I'm not buying a new PB, but I'll be encouraging a friend of mine to take the plunge on a 12". I told her to hold out for Paris, so I'm glad Steve came through with something.

I'm doing the exact same thing. One of my buddies asked me to recommend a notebook. I told him to ask me again this week.

Unfortunately for me, funds are at a bit of a low. Maybe I'll be in the market for a new notebook early next year.

I was going to get a ibook900 but now the 12"PBs are slightly cheaper, slightly faster and better graphics card!

New announcements often just make things more confusing for me.

I just ordered the 15" 1.25Ghz, I waited and waited like every one else but i do need a PB now, Apple say 4/6 days on the order.

Just have to sell it next year and get a G5 PB when they come out:)

I just bought a 12" PB in early August, and I'm very happy with it. The update to the 12" wasn't so dramatic as to give me buyer's remorse.

My little friend has been put to very good use in the last 1 1/2 months. The only thing I wish were better is faster rendering (or whatever you call it) in iMovie and iDVD. But that's only 5 percent of my work on the machine.

I shan't be updating till G5 powerbooks arrive. I figure I'll need to replace my G3 by then.

I voted 'yes: 15"', but I wanted a 'yes: when Panther is included' option. I can happily wait till November (or even December) to jump from my iBook and don't particularly fancy paying for Pather as well.

Nope, I'm happy enough with my 1GHz Ti... I wouldn't get the performance increase to warranty such a short term buy!!

I'm waiting for the G5.... ;)

Agreed. I'm not updating until PowerBooks have a G5, and maybe not until the second or third revision of that. I ooh and aah over the new features, but the cold fact is that I don't really need any of them. When it gets to the point that my current TiBook can't do what I need it to because technology has passed it by, then I'll think about a new PowerBook (by which time, as Tazo says, they'll probably have G7's with retracting foldable 32" displays and AirPort Ultra).

In the words of Low End Mac: It ain't obsolete until I say it is. :)

Forget ordering online and waiting a week or three for it to arrive... I'm driving 150 miles and across an international border to the nearest Apple Store today so I can have a 15" Alubook in my hands tonight. :D

I hope it takes Apple three years or so to open up an Apple Store in my state so that I can be the first computer purchase there.

I voted not sure. My wife definitely wants a new PowerBook, the 15" would just fit her needs. Her original thought was to wait until next July to see if any specials are available.

If she has a use for it, then tell her go ahead. I voted no because my current iMac is sufficient for my needs. The next big jump will be to G5's and who knows how long that will take, otherwise it will be just incremental improvements until that happens.

Ditto here. The G5's might warrent the upgrade, but the 1Ghz TiBook is plenty fast for what I do...

No, due to lack of funding.

And if I did have the money, it would most likely go towards a DP G5 (tower). :)

hah, this is pretty funny. Everyone complaining about how they haven't come out, and when are they coming out, and 40% of the people aren't going to buy one.

yes!! i've been waiting for this since WWDC!! finally it's Mac for me again!!!:D

i'm happy with all the specs... i wasn't really convinced that the G5's would make it into the PB's. the 7457 should be awesome though. only thing i'm not too happy about is saying, 'yes, i'll have the 1.1" thin 15" PowerBook please.' but Apple did what they had to, and now there's going to be lots of happy and relieved people. :D

Apple took too long and I lost interest... if they upgraded the screens I would have bought one though. I give them props for putting the Radeon 9600 in it though. Funny thing is right after they announced the new PBs, I shrugged and placed an order for a 1.8 GHz G5. Cheaper, and faster... and no dead pixels :)

nope, if they offered a better deal, i would. 1 Ghz on the new powerbook? are you kidding me? couldn't they at least used the 1.42 Ghz on the top end or are they reserving that for next year's update?

Do you have the same concern with dead pixels for a 20 or 23" Cinema Display? My thought is that if dead pixels occur Apple Care would take care of that problem, either fix or replace!

I've been waiting for a new 12" for months, and I'm very happy with today's revision.

To think, now I can surf the forums from my desk and my easy chair... :p

If they'd released a tablet today, I'd bite.

Right now I'm perfectly happy with my busted-up 15" 800Mhz G4. My next Mac will be an iBook.

Wow! Look how many people are planning to buy a 15" PowerBook now. The 12" was previously the best selling PowerBook, but I guess the 15" one is now because everyone delayed the purchase of the 15" until this update.

My Chief Financial Officer (Wife) has officially withdrawn approval for the purchase of a new 17" powerbook...

.. She was almost convinced, but the delays gave her too much time to consider the purchase...

Apparently "Because It's so SHINY" doesn't cut it as a good enough reason. :(

She has said that she'd reconsider come January - keeping my false hopes bolstered until then, then push back the permission time until July...

... At least I can live in false hope of buying a G5 pb until January...

Im currently a PC user, i am ready for the switch, i've been ready for a while. I am purchasing a 17in powerbook, I've been waiting in hopes of a g5 powerbook, though i just noticed they they just released a whole new line of g4's. So, my question is should i even bother waiting or just go ahead and buy one of these new g4's because the g5 powerbook is long away from comming out. If i'm asking a stupid question im sorry im new to the mac world ;)

I think the answer depends on how soon you need a notebook computer and how long you plan on keeping it. If you need a notebook right now or in the near future, get it. People who bought previous G4 models seem content. It's a good computer. If you are in no immediate rush to buy one, you might want to wait for the G5. However, nobody knows when they'll be available.

Here's my situation: I have an iMac now and a very old notebook (more like encyclopedia in terms of thickness and weight, though) PC. I'd like a new one but I can't afford it and I don't absolutely need one right away. In addition, I'll probably keep my next notebook for 5 years or more. I'm going to wait for a G5. That might be 6 months from now but more likely a year.

Does that make any sense?

Squire

edit: Either way, you'll be happy you switched. There's no comparison when it comes to ease of use, in my opinion. And, no, it's not a stupid question. If you're ready to buy a computer now, I suggest you do so. The Apple waiting game, just from my observations of comments on these forums, seems like torture. ;)

i also noticed that the 12 inch powerbook is now at 1 ghz and the 17 inch powerbook is at 1.33 ghz...i don't know if this happened when the 15 inch powerbook was totally revamped

now that the 12 inch powerbook is at 1 ghz for 1599, that makes this smallest of powerbooks even more attractive for your friend...and finally, apple does not have any pro level machines under 1 ghz

It sure does feel like tourture, it kinda just feels like that keep everything hush hush until the day it comes out. There is a mac store in a nearby mall from where i live and i harass the employee's to tell me when the g5 pb is comming out everytime i go there,, lol and they swear up and down that they don't know anything and they only know what we know. Basically i thiink that mac isn't gonna release it any time soon because then noone would buy the old ones and that would be a lose for them, but sinse they just came out with new g4 that lead me to believe the wait shall be even longer then i thought. I just don't wanna buy the g4 and 2 months later the g5 comes out, then i'll be pissed. Is there really going to be that much of a proformance difference between the g4 and g5 in the powerbook??

There's a 15" 1.25Ghz with superdrive with my name on it either in a fedex truck, or apple's warehouse, or something.. I ordered it through my school, so I dont know when it will come :( I want it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i sure hope the G5 powerbook doesn't come out in 60 days...that would be terrible for those who buy any G4 powerbooks now

since the dual G5 desktop is not shipping yet makes me believe apple will focus on those machines and filling the big back order before they get into using the chip for notebooks

my guess is that we will not see a G5 powerbook anytime before 6 months

the time is ripe for me getting a 15" pb. i already have dual G4 that would like a sister to rendezvous with. my pc laptop, which i use primarily for network gaming is a bit behind the times (a dell from 2001, a 1ghz pentium III with Geforce 2 go 32 meg graphics and 256 megs ram), and can just run warcraft 3 with bare minimum graphics settings. i'll probably get one from an apple store rather than online... i don't want to get screwed waiting for them to ship it.
