Hi there,
I'm thinking of buying an AppleTv to stream my movies from my mac to the TV but I'm still unsure what I'll be able to play. I currently have to convert and burn my files onto dvd before playing them and this is time consuming and frankly- a pain in the arse sometimes!

Would AppleTv solve all my problems? Will it play all the movies If they will play in iTunes?

All my films play in Quicklime but I have plug-ins installed, if they actually play in Itunes, will they play on my TV too?

I don't wanna buy something that will be basically useless for me.

Thanks for any advice.

Paul.

The :apple:TV only plays certain file types: H.265 and MPEG-4, and then only if they're within certain resolution and bitrate limits. See the specifications on this page: http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html Any of your files that meet these specs will play fine on the :apple:TV, but the others won't. Good news is you can easily convert the files to the necessary format using applications such as VisualHub, iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free), and others.

I agree with the Sandman's reply. I think it's important the note that although it only supports H.264, H.264 is simply the best compression format around. I've been using Hand Brake & Visual Hub to rip my DVDs to my Apple TV and the quality of hand Brake in particular, it nothing short of brilliant.

Hey thanks, I will get a copy of Visual hub and i'm sure any unplayable films can be converted, so thanks, on another note...

I know I'm changing the subject, will the apple TV connect to a 'normal' (non HD) widescreen Tele? I know there is a HD output, but is there a converter/adapter available.

Thanks for your help chaps!

Just did a Google and there's a few solutions:
