Unless its IMAP and you delete them from the server via your PC and re-sync you'll have to do it manually i'm afraid. Part of the limitations of the iPhone....all in the name of simplicity

It downloads whatever is in the server. 1400 emails in your case apparently. Time for some spring cleaning

EDIT: the maximum amount should be 200 how you got 1400 in your phone is beyond me. Unless you have multiple Gmail accounts

Damn it!!

I am trying to delete 300 emails from the server and the server won't let me delete them. Every time I delete them from the iPhone it just downloads more.
Grrr, only problem so far.

Dont set up gmail the way iPhone wants you to.. use this guide and then set to view "25 newest" or something like that in mail settings on iPhone after:

hope this helps?

had the same problem when using POP gmail. First, erase your gmail account by going to settings-Mail-and clicking on your account at the top-scroll down and click "delete account." Next add a new account and type in all the correct settings for your account. When you are done it will start pulling in all 1400 of your emails again this time while it is pulling them in go back to settings-mail-click the mail account you just set up-click advanced-scroll all the way down and turn off "Use Recent Mode." If you do it quick enough it will only pull in about 15-20 of your emails instead of 1400.

-or-

The easiest was is to just enable IMAP in Gmail and set up gmail on your iphone using IMAP instead of POP. It keeps an update record of what you do everywhere you have your gmail account set up so no more pulling in old mail.
