Twice tonight I have opened an iChat window and typed my message, just to notice that my keyboard wasn't working. I then moved to all other open applications and my keyboard doesn't work in anything. Even the Caps Lock button doesn't work, I press it and the light doesn't turn on/off. Shortly after (5mins or so) everything is working fine again. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

I am currently not experiencing that problem at all.. i think it may be a mbp defect thus go to apple care to solve the problem. seems to me to be the best bet for you. maybe some faulty wiring or what not

Only problem is I can't reproduce it. I don't know whats causing it either, so I can't take it to the Genius Bar and be like, see...

I am also currently experiencing the same issue. It seems to come and go, but it is very annoying, so I have resorted to an external keyboard.

I was able to fix the problem temporarily by putting cardboard between the computer and battery. This worked for awhile, but now the keyboard becomes randomly unresponsive both with and without the cardboard.

My guess is the keyboard connector is loose, but I'll have to wait for Thanksgiving break before I have a chance to bring my MBP to an Apple Store for repair.

Yes, this is a very common problem with the SR MBPs, and your guess is exactly right; this is due to a improperly connected ribbon cable. And your intuition, too, is correct in thinking that a Genius can fix the issue easily. This has occurred to enough users that they will not hassle you about it. And the fix is easy, you'll be in and out the store with your MBP, no problem.

Good luck. I have a MB not a MBP but am having the same issue. The genius at my store this morning said she had never heard of the problem, there was nothing in the support system about it, and after having me try to "make it happen" and of course it behaved perfectly, I was sent home without her even touching the computer. Her best suggestion was for me to bring it in later in the week if I was having the same problem and they would send it out for a new keyboard since they didn't have any in stock.
On top of the keyboard (and I'm not sure if this is related or separate) but last night and just a few minutes ago when it did it, it didn't start working by putting it to sleep and waking it up as it has most of the time in the past. When I rebooted the system just hung on a blue screen for 10 mins until I manually shut it down.

When I took mine in yesterday they gave me a new machine. Not even one of the ones they have in the back for replacement, a brand new one, full wires and documentation and what not. The did look up in their system to see if I called Apple Care about the issue like I said I did.

I'm on hold (again) with Support. I've called them twice this afternoon and this time it may have done the trick. The first guy wanted me to run an extended hardware test and said if nothing came up that they would have to send it in for repairs. This guy is much more helpful and said he said that I have the right to have an exchange of this issue and is doing something to make it happen.
So after talking with him more he said if I had bought this online they would do an exchange but because I bought this in an Apple store it will depends on the genius I get. Some will agree to exchange, others won't. He gave me the case number and told me to go back to the store and tell them I want a new computer and if I have any problems to have them call tech support.
Ugh...apparently it's another hour drive to the Apple store...again! I think I'm going to call them first to see what they'll do before I waste the gas.

Update: I called the store and they said since I had a case number to make an appt with a genius, bring the MacBook in with the box and everything along with the case number and they would exchange it for me. I'm heading out now since it takes an hour to get there so I'll update this when I get back.

Update 2: I have a new MacBook. There were no questions asked once I gave them the case number and told them that AppleCare said to bring it in for an exchange and I was out within 20 minutes (including them installing my extra RAM). We'll see if I get the same problem with this one. My fingers are crossed that I don't!

I would guess it is a software problem, cause I occasionally happens to my Santa Rosa Macbook too, but after rebooting, it works fine again. Maybe there is something wrong with Leopard?

Guys, I bought a MBP last week and already experiencing problems with the keyboard. Stops responding for no reason and start responding after few seconds or a minute.
Let's see what the Danish support guys say about it!

I think it could be with Leopard. This hasn't happened with many of the machines of similar build (i don't believe you can run Tiger on a SR MacBook) and this is the first time I have seen it crop up since the MacBook came out in 2006. Wouldn't be surprised if 10.5.1 fixes this problem. If it's not software, it could be a loose ribbon connector. Same thing happened on my old HP laptop, and one click of the cable helped that problem out.

I have been experiencing that this last weekend. My keyboard was cutting out once in a while, much like a loose connection somewhere.
So I have an appointment at the genius bar this evening. Yet it was working again last night and this morning.
Here and I have finally gotten it up to speed, final cut express, cs3... etc
I assume this is a quick fix if I leave it there this evening. Any body offer any insight?

I have the mid-line white SR. I sold my old 2.16 (which wasn't that old) for the exact price I spent on it. I swapped teh HDs and the RAM because I wanted the 2GB chip in the SRMB and save up to get a matching one later. Plus, I have the Hitachi 7200rpm 200GB drive, so that also came with me.

I can't get Tiger to run on it properly at all, even when I do a reinstall of it. I called support and they said that the upcoming release of 10.4.11 will fix all of the issues with hardware compatibility and Tiger. The SRMBs are the very first "built-for-Leopard" computers that they've put out, so Tiger was just a pain-in-the-ass for me to install. I was told to expect compatibility issues until the upgrade is issued. It doesn't make me happy, but I understand. It would have been nice to put out something on software update to at least get the mouse, keyboard and graphics running... they are only drivers so it shouldn't be that difficult...

So, I'm using Leopard even though I REALLY wanted to wait for 10.5.1 to be released first. I'm having some compatibility issues with drivers and programs (especially the utilities, which I am anal about using once a week to keep everything smooth), but I was expecting that to happen since the rest of the world always seems to take a while to get their act together for a new Mac OS. As soon as Alsoft comes out with their free upgrade, the happier I will be. Same goes for Copycat.

After a problem-free week with a new SR Macbook I've experienced the keyboard issue twice today.

Sooo, this seems like the iMac Freeze equivilant on the MB.

I recently bought a MB like last week and I have noticed this issue a few times. Mostly when waking the pc up. Question though, anyone experiencing this use a BT or USB mouse? I wanted to experiment by having my wife put her MB to sleep without the mouse, then when I check it later on tonight see if it does it again.

I haven't laid out any test plans to see what could reproduce it 90% but I want to really experience it to get a good feel for what could possibly have it happen. Some thoughts are; extensive use (ie., heat), rapid put to sleep (shutting lid though this shouldn't matter one bit), software update? (RDC), external mouse.

I think the "loose connector" was a rash and quick judgement that is more than likely incorrect by the genius. If it was a loose connector why would the keyboard freeze up, use ONLY the mouse to relaunch finder and the keyboard work again? All without moving the MB at all.

At this point the best thing to do is everyone log these issues to Applecare so they have a good amount of reported issues so they can get to work on a fix.

My BlackBook cut out twice last night while I was writing an essay, and after a discussion with an amazing AppleCare rep named Andrew, who discussed Canadian Football more than anything, he went on to explain that this issue is being reported as DOA (Dead on Arrival), and Apple would be sending my computer out to be examined to rectify this issue. Based on this information, I would say there is some defect along the way with the SR MacBooks, but Apple is doing an amazing job of taking care of it. Got my case number and Andrew said I could head to the Apple Store 3 miles away and do an over-the-counter swap no problem. :D Cheers to Apple's fine support team and my new BlackBook.

I bought a SR MBP about 5 months ago and never experienced any real keyboard issues (aside from having to press a button twice in order for it register every once in a while). But, a couple of days after I upgraded to Leopard, my keyboard started to cut out intermittently for several hours. I reinstalled Leopard and it hasn't cut out ever since (knock on wood).

i had a problem with the down arrow key and i just took it straight to the genius bar, and they replaced it after a few minutes of testing. Now i'm having a problem that the period button(.) isn't sensitive enough.

I think its the keyboards problem because with the same pressure as other buttons, the period button doesn't work. I have to press it twice most of the time. But so far its working for this post haha. I was thinking of taking back to the genius bar and have them take a look at it. heres a example test i wanted them to do,hit the key a lot and then hit another key. heres a sample:

same pressure and frequency. Is this good grounds for an exchange? i just got it two days ago my macbook that is, but i won't be able to get to the apple store untill the 21st. its still within the time period i hope.

I have had my MB (recent update with SR) for about a week now and I am having the same keyboard freezing issue. It seems to happen in a random pattern and with any application but almost everyday. It looks and feel like a bug in Leopard.

So far I got it to happen while typing on the search field for the Address Book help, and even filling the rebate form for my free printer on the Apple web site using Safari.

I have a wireless Logitech USB mouse but it doesn't seem to be the problem since it has also happened when I am not using it. One thing I noticed is that I started getting this issue after enabling Time Machine.

Is somebody else using Time Machine ? I think I will disable it for a couple of days and see what happens.

I installed leop on my black macbook that i bought in sept. All of a sudden i am having this issue where the keyboard turns off temporarly and then turns back on a little while late. It is just as you all describe, the only reason i post is because the fact that i am not running a SR macbook, and it only started ater leop10.5 install, it may be more clearly a os issue.
Also, i have noticed the issue happens more often after the computer has been left in sleep, or forced to turn off by itself due to battery issues

take it easy:(

edit: i do not use time machine

I am in the middle of writing a paper. Last night i allowed my computer to run out of battery while it was sleeping. This morning i pluged it in and opened the screen to that fuzzy, you have no power, thing. Once it came to life i navigated to the internet with my mouse and read some news. When i tried to comment the keyboard didnt work. A few seconds of letting it be made it work (after i hit a key to notice it didnt work) note: if i press a key repeatedly it does not speed it up. and may slow it down. Now i type for a second. i resume mouse control for a min or two, and try to type an email. Same problem.
Without the fluff, i repeated the basic process of switching between keyboard and mouse in that order.
My best guess, a very uninformed one, is that the OS has some power management protocols that allow the keyboard to be disabled, or something that manages the switch between mouse pad and keyboard so that only one can work...
tell me if you can recreate the bug this way

I just started having this issue on my SR Macbook today :/

Pretty similar to what other people were saying, it's intermittent. The first time it happened, I restarted and it was fine. Then it happened again... and I was too lazy to restart but then it worked again a few minutes later. It's happened about 5 times in the past few hours or so..

Well, I installed the Leopard 10.5.1 upgrade yesterday. Then I worked on my MB for a good couple of hours editing contacts in my Address Book, no issues at all.

Today I have been working most of the morning on it, mainly typing code. Not at problem. So, is this it ? Did Apple got this fix ?

One thing I also did was to set the sleep time to 20 minutes and the screen sleep time to 15. I think the defaults were too agressive. I also disable the screen saver. I am planning to set these settings back to default values today and see what happens.

Anybody seeing the issue after upgrading to 10.5.1 ?

Okay, this is definitely a bug in Leopard somehow!

When I ran Tiger, my keyboard worked fine. Then I upgraded to Leopard, and I've noticed A LOT of tiny but VERY annoying bugs such as this keyboard issue.

Often I have to press a key TWICE for it to register. This is VERY annoying when chatting with people on Adium for example, as it often cuts the first letter :(

On top of that, I've even installed the latest update.

Though I haven't had my keyboard not responding for hours at a time... fortunately.

PLEASE APPLE! FIX THIS! (and all the other issues!)

My problem just started happening TODAY. I use my SRMBP all of the time and I've never had this issue. I got it in late September. I upgraded to Leopard 2 weekends ago and still didn't have the problem. I upgraded to 10.5.1 the day it was released, and still no problem. I used it all day yesterday ... still no problem. But all of a sudden, this morning when I awoke it from sleep I noticed the problem with the unresponsive keyboard issue you guys are describing. I haven't rebooted yet, but I'm going to try it and see what it does. I may just reinstall 10.5 and see what that does. Regardless this is beyond annoying and there are no apple stores around me, besides CompUSA.

The nearest apple store is like 3 hours away in Atlanta, GA. So going there is definitely NOT an option...

Ok, just talked to apple care - this seems to be a new problem to the guy I talked to.

Basically he told me to repair disk permissions and then had me pop out the battery, unplug the machine and hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds (resets PMU?). Then start the computer while holding down option, CMD, 'r' and 'p' until you hear the start-up tone twice. This resets something as well - not sure what though.

So I did this and everything seems to be ok right now, plus the computer is a bit more snappier too!

Give it a try, I let you know if I have the issue again.

His final idea was to wipe the HD, install Leopard and recover all my data from time machine - a last resort.

EDIT - He also said to open up activity monitor if it happens again and see if something is hogging the processor.

I had zero issues with my new MacBook (purchased the day of the latest revision release) until about 3 days ago. My keyboard randomly stopped working. I was able to quickly fix it by simply closing the lid to make the system sleep, then opening the lid to wake it. The next day, I had the same thing happen again. It hasn't happened since.

It definitely appears to be a software issue. I have installed no other software other than what came with the system and I haven't tinkered with any system files or settings.

My keyboard became unresponsive again. So 10.5.1 didn't fix the problem

I called Apple Support and they asked me to call them back ASAP when I had 30 to 40 minutes available for troubleshooting (?). They provided an incident number to escalate the issue to a Leopard specialist.

I am not sure why Apple doesn't seem to be aware of this issue. The web is full of forums reporting the same problem. Even their own forums.

I am now also having difficulties attempting to shutdown, my MB just doesn't want to. I have to do a hard shutdown. So I guess I'll be logging into a different forum for this one.:(

Excellent news but from what everyone else is saying this is not gonna cure it. I'm hoping this is a software problem and the new update will cure it.

Anybody here had a new sr macbook for longer than a week and not had this problem?

Got mine last Friday, used it for some time now and it's fine. Sometimes I'm typing and and it sort of gets dyslexic or seems to miss keys but it's probably just my inability to type on this weird keyboard (I can type over 125 WPM though it's only able to be done on a Keytronic keyboard).

But as I use this one, it gets better & better -- currently hitting about 70WPM bursts. These keys are weird but I'm not minding too much. My folks' iMac (white) bluetooth keyboard is hard to type on fast too. Apple *needs* to contract with Keytronic, there is no other keyboard I have found that can handle fast typing without causing wrist pain. The key (pardon) is to be able to press keys with the pinky and the key slides down on well engineered posts so one doesn't have to wiggle their pinky even the slightest. Any resistance and a third muscle is used to "force" the key down and along comes Mr. Carpal Tunnel! Amazes me all the time how people are willing to sacrifice their wrist motility to a pretty, but lousy keyboard. Try it yourself on a regular keyboard; press the 'P' key with your pinky, do you have to adjust slightly to make it drop or does it just fall in? I'll certainly not use this SR macbook for serious documents, it would be painful.

It happened again. I had the MacBook connected to AC power, used it for an hour, stepped away for about 30 seconds, came back and keyboard was not working. I tried pushing a variety of keys and waiting for about 5 minutes. Nothing. I shut the lid, went out for a few hours, came back, opened the lid, and it still wasn't working. I had to reboot.

This is so goddamn annoying. Even if sleeping/waking the computer is a temporary "fix", I don't want to have to do that every day as it shuts down my internet connection.

I am also experiencing this problem as of the past week or so. It definitely did not occur under Tiger, and sleeping the MBP does fix it.

The other, easier fix is to hold down a single key for 15 seconds or so in a text box...it will eventually realize that someone is trying to use the keyboard and start responding again, without having to kill your Internet connection.

For the people who are experiencing this, is your Leopard install an "upgrade", "archive and install", "erase and install", or a machine that came with Leopard pre-installed?

I am wondering if upgrading from Tiger is causing some sort of problem here. People experiencing wake-from-sleep issues with MB/MBP often find it to be upgrade related.

EDIT: apparently this is related to waking the keyboard from hibernate? a post on apple discussions tracked down the specific power state (mode 3) when unresponsive

My MacBook is brand new with Leopard pre-installed.

I fail to see how this has anything to do with hibernating since it sometimes happens during active use. I will literally have the MacBook in my lap, mousing around, then I go to type and nothing comes out.

matticus008
Nov 20, 2007, 09:00 PM
Well it's definitely not an upgrade issue (Erase and Install for me) or a hibernate issue (this MBP has not entered hibernate mode for over a month). A PRAM reset does seem to fix it, at least so far.

I'll remain skeptical for a few days, but it's on 29 hours now with no recurrence. EDIT: Nope, the problem is back.

I too have this issue. I have a 2.2GHz Santa Rosa MacBook Pro.

It never did this for me in Tiger, but once I upgraded to Leopard, the keyboard would randomly stop working for 3-4 minutes at a time. Really, really annoying. It only starts doing this after you go to sleep, as far as I can tell. 10.5.1 didn't help anything.

It's not a matter of "my key isn't responsive! I have to type it twice!" like some people are saying. It's a matter of "my computer doesn't detect anything from my keyboard at all."

Here too. C2D MacBook. Fine w. Tiger - started freezing after long sleeps w. Leopard. Seems to be app. related? I'll be in Safari won't work. Open Word and works. Go back to Safari, works on page cached, open a new one - won't work. Only reliable solution is restart.

It happened again last night and this morning. A sleep/wake fixed it.

This is really starting to piss me off.

There's new information that indicates that a permissions repair gone bad may be the culprit here.

Updating prebindings is suggested as a remedy. Since doing that, I have not had a problem. The PRAM reset didn't work--the problem came back after two days. This seems to be sticking.

In Terminal:
sudo update_prebinding -force -root /
When it returns to the prompt, reboot your computer.

So its been a few weeks now since this problem went away. I THINK what fixed this was a archive full install of 10.5 rather than the upgrade install like I had to do when I got my laptop with drop in leopard.
The genius bar guy really helped and isolated it as that being the problem
so good luck all and maybe keep this in mind

i've been tracking this issue on the macrumors since it cropped up. i got my first mac, a macbook, on 11/10. have had an instance or 2 where it missed a letter or the trackpad hung for a second but yesterday i had the full blown keyboard lock up. the macbook had been on my desk and after a couple of hours of inactivity i took it downstairs and it was fine for a couple of minutes then a full lock that i had to restart to get going. the trackpad did continue to work.

it's a SR macbook, leopard was preinstalled and is updated to 10.5.1

Does anyone from Apple look at this thread?

Probably not. However, some guy at apple discussion forum mentioned that
Apple acknowledged that they are working on this problem.

I had my MacBook go about 10 days without the keyboard freezing on me. I think you have just been lucky so far. It will happen again.

I'm in the same boat.
Also I had to restart my SR MB 2.2 for it to find my USB mouse again (a normal microsoft one, sorry but they're just great value ;-))

My SR MacBook is 4 - 5 weeks old, and the right arrow key is very iffy, unless you really hit it hard.

What is the best way to approach resolving the issue. Do I make a Genius Bar appointment and take it in, or do I call Apple.

Thanks
Susanne

I too have these issues on my SR MBP running 10.4.11.

There is clearly both an issue with Leopard and also clearly an issue with other MBPs not running Leopard, such as me. (See posts above.)

I have had this issue TWICE. First time keyboard freezes, take it in, get a new topcase. Second time, take it in get a new topcase, keyboard, and logic board. I've had the new logic board for a day and so far it works! We'll see.

I was very interested to see that some people in this forum have gotten new machines. I would like to ask people to post the store where they're getting their machines services, since clearly the level of service varies greatly at different stores. For instance, at the

Apple Store

in the

Old Orchard Mall
in Skokie, Illinois

my experiences have been rather frustrating. I was disappointed when they failed to attempt to find out what the problem was before switching out the keyboard initially. In the interim I attempted to purchase a wireless keyboard, which wouldn't pair properly in the store. They refused to sell me another keyboard because, according to them, there must have been a problem with my bluetooth board that was somehow related to the keyboard - logic board issue. I straight out told the employee that there was no basis for concluding anything like that (as my bluetooth was otherwise working fine) and I asked to return the wireless keyboard for a new one. We tested the keyboard on four machines. It failed on two. He then concluded once again that the problem was with my machine. I concluded that he had either had too much coffee that morning or that he was merely impersonating a reasoning biped without feathers and decided to come back later. I did so, bought another wireless keyboard, which are pretty cool in their own right, and, of course, the problem was not with my machine. Now the repairs have been done once again, and though they replaced almost 2000 USD worth of equipment on my machine they still refused to run a basic hardware diagnostic to identify the actual problem, and of course they also refused to just give me a new machine. I can only hope that service elsewhere is better.

Happened to me as well today. Also, the cursor sometimes jumps to different places in the text when typing...

Just FYI, this is an issue that most people are attributing to Leopard at this point; there are countless MBPs and MBs that are affected, and almost all have Leopard installed. Mine had the same problem, but a restart has fixed it at least temporarily.

I had this problem with my MBP 2.4 after upgrading to Leopard. Resetting the PRAM made it go away completely; it's been over a week.

hmm, not only leopard has this issue. MBP C2D 2.4, tiger 10.4.11. Experiencing random lockups of the keyboard and trackpad about three, four times a day (computer is powered on for 10-12 hours/day)

It started one week ago with only the keyboard locking up occasionally for 10-30 seconds. Since two days back the trackpad also stop respond in the same way as the internal keyboard, at the same time.
Today it got even worse. The keyboard and trackpad got unresponsive and wouldn't come back even though I waited for like 10 minutes, so I closed all running applications with my bluetooth mouse (which always works!) and restarted os x. When the os had finnished reloading the situation was still the same, unresponsive keyboard and trackpad. Shut down the computer, removed the power cord and battery and put it all back. Started os x again. Still the same. In my frustration I punched (lightly) on the keyboard and, it all came back to normal... weird I know. Seems almost like my issue is hardware related now.

Edit: Since the above mentioned situation I haven't had such serious lockups any more. I still have unresponsive keyboard occasionally, but it only lasts for about 5 seconds each time. Trackpad now works all the time.

Hope to see an update that solves this mess really soon... damn :apple:, I thought these computers were the best, but I'm actually thinking of going back to my winXP-thinkpad untill this is fixed :apple:

That seems to be a temporary fix for some but not others.
