iPhoto '08 crashes when importing Aperture backup

I have an aperture library that is about 17000 images deep, and when I try to import it (without copying) into iphoto '08, it does all images and at the very end crashes. I have enough disk space...so I'm not sure what it's doing.

What is the best way to move from Aperture to iPhoto?
