Just got this today, I know its not an iPod but definitely worthy of any decent collection!

Brand new iPhone 1st Generation 8GB! Had a quick look on eBay etc and can't find any of these for sale in the UK?

As far as I know its not worth that much at the moment, but in a few years, who knows?

Oh, nice! Its about to become a classic like the first iPod! Do you have the box and everything? Do NOT open and use it... ;)

I do indeed have the box and all its accessories, however the serial number on the iPhone does not match the one on the box as the iPhone was replaced by Apple. Does anyone here have sealed box 1st Gen iPhones?

New additions to my collection.
After opening my Slate 32GB Touch 5th Gen, it couldn't be added to my sealed collection. So now I've got a blue 32GB Touch 5G sealed which does qualify!!!
I also have a new addition coming in the post. Just bought it off eBay last night, but not going say what it is. Up to you guys to guess ;)...

So exciting :)

I think every apple fan should own a 1G.

I don't have a 1st gen iPod... tho I wish I did. But here is the semi-official video of Apple releasing their very first iPod.

NO ONE is allowed to call themselves a true iPod fan unless they have seen THIS (above) video.

Well no, but close. It's an iPad 1st Gen BNIB (Sealed) - This was the first tablet produced that really revolutionised the tablet industry. It will be a piece of history in its own time.
Thought I'd get one now while there'd be a few and not a ridiculous prices...

It's semi-official because Apple did NOT post it to YouTube (therefore it could possibly be edited or even tampered with). Thus I only called it "semi-official" at best.

But otherwise, you are correct, it seems that the YouTube video I linked appears to be the original Apple press video which introduced the very first iPod to the world.

I used to have a 20GB first or second generation iPod (not sure). It was white, monochrome screen and the click wheel was different to what we see today (had pressable buttons at each point of the wheel).

This one:

I got it for a great bargain. I've seen them priced on eBay with ridiculous Buy It Now prices but I got mine for a fraction.

I know what an avid collector you are, especially after I've seen your YouTube videos and your pictures on here.

I'm willing to let you have it to complete your mini collection but obviously there's a price to pay. And by that I mean another iPod I'd want in return... :)

Won the ipad 1 for $358.00AUD.There were like 8-7 bidders biding on it.

and yer i know, everything you bid on there is gonna be at least someone that will bid on it as well.Where do all these people come from.Is it collectors, people that resell things for profit or normal people who would open a sealed rare ipod to use.

There seems to be not much ipod collectors how there anymore.

And goodluck for your exam, can't wait to see your beautyful collection as well.

It's only worth what people are willing to pay for it.
Some would say its worth up to £500 and others would say more.
Your best bet is to stick it on ebay at either a price you'll be happy with, but obviously a price that somebody would pay. Alternatively, you could list it at £0.99 and let it fetch its own market price.
You have to keep your prices real in order to actually get people to buy it.

I don't have any sealed. They aren't an investment or anything - I love to appreciate the design and have a good grope every now and then - if that doesn't sound too wired. I do love the packaging too though and try to buy things with the boxes so I can appreciate the whole product.

Here they are (missing the 4G shuffle) which is in a gym bag somewhere.

Have been pretty lucky - first iPod Mini was sold as spares but just needed a good charge, sold it then bought a mint one. 4th gen classic just needed a bang on the table to jump the hard drive back in action. 3rd gen classic just needed an update, restore and charge and now working fine. Polished out a few polycarbonate and stainless steel scratches with some car polish and boom, done.

It's surprising that the 1st gen touch cost more then a 32gb 5th gen touch:)

Only collectors will buy the 1st gen touch since if you are buying it to use you would rather get the 5th gen with a larger screen, camera's,better battery, volume rockers, mic and 10 times faster i think.Things has gone along way from 2007 to now.

I reckon the 5th gen is the best ipod touch ever made so far but for packaging i still have to award the 1st gen.If only packaging stayed that way.

I'm not so sure the iPod Touch is worth that much to 99.99% of people, but to someone it may complete their collection, would be a real shame if someone were to buy it to use, hence the price

I need that ipod touch 1st gen with that artist on the box(forgot her name).
I got the 1st gen touch sealed with lenon on the box i think his name was and i will need the third artist as well so i currenlty got 1 out of 2 1st gen touch's.

For $399 and that touch isn't the 16gb model it doesn't seem worth it as the 5th gen touch cost even less and also the 1st gen ipad and i once saw a 3rd gen classic sealed sold for $400ish.

$150-$200 seems more lilkley to get a buyer since most of the lenons sell for $99-$150 and the 16gb one goes up to $200.

Hope to see a photo of your ipod collection soon.By the way how come your selling your touch?

Its the Macy Gray box, selling because I like to change my collection as well as making a bit of money doing it to fuel other hobbies (like the gaming keyboard you see in my pictures :P )

I'd like to think my prices aren't that ridiculous to the right person, but unfortunately shipping to the United States isn't cheap! I would actually be loosing money on those costs :(

Howdy.

I recently acquired a 1st Gen 5GB iPod, serial # GQ243XXXXXX, week 44, (another site shows week 43) production number 206, (2002)

Are there any known out there with an earlier S/N?

This one is all good, works well, 547 songs, good battery.

Only issue is some light case wear, and, headphone jack missing a *tiny* edge section, but does not seem to affect sound or connection in any way.

Thanks, in advance, for any help.

Well, you actually have what we collectors refer to as an iPod generation 1.5 ;)
Considering the serial, its produced week 43 in 2002 after the second generation was introduced. Some would say your iPod is a refurb, but that has been debated in this thread. This said, there are lots of iPods with earlier serials out there. I myself have a couple from 2001 and early 2002...

I can't see the risk in providing us with the whole serial number. Have you checked the serial with this link? http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

The damage on the headphone jack is a common beauty flaw on used iPods. iPods without this damage are more valuable to a collector!

That's what I was thinking, the site you provided (thanks), was where I got the week 43 results.

I have a source where I come across used iPods, and have had a few true 1st, and 2nd generation ones come across.

I'll most likely be putting it up for sale soon, though.

thanks again for the help, really!

Yours was a second generation iPod with touch wheel. The wheel was not moving like the first generation wheel. Its not that rare in a used condition. ;)

I loved that iPod so much! After that I had a few non-Apple portable MP3 players and they were never as good. I am now back with the iPod Classic, I just wish Apple would offer one more update for this family with more storage (160GB is not enough).

Would be very interesting. Just watched a "retro-unboxing" video of the iPod photo. The guy made 5 errors during the first minute... There were 2 generations of iPod photos and they did not share the exactly same hardware than the 4th gen iPods (except the display). I'm still interested in things such as what audio chip was used (Cirrus, Wolfson?). Information makes a good unboxing. Information nobody remembers anymore makes a good retro-unboxing I guess. I always liked some of his (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVABiXyOzCU) real unboxings.

Search iPod classic first gen on eBay. There are a couple on there with box and accessories. Not sure what your requirement is for "very good condition". They seem ok to me but you decide. Some are in the UK too.

I'm not sure about the nexus. To some this might be of interest, but I do not think its the same hype as with apple stuff. And you should collect because you like the product, not as an investment. If you want to invest your money, buy art, gold or real estate instead...

i'm not a fan of the newer Nano so i went onto eBay and bought a 4th gen Nano in Product Red (the bright red, not the darker annodized aluminum red found on the 5th gen Nano). i got it for $68 and it's in MINT condition. it has the click wheel which IMO is better than the touch screen during one handed operation.

it also utilizes the 30 pin connector which means it works with all of my accessories, docks, and cables etc.

i used to have a 4th gen Nano a while back and i loved it so much that i ended up buying this one instead of a 7th gen. call me odd, but i think the 4th/5th gen Nanos were the best. nothing like watching that nano-chromatic unveiling by Steve Jobs and being WOW'd by the insane # of colors. i miss the little surprises from those presentations. the slideshows seem dull now

No, I think its a real dummy! It has probably some metal inside the empty shell to give the iPod the right feeling when holding it! ;) The apple logo on the screen is printed!

I believe there were a few revisions of the iPod Photo, first released in 40GB and 60GB capacities (white box), then 30GB and 60GB (black box) followed by 20GB and 60GB (black box). Perhaps the serial numbers and their production week will give some answers? I have a 20GB iPod Photo week 25 of 2005 if that helps, black box labeled only as "iPod 20GB PC + Mac"

Ah, if only I could get back some of the ones I have had, lol. I have owned every iPhone model since the original, and should have kept them instead of selling or giving them away when upgrading. And I had a first gen iPod nano 2gb black, that stopped working (I think the battery died or something), and I threw it away just a month or two before they started that program where you could send it in for a replacement. Talk about a face palm there, lol.

I'm dreading getting rid of it but there is no space left for new songs. :( I'm so bummed because I have made playlists so awesome, changed options like volume, time end/start and even have the songs play counts and dates added that i dont want to part with. :(

I used to really like the box for the 3rd gen classic and the 4th gen photo. I liked the largish boxes with all of the accessories. They felt like they were extremely high end at the time.

Nowadays, I think my favorite is a toss up between the 5th and 6th gen iPod Classics. I really don't care for the new packaging for the iPods these days. They're too simple. The 6th gen classic packaging is very similar to the iPhone.

Now I wanna go buy some Apple stuffs!

The photo iPod is like a 4.5 gen if we are being technical lol. Only thing it added was a color screen and the abilities to look at photos but not video that cam in the 5th gen. Other then that it was practically the same. Back in the day most MP3 players only did music so it was a big deal. Now everything plays mp3s video and has a built in camera just look at the smartphone technology.

They changed quite a couple of things on the inside. You might think that you can swab parts from the 4th monochrome over to the 4th photo, but in most cases this won't work. For example: Apple changed the headphone piece. The one of the 4th photo is a bit smaller. It also features a different capacitor in shape and size. The bottom piece (where you attach the 30 pin connector) is also slightly changed. The actual logicboard has different attachments for the display (obviously), the click wheel, and also the headphone piece. What stayed the same is the audio decoder. Apple changed it with the 5th generation and, again, with with 5.5th gen ipods.

However, I guess nobody of you collectors opened them and looked inside.:D I did, because I love using them.

Its easy really!

First gen sleeve says "iPod" with serif typeface. No hard drive size and no orange colored fields. If you look at the serial number it should say U2228XXXX. If the last two digits are greater than 28 its a second generation and the box should look like a second generation box. The purists also claim that all iPods produced after week 11 2002 are 1.5 generations
The box interior is made out of white styrofoam.

http://www.frohberg.se/annat/iPod/1Gbox.png

A second gen sleeve says "iPod" with non-serif typeface. The box are white, gray and orange. You can see the HDD size on the box (5, 10, 20 gig) and if its for Mac or PC. Interior translucent plastic.

I have a Harry Potter iPod in very good condition.

Won't be selling it though - Sorry

These are even rarer than the 1G.

I'm looking for the 2Gs that were engraved by Beck, Madonna, Tony Hawk

These are nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find...

I'm also looking for the 2Gs that were engraved with Beck, Madonna, Tony Hawk and No Doubt. These ARE impossible to find! I haven't even seen a picture of one outside apple.com :(

Anyone else perhaps?

Didn't they release an iPod Photo as a separate product that was sold with 30GB and 60GB capacities alongside the original iPod 4th gen monochrome and then at some later time (summer of 05 I think) they merged them in to one product line? My first iPod was a colour screen 4th gen with 20GB capacity so I know that it wasn't officially an iPod Photo

My humble iPod collection. It only consists of iPod 4th (and 4.5th) gen and iPod mini 2nd gen. I had an iPod 3rd gen once but sold it. My iPod touch 2nd gen is without sound.

On the left you can see the inside of an iPod photo 20 GB (top) and an iPod 20 GB with monochrome display (bottom). There were some considerable differences.

Bought original iPod. Produced 2002 February, quite early one. In good condition too, everything works. HDD seems like new, but battery won't obviously hold 10H anymore. Sounds good also! Impressed considering it was made 2001. Apple proves it again.

sealed it would be worth double ? :(

**** ME ... I assumed, since ipods are mass produced, that it wouldn't be worth much.

this ipod mini is pretty neat tho... decent enough sound quality and just for listening music the battery seems to last much longer than my smartphone...

I guess no operating system, no internet, no wifi blabla bla has advantages... as a simple mp3 player it will never become obsolete.

I'm European and not sure if here there are many collectors/collections here.

guys what would you do?

a.) On the internet, some people have modified this exact same model to put even 64 GB and a better battery... then this ipod mini becomes a beast. Is this worth doing? any idea of the costs?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iPod-mini-32GB-Blue-Compact-Flash-Upgrade-Battery-Upgrade-/161065632032?pt=Other_MP3_Players&hash=item2580428120

b.) a friend offered me 40 euro, would this be a terrible deal? (it's about $50 and I'm thinking that even if I sell it for $100 to an American I would have to pay ebay/paypal comissions plus shipping costs plus hassle so......?)

if there are collectors in EU feel free to drop me an offer: I have a google email account with the exact same nickname I am using here (gotta watch out for spambots)

I've started to buy up dead iPods on ebay and give them new life (and new clothes). I started with minis, but I just recently finished my first 3G, and I think I'm going to want to keep one of them for sure. Also, adding the diyMod - what I call the retroMod (http://retrosonicfidelity.com) - the sound is incredible.

Nice!
I've decoded to try giving fixing an iPhone 3GS, and perhaps a couple of the older iPods, but it depends on how much time I have.
Considering its my last year of school, I think I'm going to be pretty busy!

Anyhow, although I've sort of left my collection for a while, I did recently buy another stainless steel 3rd Gen iPod Shuffle.
Some guy had loads and was selling them for £27-£30. When they were released they retailed for $99 and were a limited edition, so I thought what the heck. Having two wont be the end of the world... :p

Plastic is exactly the same as other sealed iPods I own, 99% certain its not re-sealed :)

My local Apple store could tell me everything about the iPod, just not what's engraved on it, but the part number is P9961B/A so it's definitely engraved by Apple with something...

I'm wondering if Lithium batteries in these sealed iPod boxes would begin swelling one day? Could ruin everything inside.

Only during a certain manufacturing period the batteries could begin to swell. I think, all iPod manufactured from 3G up to 6G could swell. This is, of course, depending on usage. You have to completely drain the batteries from time to time. They have to "work". A moderate use is the best prevention.

My original iPod 4G swelled half a year ago. I managed to replace the battery without any visible damage outside. However, I practised it on 2 cheap damaged iPods before.... I never had that problems with the iPod mini (both generations). The battery failed before it swelled.

And how about those sealed collector pieces...

If the packaging starts to swell you should begin to worry.

I'm not sure which chemical reactions take place inside those batteries and which role possible remaining charge has. So far, I never heard of swollen batteries inside a sealed product. But, I could be wrong of course.
