View Full Version : Apple needs to stop being so terrifying.

Seriously, almost everything about my MacBook scared the bijesus out of me. The SuperDrive sounds like some awful monster from another dimension whenever I put anything in it. The start-up sound always makes me jump. When I updated the firmware, it made a sound akin to air raid sirens. And "kernel panic" is the scariest name imaginable for an error.

So there.

I almost wet myself when doing the firmware upgrade on my MBP yesterday... they said hold down the power button until you hear a long tone, but it was loud. :o

Restarting the Macs in the office always gets other colleagues asking 'what the hell is that?'

When you put them all down in one post and think about all of them at once I totally know what you mean.

I once did a firmware update late at night and it freaked the **** out of me.

I had to do some firmware updates on some new Mac Pros we were installing in the school's digital design class. During the update the CD Drive opened unexpectedly, and then the fans kicked on to supernova levels for a few seconds. Sounded like it was rebuilding itself

I'm glad at least everyone agrees that the Firmware Update sound is incredibly ominous. I swear it sounds like the computer is conveying the message, "YOU'VE IRREPARABLY WRECKED EVERYTHING."

Warning sounds should be kittens meowing and Kernel Panic should be changed to Puppy Play.

I'm glad someone gets what I'm talking about here.

This is one of the funniest threads I've read lately..... but of course I can relate to exactly what you mean! LOL .... especially the sound from the firmware updates...

first time i did a firmware update was at about 3am...

sounded like my mac was angry with me and was gonna eat me

they should change the sound to something rewarding and relaxing, not a sound like it's burping chainsaws

LOL! I know exactly what you mean - although lately my colleagues generally just say 'shaddap!' :D

I can't agree with you enough. I must also add, that the first time my G5 KP'd I thought the world had ended! The monitor was the only source of light in the room, and to see it slowly drop vertically - well, it was nearly time to get a new pair of boxers!

Especially since in the PC world, that usually DOES mean you destroyed everything. I remember hearing a similar sound back in the 486 days when I installed a CPU with the wrong voltage. Computers aren't very happy if you try to start them up sans cpu(offtopic but anyone ever try to do that with a mac with a removable CPU? What does it do?)

lol, it's fun.

Can't beat a good scare.

Infact, The Macintosh is officially the best cure for hiccups. ;)

If you want to get that fear back then there is the kernel panic screensaver (http://www.doomlaser.com/?p=12). It is pretty scary as it cuts off any music you have playing just like a real panic. It makes for a great prank BTW.

I'll never forget my reaction the first time the cooling fan came on in my iMac. I seriously thought a fighter jet had just flown over my house and was takin aim at me.

Hehe, I know what you mean. If I'm on the phone and turn on my Mac they always ask what that is.

That's hilarious.

Blue screen of Death is a lot scarier sounding than Kernel Panic.

It's true, "panic" leaves the impression of hope that you can get through it (even though your mac did just "die").

I don't think so. Blue Screen of Death sounds like an obvious joke. Kernel Panic is just stressful-sounding.
