X3100, yes, the frame rates are low, but hey its COD4 with out having to spend an extra $1000 on a computer w/ a graphics card. I would prefer if someone would test it with this:
2.4 GHz MB
4GB ram
intel X3100
with XP Professional:apple:

I have the exact same setup and play it on Windows XP. The game works fine on there..with online multiplayer fps between 45-75 depending on the server.

Aspyr announced that they will be bringing COD4 to the Mac in May 08!
Hmmmm, thats interesting b/c its sunday MAY 25 and there is not even a mention of COD4 on Aspyr's site.
EDIT: sorry my search in Aspyr just did not show COD4 for mac you have to go to the "Comming Soon" tab as a search in the search bar will turn up nothing.

they changed the release date to "summer '08" earlier this month.
See, I'm not as angry about it as you because I never actually expected them to release it in May :D
It could still end up being the LAST day of summer... or even later - who knows.
Aspyr generally makes decent ports, but I don't really like the way they run their business. They never give us any info about upcoming ports besides announcing that they're "working on it."
If they actually bothered to say something like "we're terribly sorry, but we can't finish coding the game until apple fixes [insert something here] in the next system update" i'd feel a lot better.
I know that there's a lot of risk when you announce release dates... which is why Blizzard never actually tells you what date they're gonna release a patch - because if they miss that date then all hell breaks loose.
But come on... tell us SOMETHING Aspyr.
but they won't

I'm pretty sure this has come up countless times in other game forums, but amazon.com and other companies simply estimated their own release date when accurate information isn't available from the game publisher.
There's no reason for Aspyr to secretly tell Amazon.com the release date while not mentioning it to ANYBODY else...
They're just as much in the dark as we are... except they have a nice web site to display their guesses on - something that each of us doesn't have.

I rest my case.
i.e. NONE of those sites have any idea what they're talking about. This happens with every game that has an unknown release date.... probably because it's hard for them to get people to sign up for a preorder if they don't provide you with a date... even if it's fake.

Mass Effect for Windows should be coming in the mail in a couple of days. That should hold me off for a while.
After that I'll have to decide if I want to spend some more time with Team Fortress 2 waiting for the mac version of COD4, or if I'll just go for the pc version.

From Aspyr's website:
Aspyr Media, Inc. announced today that the release of Call of Duty ® 4: Modern Warfare ™ for Mac has been pushed back slightly to the third quarter of 2008.
Aspyr Studios has chosen to continue to spend more time in development with the title in order to ensure a high-quality gaming experience for Mac gamers.

So it looks like it is going to be delayed to later in the summer. July to August is now looking to be the timeframe.:(

So.... where is it?
On Aspyr's page it's still listed under "Coming soon".

Picked COD4 on Saturday at Fry's. I get the same "not authorized" error. You should definitely go to Aspyr's support website and open a trouble ticket. The louder the complaints, the faster they'll take the issue seriously.
IMO Aspyr has terrible QC if they actually shipped a product that won't install and work on a stock Mac configs. (It's not like the PC world where they have a million different configs to test.)
I suspect the problem is related to the DRM/copy protection, but we'll have to wait for the official word.
In the meantime, has anybody gotten this game to work?

just got it at Fry's earlier today and have the same problem. Did anyone try opening a ticket on Aspyr's support site? I just did and hopefully someone will know what's going on. I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that there's a cd key on the back of the manual but it doesn't ask for one during installation.
Hopefully this gets fixed, I don't want to be regretting not getting Spore instead :(

lol, I've been searching online for anyone else having this problem but it seems that we are the only three people to purchase the game.
Is this the reward I get for patiently waiting for a mac version instead of just getting it for windows? No wonder mac gamers don't exist, the games are released a year later and don't work.
EDIT: So apparently there's six reviews (http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/TR102LL/A) up on the apple store for the game and nobody's mentioning the problems we're having. This is the first the first time I bought a game for my mac that wasn't also for pc (all of Blizzard's games) and it looks like the last.

Just got this in from Aspyr:
Unfortunately, the copy of Call of Duty 4 that you have is a faulty version of the game. The store in which you purchased the game from was not supposed to distribute the disks.
To get a disk replacement please send the disc (no packaging, or any included material), the receipt, and a note explaining the issue to:
Aspyr Media Inc.
Attn: Returns
PO Box 5861
Austin, TX 78763
We will be able to send you a working version of Call of Duty 4 when the new discs become available. If you would like a pre-paid envelope please reply back to this email with your name and address and we will send it as soon as possible.
We would also deeply appreciate if you could provide us with any of the following information:
Name of the store you bought the game from.
City in which the store is located.
State
Zip code
Store number of the retail outlet (if available) which can usually be found on the receipt.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Thank you for contacting Aspyr Media Technical Support.

I got the same email too. It's very unusual for a software publisher to ship a product that is this screwed up. Usually products can be patched, but this is bad run of discs, which means that someone at the publisher wasn't checking the manufacturing samples.
Also, publishers usually do only one batch of discs for distribution, which means that most likely the entire run of discs is screwed.

Is it just me or WTF! These people do this for a living and they ship bad discs right from the get go, un-f'n-believable I say! Like how hard is it to do a check of a production disc before you pack and ship it to be sold...? Total hack jobs I say, it's a video game not brain surgery...guess they gotta quit givin out degrees to potheads with a 6 month certificate...
These morons should be fired, period. I can only imagine how many other bugs and shotty work is in the actual game, since they can't even get the first run discs to install, bah to these n00bs!!!
Sad thing is, I'll still get the damn game, but not until I see how they reconcile their n00b arses...

I was hoping that the disks aren't actually bad, but that the game won't play if it "thinks" the system date and time are prior to the "official" release date. No joy; unless the "official" date is after October 10th and setting the date later than 10/10 makes it work. Looks like I'll be waiting for Aspyr to send me a pre-paid envelope; if it takes 'em longer than a week, I'll be returning to Fry's with the Aspyr e-mail, asking to speak to a manager, and requesting my money back. If that doesn't work, a letter to Fry's with a cc: to the Washington State Attorney General along with a copy of the Aspyr e-mail and a copy of the receipt might get the job done.
Too bad; I was really looking forward to playing this game, natively, on the Mac.

Shipping unusable, unpatchable, broken product to retail, and then requiring your paying customers to return the disc for a replacement is about as bad as it gets for a software publisher.
I worked in the computer game industry for 6 years as a producer for two major publishers, and we shipped lots of product, and I never saw anything this bad. We never had to recall a product that was shipped to retail. If a game had a problem, we sometimes had the first patch ready for online download before the product actually showed up in stores. It usually takes 4 weeks or more from the disc manufacturing run at the plant to the product hitting the shelves at retail - plenty of enough time to get your act together.
In the case of COD4 someone was asleep at the switch; most likely manufacturing samples weren't properly checked before they okayed the manufacturing run. Worse, nobody actually checked the shipping product (a publisher's last chance to identify problems about a week before retail delivery).
These facts are obvious because the Aspyr website had no mention of the problem with this title even after the launch date; indeed, the website still had the "COD4 - Coming Soon" notices up, which is deplorable for a publisher with product on the shelves.
I don't know for certain, but I suspect that the problem is from a copy-protection process applied during manufacturing (such as SecuROM by Sony DADC). Aspyr could have shipped a working gold master to the plant, but it may have been screwed up in manufacturing - still no excuse for not checking the sample discs.
And Aspyr blaming retail for putting "faulty" discs on their shelves is really lame. That's what retail does; you ship them product, and they put it on the shelves.
What a mess.

Incase you guys havent realized, the official release isnt until September 30th, so if you are buying them somewhere right now,and not preordering them, then they are likely doing so illegally (the store that is) thats why Aspyr wants the name of the store...they are likely to get in some serious ****. I runs pretty smooth on my MBP, the only thing I had to deactivate was the AA and Sync every frame option. The resolution works perpfect at 1440x900. The only thing I am not comfortable with is the 1.5.549 version it has about 443 servers compared to the 1.7 version on pc which has about 14,000 .

Chali, can you please tell us the framerates you're getting? And what settings (low, med, high)?
The only reason I ask is because 30FPS is good to some people, while for others (like me) it's pretty laggy.
I'll only get it if average FPS is 40 (even though acceptable framerates for COD4 is 50+).
