clean off the desktop

so, i was wondering if there was any way that you can virtually have nothing on your desktop besides the menu bar at the top and the dock at the bottom. i have everything cleared off except for 'Macintosh HD', is there any way to take that off of my desktop?

If you're in Finder, go to Preferences>General>Show these items on the desktop
