Very interesting! Did you try it yourself?

(I only ask because this would be a great way to deliver malicious code to an iPod Touch.)

no, i did not try it myself as I already have the iphone apps installed.
However in the forums i found this in, it had a great success rate, and it also has the 1.1.2 apps according to some of the posters.

As always try at your own risk, but worse case scenario, just restore the ipod. ;)

all the 1.1.2 apps show up after adding repo.us.to to the sources. i haven't upgraded to 1.1.2 yet so i can't try.

can somebody confirm that with my jailbroken 1.1.1, my steps are to install the oktoprep, upgrade to 1.1.2 thru itunes, and reinstall 1.1.2 iphone apps? do you need to reinstall all the other apps like sketch, nes, etc?

thanks

what says only to install if you have an iphone??

It probably says that to protect themselves from Apple, i.e. saying if you don't have a license to use the software, don't install it on your iPod.

install the mobile prep first.

I believe you have to do this with frameworks as well to get maps to work??

Yes! Do the mail and map prep first and then everything works fabulously! Thank you so much-this is by far the easiest way to add apps. BTW I added the 1.1.1 apps since I didn't want to do the 1.1.2. jailbreak first.

Matty...I haven't upgraded to 1.1.2 yet because I don't want to lose my iPhone apps & fixed iCal. With your method, do I need to upgrade to 1.1.2 AND jailbreak it before your method works? If so, is there a computer-less jailbreak method for 1.1.2 yet? That's how I jailbreaked initially with 1.1.1. Thanks in advance for your help.

No you don't need to upgrade to 1.1.2
Although, I am not sure why you would be doing this if you already have your iphone apps installed???

As for the jailbreak of 1.1.2 it is a pretty simple process.
I myself have not upgraded yet simply because there is no benefit to it for me. But as long as you use Oktoprep, and follow the instructions, it should really be no problem.

Just done this on a 1.1.1 ipod touch - works perfectly.

Google maps is absolutely awesome - so slick and responsive.

Gmail works perfectly, really easy to send emails

Mobile notes is far better than the 3rd party notepad apps ive download already

Weather works great - just a shame the icon on the summerboard doesnt change to represent current weather etc.

All in all, a monkey could install these apps on it - its fool proof.

Just make sure you install the prep. packs first before the applications - they are all on the installer source page though.

While my own personal Touch had the iPhone apps added using iJailBreakMe, I can confirm this technique works.

... because I did it to one of the demo model Touch's at Future Shop :D

Thanks!!

From a stock iPod with 1.1.2, you need to do the following:

1. Find and download the firmware 1.1.1 restore file from the web. It's about 150 megs.
2. Restore your iPod to firmware 1.1.1 through iTunes.
3. Jailbreak your iPod. In doing so a new app called "Installer" will be added to the home menu.
4. Add the new source to the installer app and follow the instructions in the first message of this thread, to download and install the iPhone apps.
5. (If you want) You can download and run "OktoPrep", re-update your iPod to 1.1.2, and re-jailbreak.

As you can see, this thread describes step 4. The "how to" for the first steps are readily available in this forum and through Google, so just do a bit of reading and you'll find more detailed instructions.

right.......

download the 1.1.1 official firmware (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw), save it to a place you will remember.

if your touch isn't already in recovery mode as already instructed plug touch into pc/mac load itunes up and then hold down the lock/wake button and home key keep them held down eventually your touch will shut off, keep the buttons held down and when you see the apple logo let go of the lock/wake key ONLY leaving the home key pressed down and eventually you should get the itunes logo with pic of the usb wire.

iTunes should now say its detected an ipod in recovery mode click ok, now depending what system your using for windows hold the shift key down or for mac options key then press restore and point iTunes to the ipsw file and click open, iTunes should start restoring your touch to 1.1.1. When its done point the touch's safari to jailbreame.com, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on install AppSnapp and soon after safari will "crash" if you wait yout touch will start to auto jailbreak, if memory serves me once the install has complete reboot your touch and your jailbroken.

to upgrade to 1.1.2 first step, go to installer then scroll down to 1.1.1 tweaks and install oktoprep. Once installed plug ipod in to pc/mac and update to 1.1.2. When updated grab the 1.1.2 jailbreak (http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/1.1.2-jailbreak.zip) program and extract to a folder. If you are running windows then run windows.bat if mac then the osx file, tick install ssh and click the jailbreak button. When this has finised doing its thing power off your touch then turn it back on, your touch will reboot when loaded up (this is normal) when its rebooted you will then have a jailbroken 1.1.2

Wow guys, that's fantastic. Thanks...

When I download 1.1.1 and option-restore or option-update my iPod it extracts but then says something along the lines of the update failed error (5). I have tried everything, searching forums...

I am on iTunes 7.5, MacBook with Leopard. Again, any help would be great! Thanks!

A long shot, but is Safari downloading the restore file and leaving it intact? It should be a .ipsw file. When I first tried it, it downloaded and tried to helpfully extract the contents of the (zip) file into a folder. You need to make sure "Automatically open safe files after downloading" is turned off in Safari preferences.

Fantastic.

Absolutely amazing. This is the best method to get apps on to the iPod Touch in my opinion. I've had some trouble with my network and using SSH and this is instant and works perfect!

Go to "Library, iTunes, iPod Software updates" then delete the folder's contents if you can see it. If not then show hidden files on your Mac by opening terminal, and then typing:

# defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
# KillAll Finder

To stop hidden files change 'True' with 'False' on the first line.

Once you've made sure that file is empty. Plug your iPod in, and hit restore as usual. It'll wipe your iPod and then use the latest iPod software package.

After doing that, Option-click your 1.1.1 file which should be something along the lines of "iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw" - if you need it then email me as I've got a version that definitely works.

Once you've done that it should give you the steps of like Extracting iPod update, installing, cleaning up etc.

If you've got any problems then PM or PM me for my MSN address. I had some problems like this but I've got a fully cracked iPod Touch now, even with iPhone apps:

Replying to an oldish post here, but this is probably caused by mail automatically checking for new messages. Did you switch "Auto Check" to "manual" in Settings->Mail before uninstalling?
