Since upgrading to leopard I've had War3 crash on me twice. I mean total crash - screen locks up, everything totally unresponsive. Force quit is the only option. Happens with no warning, seemingly at random. Anyone else having problems since upgrading? (this is on a core duo macbook, btw)

Sorry, I haven't had any problems as of yet. I have noticed better performance when playing Dota though. :) Have you checked the console logs? When does this occur? Upon launch, during a game, or a certain map?

This occurs during the game, randomly, in DotA games. And I haven't noticed any improved performance. :(

lol Edot, what's up man? You still playing on your Edot account or do you have a new one? I'm still playing... but I try to stay away from those awful custom games... :p True skill ftw :D

Try re-installing WC3

It keeps happening... making the game unplayable. Nobody else is having problems?

I've played several Frozen Throne games with a couple buddies of mine. We chat on Skype during the game, haven't had any problems at all. Did you remember to patch to 1.21?

I haven't played on my edot account for a few months. But yes I am still playing, mostly custom, but I am up for a standard game anytime!

yeah, of course. The weird thing is that sometimes I can play for an hour with no problem. It's totally out of the blue.

Just played again for 2.5 hours, not a single issue. This is on 10.5, an erase and install on my Mac Pro with 2gigs of RAM and the ATI 1900XT.

Where are those located? I can't find any war3 logs more recent than July 2007.

Yeah I don't know what seems to be the problem. Have you tried reinstalling it yet? I didn't read that you have tried that

QCassidy352
Nov 12, 2007, 04:24 PM
I have not tried reinstalling yet because my Reign of Chaos CD is in Boston, and I am in DC. I only play TFT, so haven't kept the ROC CD handy for a long time. I can reinstall when I'm in Boston in a month.

On the plus side, the game has not crashed the last 2 times I've played, so that's something. :)

No random freezing for me.

so it's just me... guess that means any fix is going to have to be by me (rather than by blizzard or apple). :-/ Oh well, won't have much time to play until december anyway (when I can get that ROC CD to reinstall).

just crashed again, after playing longer than I usually do. Maybe the GMA 950 gets overtaxed after a while?

While you are waiting to reinstall you can try removing any preference files from:

~/Library/Preferences/

Check here for any crash logs:

~/Library/Logs

Try opening console.app and see if you can find any error messages

Otherwise, reinstalling it should fix the problem.

well, I removed the preference files, and still had a crash the next time I played. As far as the crash logs go... I have a ridiculously long crash log. I don't know what to make of it, but it goes on, and on, and on. There are tons of errors over a really long period of time. I think at least some of the errors relate to the problems that DotA has on the mac (doesn't play some sounds, for example). Should I look for anything in particular?

Do you think it's possible the game is crashing because of something with the video card (GMA 950)? I know that it's under more strain in leopard... and the computer does get ridiculously hot playing war3... maybe the crappy, crappy GMA 950 just can't keep up?

I'm not sure why that would be the case. My iBook G4 with an ATi Radeon 9200 w/ 32 MB of VRAM ran the game with like 18 fps... no crashes. Probably a software problem, unless the GMA950 overheats unlike the 9200 I had. Still don't know, sorry...

yeah, I think it's more likely to be a software problem too. But I'm just running a standard install of leopard and war3 with TFT... I don't have other programs running at the same time... so how could I be the only one with a software conflict? (then again, how could I be the only one with the problem if it's a GMA 950 problem... :( )

The only issue I have encountered is playing Defense of the Ancients. The Unreal Tournament sounds such as, "first blood" and "double kill" are no longer audible.

My War 3 crash log is 223 pages when put in to a word doc.

The last date is 7/15/07. It's all very unintelligible for me. :( But since the last date is well before these crashes started... what can I make of that?

Anyone think it's possible that TM syncing could cause this?? Since I've started disconnecting my TM drive when I play it hasn't happened once. It's a bus powered usb 2 drive FWIW.

Is there anyone who plays with a TM drive and has no problems?

QCassidy352,
I am having the same exact problems you are. After my update to leopard been having problems with crashes in DotA. I have not yet retried to install War III yet... and I do have TM as well.. However, I know for a fact that it is not TM related because I've had some with and w/out. In fact several times I will have TFT lock up when i try to quit. I general minimize and then force quit because it locks up.
Have you found a solution yet?
I think I am going to try to re-install TFT and see if i get better results.

Interesting that you had the problem with dota and on a core duo MacBook (same as me). Coincidence?

Anyway, I reinstalled (actually copied the install from a machine that wasn't having problems) and the problem has not recurred. So try the reinstall; worked for me.

I had the same exact issue. I looked around and tried to reinstall WCIII.
I had issues uninstalling WCIII on Leopard, so I decided just to delete the Warcraft folder.
When I went to reinstall WCIII, which worked fine, but now it crashes on startup.
I get this error in the console:

did you also delete the preferences file from the library? (~/library/preferences/com.blizzard.warcraftIII)

For the previous post, not only must you delete your WCIII folder, but u must also go into your library - preferences. and delete anything to have to do with battle.net and WCIII.

Also, reinstalling WCIII still got me no fix. Every-time I play I have to minimize before shutting down and then 99% of the time I end up force quitting.... However, I finally found a common anomaly... It only occurs when i play a battle.net game, more specifically DotA.

If anyone has any insight. It would be much appreciated. I am tired of the force quitting...

And Jim, that freeze on quitting warcraft 3 is not to do with DotA, it is to do when you are on battle.net. It is a known issue which sadly has not been fixed in the most recent patch.

Anyone have any news on the the damn port problems? Every few games it says the port needed is already in use and then I have to quit the game (which usually involves a forced quit, mind you) and start it again.

that's yet another issue that I have. Frankly, I've taken to playing on XP. I can host with listchecker, get all of the DotA sounds, don't have to force quit, and don't get the "port in use" error. That's a lot of advantages, and it's worth the reboot, IMO.

So if you play a game of dota you can hear the sounds like "first blood" or "killing spree?"

You can quit the game after playing on battle.net without having to force quit?

And you can (consistently) play multiple battle.net games in a row without getting a "port in use" error?

I have not seen the "port-error" yet but it might be because I often play only few games in a row on battle.net. I do have the problem with a complete lockup of my MacBookPro when I try to quit the game after playing on battle.net. Windows xp is a solution I use for gaming events, but since blizzard games are supposed to work on mac I would really enjoy playing them in OSX without rebooting. Windows xp stinks ugliness every time I boot into it. So if someone finds a solution I really would like to see it posted here.

I have also tried to play Starcraft: BroodWar in Leopard and I can't get the game to boot. It just jumps in the dock a few times after I click "Ok" in the startupdialog and then quits.

I do have the latest updates for all applications installed, including games.

I've read quite a number of posts on blizzard game problems with Leopard now and I really hope someone finds a fix for these errors soon. I also have the problem with writing capitals in rtf-formatting in Gmail with the new Safari 3.1 update to sum up my current apple-problems. This is the wrong thread for a discussion about that issue but if anyone finds a fix please send me a message or post a link here.

I have a question not related to the original question but about WC3.

I just bought my first apple a few days ago (2.5 ghtz MBP) and I installed WC3 on it and updated everything.

My question is, is there anyway of playing the game without having the CD inserted? Thats going to be a bummer to have to carry that thing around with me. I have a legitamate copy of the game, just wishing there was a No-CD workaround that didnt involve making a 700MB disc image and putting it on my desktop. Anyone have any tips?

EDIT: Now that I look at it the update logs say that the patch failed...uhg. I wonder why.

just update to 1.21b. That removed the requirement that you play with a cd. Don't you love blizzard? :)

Of course, that means you have to get the update to work. But once you solve that, you're set.

I had that issue a few times. Need to check Dota sounds next, otherwise happy I don't need to get Windows on Bootcamp!

Did find that if you go into a single game and do a exit game through the menu it doesn't lock up unlike the main page lock up.

How do you not make it full screen mode? I do have an external 22 LCD, but put the screen to my Macbook for a better view & action.

I have the ports problem, my sound varies his volume so i just turned it off, i have to force quit my warcraft every time i finish playing because it will just freeze when i click "close" and by now I can't even minimise the game since it will crash when i do so.
Also, i use my wc3 purely for dota =D
my macbook is quite new (got it in december) and of course it features leopard, so i guess that is a intel macbook/leopard problem

sounds like we're in the same boat. I think the cause is blizzards port of war3 to a universal binary. These problems never existed prior to patch 1.21 (which brought native support to intel macs).

Hey all, I have an imac and was extremely frustrated when playing dota i could not hear my "first blood" noises etc. Thankfully, after talking to one of the blizz people and friends, we've narrowed it down that any HOST using windows vista in custom games will cause your game to give the "another application is using a needed game port" and perhaps make your screen say "waiting for host" randomly. The only solution that blizz has is to ask the host if they are vista users and if they are just leave the game. As for WC3 crashing at main menu after bnet sessions, I have the exact same problem and blizz can only identify this as perhaps a fault in the 1.21b patch specific to custom games only it seems. I will most likely not view this thread again but I hope this helps your problems.

Also I just remember, if you want to get the blizz people to do something about this, merely email rbarris@blizzard.com and cite "another application is using a needed game port" or something to that effect because they told me that it wasn't a largely reported problem so they could not look into it as in depth unless more people complained of it. The rbarris@blizzard.com is the head of mac support for WC3 so he knows what he's talking about. Good luck.

well, I realize you may not be back to this thread, but I'm confused. You say you were frustrated about the sound problems, but your investigation/"solution" seems to pertain only to the "port in use" and "waiting for host" problems. Does that mean you have no solution for the sound problems?

QCassidy, I have not found a solution to the sound problems however the blizz people said that Icefrog has mp3 files that play those sounds since they are from "unreal tournament" so the new update suppresses these sounds, when you're listening to the loading music on the screen where it says Dota Allstars you may hear that the sound stops for a second and that is the files being suppressed from opening. Turning off firewall also solved my port problems as the guy below you said so sorry but you'll have to live without "first blood" until someone smarter figures it out. I'm basically a noob at computer programming all this info is from about 3 weeks of research and a healthy addiction to Dota. :)

I did that a long time ago. Doesn't help.

And to the people saying it's a Vista thing about the game port problem, definitely not the case. It's always after about 30 minutes of having the game open that it starts doing this. Before then I NEVER have game port issues. And after this amount of time is generally when I have to force quite as well.

ZenErik, it appears to be a vista thing as to the fact that blizz has agreed on it too but it might really be not i guess. This is just a coincidence that they and i have found, I am problem free when I don't play with vista hosts so maybe it's just my comp. As for the firewall, i don't know what to say because it worked for me too. Good luck.

Would like to have some help with a problem installing Warcraft 3: TFT.

Firstly some specs on my Macbook.
Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.1Ghz, latest version of Leopard and installed whatever updates from the apple software update, 4GB of ram.

Now to the problem, I can't install TFT, when it reach to the splash screen of TFT, it just hang there, you can't even see the words you usually see on the splash screen, like "Install Game", "Readme", "Exit".

I tried reinstalling, or delete preference files, but none help.
No problem installing ROC though.

Hope someone could help with this, greatly appreciated! :)

Zenerik I'm a little confused when you said random games. Do you mean any custom games or official Bnet game? Well, I'm afraid I have no help on the port problems since my own are solved now. I wonder if it could possibly be something in your firewall that is limiting part of WC3? I really have no idea on firewalls, this is just merely a shot in the dark that possibly the firewall is not allowing a part of WC3 to interface with the host causing your port problems. Also, I would try fowarding my ports to your router because that was a problem that I had. Good luck.

My firewall is off for WCIII specifically. And I do have my ports forwarded. I mean in official BNet games. Still a port error after I play a few games. Seems to be a conflict with Leopard 10.5.2 and the newest WCIII patch. There may be conflicts with Leopard and Vista in regards to WCIII as well, but that's not what I'm noticing.

Oh yeah ZenErik i completely agree with you that it is a blizzard patch problem they even told me so and said they were working on a 1.22 patch but for now it seems as usual Mac users are thought of after the fact rather than before it. Bnet problems? Very weird and ports fowarded along with firewall of for WC3 specifically, i'm going to say it's definetly something blizz should really look into with their "universal binary patch" that solves everything. I'd email them and maybe with enough complaints they might come out with the new patch faster.

Hi I'm new to the forum and I don't actually know anything about computers. My Macbook is crashing in the middle of Warcraft III and Zoo Tycoon 2. The Macbook uses leopard and it is the base one ($1099). When people say it is a patch problem, that means there isn't a way to fix this, right? It is very frustrating. What should I look for when buying games in the future? I thought I just had to go to the Mac section.

Has anyone purchased this game via download from the Blizzard website?

I lost my WC3 disc, but still have the expansion pack. If I download the original game for $20, I should be able to install my expansion from the CD and be good to go.

Is there a legal patch that would allow me to install all the files and play with no CD?

My concern is this thread - if there are performance problems and I downloaded my copy of the game, I can't really uninstall it and try again - can I?
