I voted August 2004. Going to be optimistic, that Steve will give his Keynote at MW Boston. The 3GHz will be announced during his address and shipping in August of 2004!

i almost clicked september but went with october soley base on the idea that they will ship in bulk (1000's a day) to regualr consumers as opposd to the one by one shipping of the duals now. it will probably be october until we see a consistant onslaught of dual arrivals.

My thinking is that the 3ghz G5 will be announced Aug/Sept with a ship date of October that may get pushed back to Nov/Dec depending on how many Universities want to build a super computer. ;)

Um.... what happened to July?

I think Steve will announce them at the summer MacWorld (if it happens). :)

Which would mean July.... :)

Does someone at MacRumors have a vendetta against July?

Note the wording.

The question isn't "When will Apple ship the 3GHz G5" but is instead "When will apple be able to ship the 3GHz G5".

They'll be technically able to produce and ship the G5's before it actually happens. The wait will probably be a full year, maybe a bit more, just for marketing and product timing reasons.

From what I've seen of the board, heating, power, and bus specs, they're good to go now as soon as the chips are available.

I hope they ship the 3GHz after my Dual 2GHz arrives, but I'm starting to wonder...

When should Apple ship the 3GHz G5's:
Late July/Early August, but mid August for top of the line at the latest

When will Apple ship the 3GHz G5's:
September/October

Don't get your hopes up.....remember this back to school disaster (no G5's shipped, and no new powerbooks even announced!)

I wonder if we're generally "pessimistic" about not being able to follow-through on upgrades of processors because of Motorola's failures.

Granted, we're all more optimistic with IBM, but we should be (it seems, at least to this point -- they're delivering the G5s on time and have done well with the G3's, generally).

So I was "optimistic" and voted for September: announced in August.

We'll see.

I think this poll should be rephrased to:

When do you think Apple will be able to ship 2GHZ PowerMac G5s?

10/29 is still the ship date on mine >:|

Announced at WWDC in June. To be shipped in September. Actually ships in October. For those of you expecting an announcement at Boston? Apple isn't even attending at this point. And don't get your hopes up.

“Now that we’ve begun on this new architectural platform, it’s going to be amazing what we can do over the next few years. We’re not going to rest on our laurels. We’re going to keep on working, and in the future we’re going to make the Power Mac G5 even faster. We’ve committed that by next summer we’re going to be at 3GHz. That will be a 50 per cent increase within 12 months”.

Not that I believe everything Stevo says, but I'll take "by next summer" too mean before summer. So I'm going to go with a July announcement and August ship date.

I'm thinking later. Sorry, but I've been burned by thinking lofty thoughts and believing that apple can achieve them. I hope I'm proven wrong though. Just might have to buy a new mac if I am.

I really do not see how this is relevant right now. We got fast machines here today and finally there's decent roadmap for future. Main reason Apple has mentioned 3ghz by next summer is merely to assure public that there is strong Apple/IBM commitment to PPC platform and to kill off Mac/Intel speculation that could only harm platform right now.
Being few months of the delivery target is not uncommon in chip/tech business and that's nothing like Motorola being years behind now.

I'm optimistic that Steve will change his mind. Since he went to Paris that give me more hope. It would make me happy also if Apple would have a major presence. Maybe one of Steve's right hand men could speak!

I work with IBM Power4-based systems (the architecture upong which the G5 is based) on a regular basis. They're an excellent line of processors and IBM has always done an excellent job at updating this processor line. I'd expect no less from their relationship with Apple regarding the G5's.

I'm looking forward to their Power5-based processors. I've seen technology overviews on this line, as well as in-depth specs. We already have plans to implement Power5-based systems as soon as they become available. I'm excited about many of the rumors I've been hearing from the IBM world about Apple and IBM collaborating on bringing the Power5 core into the G5 lineup.
