All the iPod were sealed. With my two 4th, I have the same brown boxes with serial number and there is cellophane.

It could be that the 1st gens that sold in stores had the cellophane and the ones that shipped had no cellophane...

@MattyMac

Your 1G is still awesome!

I bet the original shipping box is very rare, since most people throw that away or bought theirs at the Apple Store.

No, doesn't have to be new! To be honest, there's probably not a new Harry Potter in the wild anywhere in the whole world! Thanks for your help.

I have a Harry Potter iPod in very good condition.

Won't be selling it though - Sorry

These are even rarer than the 1G.

I'm looking for the 2Gs that were engraved by Beck, Madonna, Tony Hawk

These are nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find...

Where did you get your 1G?

Where did you get your 1G?

eBay. There are loads on eBay from the US, and I was very tempted to get one, but I was worried the UK would screw me over with customs charges, so I waited until I saw one from the UK. One came up after about 4 months, and I got it for 70 shipped so not bad at all IMO. Your best bet to get one is eBay.

Interestingly, in about February, there was an auction from London, some chap was selling his Powerbook G4 12", and he was throwing in his 1G iPod as well. The auction ended at about 3am on a Sunday night, so obviously I was asleep, but I wish I'd stayed up, as he sold it for about 140! Normally the old Powerbooks go for about 300, and this one had a 1G iPod included! Aah well, I hope whoever won the auction realises what a steel he got.

I think the earliest I have is U2145XXXXX, and the earliest I have ever came across is week 44..

I bought another 1st gen iPod off eBay because I became afraid of taking my 1G out in public for fear I'd drop it or lose it. I only bought the unit itself with no original packing material or anything like that for this one (I truly bought it to USE) so it was only about $50. It's not in bad shape, has a chip on the headphone port but it still works just fine.

Anyway I recalled the serial number discussion earlier and this one is a U2229XXXXXX (May). Which has to make this one of the last of the 1st Gen's produced as the 2nd gen ones were released in July of 2002 I believe.

It's great to see all of these new collections popping up. We're all very diseased :)

Sorry to say this, but thats no 1st gen ipod. Your ipod was produced week 29, which equals to july, not may (approx 52 weeks in a year, right?).

Your ipod is either M8513LL/B (Mac) or M8697LL/A (Windows). Check the "about" info on your ipod, maybe it is stated.

Well he could have a 10GB iPod 1st gen. model number M8709LL/A. This would still be a first generation that was produced until July of 2002.

"A 10 GB "Scroll Wheel" (M8709LL/A) model was introduced March 21, 2002 and discontinued July 17, 2002"

siliconcowboy
Apr 16, 2010, 10:44 PM
Whoops I was using 22 not 29.

However I am quite positive it is a 1st gen body and style as I said I already have a 1st gen iPod in my collection with all original materials. The model matches my other one. It also has a physical scroll wheel, no size distinction, and the serif font that only the 1st gen has. The serial number on the back also matches the electronic one in the about screen so it's not a piece together. I am away on vacation but when I get back I will post a picture.

I seem to recall them continuing to sell the physical wheel model even after they released the new version.

I'm still collecting.
I bought a refurbished 1st Gen 5GB the other day from Australia. I know that it isn't going to be worth as much because it's refurbished but I wanted one with the iPod and box in perfect condition.
I'm also trying to get all of the 2nd Gen iPod mini's in their different colours. I currently have a Blue, Pink/Purple & a Silver which was my very first iPod and the only one i've ever bought from a shop (i think it cost about 150!!).

Yes, I'm also curious how many were in your collection and roughly how much you sold it for.

As some of you already know, there's some guy on eBay selling his collection of 12 iPods (nothing special about any of them) for $12,000. He's re-listed every time, rejecting over 20 offers. (BTW, did any offer for this specific auction?).

But all of this raises an interesting question about the value (monetary, since we all have subjective or sentimental values that differ) of such an iPod collection.

I dont have my 1st gens ipods available right now, but maybe youll find the model number if you check in the about screen in the menus? If not you can connect it to itunes, and see if modelnumber shows up.

What did klantenservice say about the ipods? I do think you have a 2nd gen ipod, either for windows, or mac (M8513LL/B (Mac)/M8697LL/A (Windows)).

Its not a knockoff, the exterior is identical to the first gen, but the mainboard looks different, and they were shipped in a different boxes then the first gen.

but that was my point..... its rare.....

people dont want to collect the most common items

was only a thought while i was admiring the thread anyway

(If I can expound for a bit on the iPhone on this iPod collector thread, esp since today is the iPhone 4G/HD launch day):

I tend to agree with sparkie1984 that the 2G iPhone 4GB is a future collectible. First to state the obvious, the 2G is the first iPhone, which arguably has had even more impact and influence on the direction of Apple and the industry than even the iPod, esp in terms of OS and Apps (Still love the iPod though; that's why I have more than 20 in my collection).

Second, the 4GB model is really rare, relative to the others. And no, it was not a "test" like the Nano 4G 4GB; the 2G iPhone 4GB was officially launched and sold (while the Nano 4G 4GB was not officially sold, at least in the U.S.). The iPhone 4GB just did not sell very well (people overwhelmingly bought the 8GB when the 2G launch back in 2007). So, Apple discontinued it in about 3 months, which means it had very little time on the market. Remember, during these first 3 months, Apple "only" sold a million iPhone 2Gs, and I estimate that only 10% of those were the 4GB model. So if the golden rule of collecting (Scarcity) apples, than the iPhone 4GB is a good contender.

Third, generally speaking, finding iPhones in unopened, factory-sealed condition is very rare, since most people had them opened and activated for service. Buying an iPod and keeping it sealed or forgetting about is possible, but conversely, keeping a phone unopened is less likely since most people have to pay two years' worth of voice/data plans. Thus, finding a factory-sealed iPhone 4GB on eBay is very rare even now, only 3 years after launch.

There hasn't been enough time for the iPhone to be considered a collectible yet, but I think in a couple of years, the 2G 4GB model will be.

The second rarest iPhone is probably the 3G White 16GB, since that was discontinued when the 3GS launched (even though Apple retained the black 3G 8GB model).

Anyways, I hope everyone enjoys the iPhone 4G/HD launch today.

I'm very excited.

I agree with what Sir iPod said. The 2G iPhone is sure to become a collectable, so we should all be thinking about picking one up in the near future. Likewise, I reckon in about 2 years we should get the current iPad for as cheap as possible, as that too, in 5 years or so, may be a sought after collectable. But as so many have been sold, it may not be as collectable as an original iPod or iPhone.

Yes, yorkshire implies an important point:

As Apple grows and becomes more mainstream, collecting Apple gear will be more difficult going forward. Success has its unintended consequences, and since every Apple product launch nets millions of units sold (i.e. iPad), it will be more difficult to land a rare collectible.

On the flip side, continuing Apple success may help the collectibility of older Apple products, since the growing base of Apple fans will grow (the number of people posting to this forum is just one small indication of this).

Anyways, for real tech heads out there, I guess there are always other companies and products to hunt down as well...

I don't collect them but my father and I have a few:
iPod 10GB second (nonmoving wheel). Does not work though, is there a way to fix it?
iPod 20gb 4th (non photo version). Everybody loves raymond logo on back, it was a gift from ray romano to my father (seriously: proof below) still works, barely. won't connect with computer, but will play what's already on it. Again, can it be fixed?
iPod video 60gb. the model my father still uses.
and my current classic 80gb.

proof: here and here
The circle of scratches is from, ironically, a case. The clip had a circle on the inside, which seriously scuffed it up.

Yeah, I saw this auction too.

But the seller doesn't realize that this is a 2nd gen iPod with the orange graphic on the box, which was released in 2002 (NOT 2001). As we all know, the original 2001 first gen was in a plain white box with "iPod" written in black.

Even though the 5GB stayed the same (with moving scroll wheel) in 2002, this is still a 1.1 or 2nd generation iPod.

Will be interesting to see how high the price goes.

I don't know the worth in total. I think it depends the persons. There are people who can paid very much for a sealed iPod. For example, I don't think that I will paid more than 300-400 dollars for a 1G sealed. All my sealed iPod where good opportunity's (iPod HP sealed = 120$, iPod 3G sealed = 150$, iPod 4G sealed = 110$). I remember to have seen an iPod 3G sealed as mine sold 850$!!!

But, I think that I will make a break in the collection. Because I have to buy a new motorbike!:D

Technically, it's not even a true first generation. Hopefully, the buyer knows that.

If this auction is any indication, a real first gen sealed in box should fetch several thousands!

Speaking of which, a collector is selling most of his collection over on eBay:

I wanted this Volkswagen special edition 3rd gen, but it sold already

Yep, 1100 is a sizeable amount. If I had a boxed 1G though, I'd still hold on to it as that value is only going to go up and up.

I won't sell mine until I get between 5 an 7k. Honestly I really think it will happen one day. It is a TRUE new 1G.

Oh my, this just ended for over $1,700!

Technically, it's not even a true first generation. Hopefully, the buyer knows that.

As many of you probably are, I too am an iPod collector. It's hard to explain the feeling of getting a new iPod, eventhough you know there's no need for it:rolleyes:

...my iPhone is pretty much the only thing that gets use nowadays, but I still find myself trying to find a way to get the next one :D

Here's a thread to that you can creatively show your precious collection. I for one have my collection displayed as such...

3/21/08 EDIT: Some of you expressed interest in the stands my iPods are displayed on. I have some of these for sale if you see this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=446018

3/22/08 EDIT: I've added a pic of my collection up to date and removed the previous picture.

Great collection of iPods. Just shows how iconic they have become and seemingly wiped away the competition. Nice photos.

To be honest I don't think it'll be too long until it's worth 5k. If I was you I would just keep it until you are a lot older.

This is my entire collection. I posted here quite a while a go (I think it was about a year a go) in a picture gallery section in this forum. Under the thread Show your iPod RIG. My collection are growing larger and larger. This is my latest update.

The ones that I have outside the box doesn't have the box anymore. Or, maybe I accidentally damaged the box and threw it somewhere else. But, the ones that are boxed still has the iPod inside. I opened up the box to charge them once every 2 weeks so the original battery remains intact and holds charge.

I have a lot iPods sealed in box as I like to collect them very much. The most favorite iPod in my collection is the 3rd generation iPod with lights on the buttons. I am still using the 3rd generation 40GB model as my main iPod.

Also, not pictured are my 1st generation iPod that I bought in Cupertino back in December 2001. I have 2 sealed. My wife is using them for a presentation in Singapore so she bring those iPods along with her.

Any questions please just comment. I love to see other collectors here that are really enthusiasts about iPod. Share your thoughts!

Sorry for the poor iPhone 4 quality. Let me know if you guys want to see more pictures.

How do you like my collection Psykomaniaque?

Yes. I do. This is just my side hobby. I got all these from connections and mostly eBay from 2001. So, you know my history.

Honestly, I never got a chance to count all my iPod, because I sometimes gave my cousins my used ones. They need it more than I do. Then overtime I got a new one. So the numbers stop.

BTW, someone in this thread said that he missed the eBay auction for a Volkswagen iPod. I am the guy that bought it lol. Sorry cant resist myself.

Thanks for all your comments.

If you look at Psykomaniaque's collection above, can anybody tell me why the 3G Shuffles come in two different sized boxes? Is it because the ones spaced centrally are 2GB and the one's offset to the left in a smaller box are 4GB?

The ones that offset to the left are from the 1st batch of the 3rd gen Shuffle. Then, Apple rolled newer batches with colors on em. So they redesigned the packaging.

So far I have:
-1st Gen Ipod Classic 10GB (no box/accessories) - With "don't steal plastic still on it
-2nd Gen Ipod Classic 10GB very good condition with original box/accessories/cds/etc
-1st Gen iPhone 8GB Sealed

-Original iPod 5gb Brochure (really cool..possibly rare??)

Just started and would appreciate comments.
I am indecisive about how I should continue my collection too.

Should I only look to buy sealed boxes OR should I get used (good condition) with the original box?

Honestly I am not looking to make money. Just want a cool collection in my office someday. haha:cool:...What are you guys thoughts. Like I said, I am INDECISIVE and could used everyone's opinions.

I kick myself every time I see one of these. I bought one three years ago for $80, and stupidly traded it for a PowerBook the next year. Like yours, it was a sealed M8513LL/A. I don't have the PB, and I'm stuck with regret letting it go.

However, I bought a 2G 10GB a couple days ago, to restart that warm feeling.

Hey scott. Welcome to the club. It seems you are taking my place in the apple collector world. Im no longer a collector because I'm married, own a house now, and simply can't afford it :/

But anyhow it seems there are three forms of collecting and you can go either route ...based on $$$ of course.

Most expensive - all sealed iPods

Middle road - iPods aren't sealed but you have original boxes for all (do not want any refurbished iPods)

Least expensive - iPods with no boxes. You simply want to display the evolution of the iPod
without the need to display the evolution of packaging or included accessories. You wouldn't care if some were refurbs.

I tried to stay in the middle road with a few iPods that were sealed.

Hope that helped!

Wow! Thats an amazing looking collection. You must have worked hard to get them all.
The older cardboard boxes are so much more interesting than the new plastic ones. Although the plastic ones look nice they just don't have the same charm as the different coloured older ones.
The only one that is a bit of a let down is the black and white 3G box.

Just for collection, or waiting for 20 years then selling?

I personally am just starting but beginning to realize I prefer the "mint condition/open box" ipods with all the original accessories included. As of right now there are brand new original iphones without a box, accessories, etc selling for $***. And the guy has sold about 30 of them!!!!

So even now I could sell it for more than I payed, and not to a collector but to a user.

people were saying overtime the lithium battery will leak and probably ruin most of the stuff inside. Is that true?

As of now, I'm simply collecting as many as I can. My goal is to have one of every iPod classic (1st to 5th gen) in unopened/sealed condition. I figured that kind of collection doesn't exist so I started collecting to reach that goal. So if anyone on this thread is willing to help me out by selling one of their iPods that I don't have, that would be great. I'm looking for any 1st gens, 2nd gens, 10gb & 30gb 3rd gen, 60gb HP photo 4th gen, 60gb color 4th gen, 80gb white 5.5 gen, and any Harry Potter models. If anyone is interested, send me a PM.

Hey ijhaddish. Is your first gen iPod still brand new? I know you were looking for one a while ago. I would be willing to sell mine(just need to get the right price). I think you expressed interest a while back. It's brand new all accessories and iPod sealed with original shipping box. Also an early serial number. Only thing is no cellophane around the original box. I'd be scared to buy one with cellophane on it for obvious reasons!

It's pointless to collect anything besides the 1st generation in a series (well unless you are collecting them as a hobby and not for profit)

Look at comic books

you guys sound exactly like the kids I knew grewing up thinking that any sealed comic book was a good investment.

In 20 years, no one is going to give a crap about the 3rd generation ipod shuffle

Much like no one gives a crap about Spiderman #208

Even if its rare, it needs to have nostalgia/primacy to be worth something

Just a heads up from someone with an Uncle who owns/sells collectibles

Just a friendly reminder to fellow collectors that if you have a pic of your iPod complete/new in box, please watermark it.

(or any Apple Collectible for that matter)

It has been known that eBay scammers will download the pic to use on their fake auctions.

Here's my collection of sealed iPods. Only the 1st and 2nd gen are opened. Everything else is still sealed in its original box with plastic wrap or seal.

P.S. Looking for 4th gen color/photo 60gb. The one with the black box w/o "photo" written on it.

I decided over the last few days to start collecting some old iPods so I searched through ebay and snatched a few good ones at great prices. I will add a pic when they all come in and I will add them in with my current iPods.

What I bought:

-1st Gen Nano 4GB White in excellent condition with new LCD for $42.50
-2nd Gen Nano 4GB in Red in good condition (couple of scratches/scuffs) for $36.34
-3rd Gen Classic 15GB in good/fair condition for $36
-2nd Gen Mini 4GB in Green mint condition with new battery for $33
Plus an Apple Firewire power brick plus cable for $12 off amazon in like new condition

Can't wait to get these in. All I want now is a 5th Gen iPod Video.

EDIT: Just bought a 30gig 5.5G in white for $89 off Amazon in very good condition. I really wanted a black but all the black ones on ebay were in iffy condition and were going for just as much anyway. The black 5.5G was my very first ipod I owned but I lost it 2 years ago and really wanted to get another one again.

Here's my current iPod collection :)

The silver nano was my first iPod. Oh the memories :) The black 30GB was my Dad's, but then he got an iPod Touch so he gave it to me (it currently does not hold a charge). The blue nano isn't exactly mine yet, it's my sister's and she never uses it so I conveniently took it for the picture. :p

I took the picture with an iPhone 3GS so I guess that counts as part of the collection also :)

I still have the original iPod shuffle (stick of gum) and it works fine. But it just sits in a drawer, most probably never to be used again.

My only other iPod is the "fatty" iPod Nano. It is my "workhorse" music player.

My "dream iPod" would simply be the iPod Nano 5G (camera, play videos, elegant form, clickwheel, etc.) with 32G of storage. I was horrified when the 6G Nano came out.... Apple marketeers have gutted the Nano in order to eliminate competition with the "Touch". The Nano was simply "too good" for its place in the Nano family.

So I'll just stick with my fatty until it stops working. Maybe by then we'll simply wear a "cloud helmet" that allows you to listen to your selected list of songs "from the cloud" directly into the brain.....

Just a friendly reminder to fellow collectors that if you have a pic of your iPod complete/new in box, please watermark it.

(or any Apple Collectible for that matter)

It has been known that eBay scammers will download the pic to use on their fake auctions.

Thanks...

Thank-you.i think i came across some ebayers that did that.

----------

Let me know if you guys want to see more pictures.

so if you want to sell any of them what would they be.my collection is growing but yours totally owns mines big time.i only have around 20ish ipods.

This is all my collection as of October 2010. I've been collecting all these for the past 7 years and I absolutely love what I do. Most of these came were purchased online either eBay or Apple resellers. Some of them purchased locally. I've added some iPods right up until now but I haven't got time to put everything up together like this since October 2010. Not pictured is my 5Gb 1st generation iPod as it was stored in my super-sealed compartment under my bed :D. Too lazy to open up and photographed it.

Oh and btw, happy 10th anniversary iPod. Long live music!!

EDIT: Sorry I didn't realize that I posted this already awhile back, exactly 1 year ago in this thread. Sorry again for the repost. I just want to say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY IPOD!

How do you decide which models or colors to collect? Am I too late to start? Where do I begin??

I can remember someone posted on this thread a while back. It is not the colors that important. It is whether the iPod is sealed or not thats important.

If you can get yourself a brand new previous generations iPod that is sealed in factory boxes, then this is highly collectable.

The middle line is an iPod that has not been used at all but no box. Like for example the 2nd generation nano that sold in Apple original plastic wraps. Not in box. This has less value but still considerable to collect.

The least valued iPod would be the one you get used. Enough said.

It is always better to be late than never. Although sealed iPods are getting hard to come by, but patience is all you need. Check eBay frequently for sealed iPods that might put up for sale. They might be a bit pricey, but I think its worth it for a fanboy like us here.

Start from the most rare ipods first cause they will continue to go up in value.if you don't have enough cash start with the shuffles then the nano's then the touches and classics.

My new iPod I got off ebay for $20. It still works. It is a second gen 20gb model. Doesn't even have the 30 pin connector, just firewire. My new MacBook Air 2011 can't even run it (lack of firewire). So I have to pull out my White MackBook 2007 to sync it lol..... I even got the original box and all the accessories except the firewire cable (which was easy enough to pick one up). I am looking to get one iPod for every generation and line one day. This is a great start.

I'm loving the iPod collections!

Some general advice when collecting. If possible it's good to collect items in sets of three. So for each iPod you are collecting you should really have 3 copies of the exact same one (same model/condition/color where possible). One to collect, one to trade/sell, and one for your own use that you don't care about if it gets scratched etc.

Since you really only need one or two iPods for personal use, you could probably get away with collecting in sets of two. So for each iPod in your collection you need one for your own collection and one (exact model/conditon/color if possible) to trade/sell later.

This philosophy may seem like overkill, but believe me someday your collection could be worth a lot of money but you won't feel like selling it for sentimental/emotional reasons. Having the duplicate collection solves that problem by having one set to sell/trade. This happened to me with a comic book collection. Today it is worth way more than I paid for it, but I just can't part with it. I wish I had the "backup" collection to sell.

Thank You
Ricky

try and go for the nano's first.manly the 5th gen cause people are pricing them too high now but you can find one really cheap.i found one for $50 but offered him $65.00.i see many go up to $399 or even more.so for the 5th gen ano cause that is the best nano ever.

Given your impressive collection, I believe you are indeed a serious buyer.

The $1,400 you proposed is only for a 1G with the box opened and only the iPod itself sealed, right? Technically, I do not consider that a "sealed" iPod. Factory sealed means that the entire box must be sealed, exactly how one would find it at the retail store shelf - brand new, untouched...

Now, I wonder how much would you pay for a completely sealed 1G (if you could find one)? Your price quote above reminds of the saying that collectibles are only worth what the next collector is willing to pay.

I don't know how many truly factory-sealed 1Gs there are in the world, but I suspect that one would be worth several thousand dollars...No?

Let's hear what everyone thinks: How Much Is a Factory Sealed 1G worth?

re your u2 20gb ipod, what value do you think it is worth now as i have a factory sealed one for sale ?mark

I love seeing all these great collections! I have a small ipod collection myself, I actually just collect mp3 players in general, but iPod would be the biggest single brand that I have.

My ipods include:
three 5th gen ipod classics (all 30gb and black)
one 4th gen ipod touch (black)
one 4th gen ipod nano (orange)
one 2nd gen ipod shuffle (purple)
one 1st gen ipod nano (black, currently at Apple for the recall)
one iphone 4s (two if you count my hubby's)
One ipad, 32gb...hey it plays mp3's! :P (two if you count hubby's)

My other mp3 players include brands like iriver, sony, sandisk and rilos. Never owned a Zune! Ha!

My collection is quite a hodge podge and none of them are in immaculate condition. I collect my ipods (mp3 players) like I collect books, well used. I scour craigslist and just look for used ones to "rescue". LOL (except my touch)

If I get a chance I'll take a pic, but my collection isn't all shiny and pretty like the other ones posted in this thread! :D
