The internals (chip) are different.
Depending on your needs, they truly are different devices.

iPhone 5 has an A6 SOC which is much faster and has twice the memory (1024MB) as the iPod Touch's A5 SOC (512MB).

iPhone 5 also has a GPS chipset; the iPod touch does not. The battery is also much larger in the iPhone 5. Also the phone has a better camera.

The only thing identical between the two is the screen, pretty much.

Hi,
If anyone wants to boost their collection, I'm selling some duplicates.
They include the Chrome limited edition 3rd Gen iPod Shuffle.
A silver/pink 2nd Gen Nano.
A 30/60GB 5th Gen Classic (Black/White)

Let me know if you're interested.

Apart from that, this thread seems pretty quiet.
Anyone found anything recently worth sharing?
Perhaps updated and collection photos.
No matter the size, a collection is a collection...

Hi,
Been a while since I have posted. Collection has gotten rather big, and have quite a lot of very good condition iPods.. all with boxes.

Cant decide if I should try to sell it.. have no idea how much it would be worth..

I made a shelf just for the iPods that work pretty well..

Those are not limited edition, if you consider how easy they are to find. They were produced in very large numbers. ;)

Thanks,
agreed, display is equally important, and makes the collection look quite nice. These stands also are great, which holds the iPods (had to modify most of them to hold the old iPods without dock connector).

Attached some better pictures, old ones does not really justify it:rolleyes:

Does anyone know if Brand new iPod nano in unopened box qualifies for Apple warranty despite being released in 2009?It depends on when it was bought from Apple or an Apple authorized reseller. You would need a valid (and legible) receipt and it would have to have been bought less than a year ago.

Doesnt it matter if Apple repair site says to specify the purchase date?

Doesnt it matter if Apple repair site says to specify the purchase date? For a unit that old, Apple will ask to see a receipt if you say it was bought recently. That is if expect warranty service.

Anyone who is having same issue, don't try to repair it. The swollen battery is acting as a wedge and there is no way to slide out the internals. I messed up mine employing too much raw force.

Just 2 weeks back, I purchased a broken iPod nano 4th gen. It was unable to power on, tried all methods and it still failed. Decided to dismantle it, to learn how to install a new batt( yet to purchase a solder gun, merely learning to dismantle it). It had the same issue where it looks like something is pushing the LCD screen to the glass".
The battery was badly bloated that it kind of "Jammed" sliding out the logic board.
And at this point I decided to use a piece of small flat screw and punctured the battery( gave out a smell lol)

So yea..

I have seen different iPod Photo boxes and now I'm wondering if anybody knows the difference? There is one white box with light blue text and there is a black box with the ipod screen with images and silver text.

I found pictures on both boxes, one in this thread and the other on macworlds webpage. Anybody care to clarify this?

Actually, there were two "iPod photo" iPods. One of them was called by Apple "iPod photo", it was shipped in white box with blue printings, it contains EVERYTHING you can get for this iPod (incl. dock and AV cable), but it was REALLY pricy. If I remember properly, 60gb iPod Photo costed 699.95$
So. later they replace it with an "iPod photo" in a black box, with poorer batch of accessories. No AV cable, no dock, -100$ price (if I remember correctly). And, of course, there were different capacities, as was mentioned already.

A! I really love to impress people :)

I'm collecting limited editions and 1st generation Apple gadgets.

For example - recalled iPod touch with iPhone OS 1.1 and display defect (you can also see it on that photo), which were produced only during 36th and 37th week of 2007.
Or iPhone with really unstable iOS 1.0
iPod 5GB with iPod firmware 1.0
iPad with iOS 3.2, etc.

And all limited editions, yes :) At the moment I don't collect red iPods, but I'll really appreciate your help, guys, to find Madonna's, Beck's and NoDoubt's iPods from 2002. At that point I'd have ALL Apple's official limited edition iPods!

Fralle - Unfortunately I'm having to dismantle the collection.
There are still some that I will keep, but I'm selling all the iPods I have that are newer than the 3rd Generations.
I'm sad to see them go, but it's something that I'm going to have to sacrifice in order for me to pursue other dreams.
Who knows. If this other venture proves to be successful, perhaps I'll try to replace them.
One thing is for sure. - I'm never going to lose my admiration for them, and I'll always be on the lookout for a catch ;)

I still have iPhone OS 1.1.4 on my 2G, and it's fun to use from time to time! It's quick, functional, stable, and the battery lasts a full 10 hours of heavy use! haha my favorite part of the original OS is just the simplicity. I wish the original iPhone had been 3G... because it's just so much more beautiful than the 3G was.

Cool and expensive! You seem to go for the third party collector iPods? That collector field is way bigger than the original apple collector editions like those iChernov are looking for! A lot of companies have modified iPods to be a part of their advertising campaigns. I my self do not collect those. Its hard enough to find all original iPods in mint condition! But Bloomingdale's Beatles iPod is really nice though :)

Hi there. New in.
I have a gold first generation iPod mini that is factory sealed. Bought in London just after they discontinued the gold version.
I also have and use a first generation green mini but bought the gold because I thought it might be worth something more than retail eventually.
Had a look on eBay but can only find second generation. I was hoping someone on this forum might be able to give me a good idea of price if I were to auction it.
Seems like the best place to get info.

I think it... really depends. The question is - will you find a buyer or not. You can sell it quickly for 500$, or you can wait for ages for offers higher, than 100$… That really depends.

I think you could get a lot more than 500$. The best way to find out is to list the iPod on ebay. The gold version is really the rarest and hardest to find. ;) I saw a blue sealed one sell for nearly 800$ a couple of months ago.

Does anyone happen to have a Speck ArmorSkin or ToughSkin case for iPod Classic 160gb? Or anything similar?

I'm trying to find a good heavy duty case for a new iPod Classic but I can't even find one! I had the Speck ArmorSkin and it was awesome (until it and my iPod were stolen :(), I would love to get another one. The ToughSkin also looks good, but at this point I will take any thick rubber case, or anything that will protect very well against shock.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster...

I have been searching for some information on iPod collecting for a long time, and am quite happy to have stumbled upon this thread.

I think that iPod collecting is going to continue to grow over time, and most of the pre-touch models will be highly sought after.

Even now I walk into pawn shops asking if they have any old iPods and the response that I get is "you mean the 80GB ones?". I politely explain that I'm looking for the 5GB or 20GB ones and they tell me that I'm mistaken... most people weren't aware of the iPod models prior to around 2006.

I'm quite sad to admit that I did the sell-and-upgrade routine as time went along. I remember owning the 2nd Gen Touch Wheel, then the 4th Gen Click Wheel, then the 1st Gen iPod Nano, 1st Gen iPod Shuffle, 2nd Gen iPod Nano, 2nd Gen iPod Shuffle, and finally 2nd Gen iPod Touch. I wish that I could go back in time to tell myself to hold onto these and their packaging... but I can't cry over spilled milk.

Now I'm slowly building the collection once again. I use my iPhone 4S as my regular go-to device, but I also use my 2nd Gen Shuffle when exercising. Pics to follow.

How can you tell which models were produced before week 11 2002?

Only one model existed. The original big white iPod for Mac only with a 5gig hard drive and a physical rotating wheel at the front. And the serial number ;)

Serial number should be: two letters (NOT GQ) and then some numbers. First number is year and the second and third is week. Letters are production plant. To be a true 1:st gen it should be two letters and then number 1 or 2. If you have number 2 (which means 2002) then the following two numbers should be less than 11 (week 11). So the serial "AB3410GBNAM" indicates its made 2003 in week 41. NOT a first generation iPod.

Very informative, thank you!

Just one last question... I see that a lot of serial numbers start with "U2" instead of 2 letters, does this get treated as another plant code and the remaining characters follow the year/week format?

Thanks again, very useful information

Jepp! Sorry my bad. "U2" is the original plant. Foxconn (Inventec) in Taiwan. The serial for an original iPod generation 1 should be U2143xxxxxx to U2152xxxxxx or U2201xxxxxx to U2211xxxxxx. I can not on top of my head remember when other plants started to produce iPods...

They are refurbished models. Nothing about them is original anymore. They are pre-used iPods, returned to Apple, fixed to original functionality with new electronics and sold again as refurbs. There are 1:st generation iPods found with GQ serials from 2006. The factories didn't produce 1:st gen iPods in 2006 so...

Refurbished at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refurbishment_(electronics))

GQ doesn't matter to some collectors, but I would never spend big $$ on a refurbished model.

Its a gem, yes. Even the original headphones are in the box still sealed which is like the holy grail for a collector. Great work in progress! On the 1st Generation portion I can confirm that the firewire cable does not include caps. It is wrapped in the wire tie as you said, but is also wrapped in plastic with a perforation that can make it easy to tear off (you can see the perforation under the china sticker in the enlarged photo). The tips of the wrapped cable are covered with small clear plastic sleeves. You can see all of these things in the attached photos.

You're a bit wrong. Apple continue to produce devices of a kind during 7 years after discontinuing date. 5 years - because that is an international service eligibility period, 7 years - because of local laws in California, where service eligibility should be at least 7 years long. Of course the amount of devices is way smaller than usual, and many devices are refurbished, but, anyway - "new iPods, produced in 2006" could be really a new iPod, produced in 2006, but produced for a service needs - as a replacement, not as the original product.

And now - a photo :) 4th generation nano is 4gb (super-rare) version

I know this. To me this is not a first gen anyway. Its really up to everyone to decide for themselves. To me and to many others, we like our 1st generation iPods to be produced during the 1st generation period with electronics from 2001. If you think different, fine. Thats really up to you ;)

I know this. To me this is not a first gen anyway. Its really up to everyone to decide for themselves. To me and to many others, we like our 1st generation iPods to be produced during the 1st generation period with electronics from 2001. If you think different, fine. Thats really up to you ;)

Nice iPods btw! :)

Ah,I don't care.

Thankfully they weren't, but I have the newer baseband which I need to downgrade before I can downgrade the OS. Every time I try to restore it via iTunes 8, it errors out that it can't connect to the iPod Software Server. Was able to fix that by killing iTunesHelper from Activity Monitor. Popped the iPhone into DFU, option+Restore with 1.1.4 firmware. I keep getting various errors, mainly from the 1600 block. No matter what I do, I can't it lower the 3.0. Its progress though.

1GB HP (blue box)

 I've been looking for one of those!! Maybe one day I'll add one. Luckily I have the original box to my HP 512MB but its slightly damaged. I also have a brand new in the box Shuffle 512MB from Apple. Found it on ebay for $30 and got it shipped from Canada. I always wanted a NIB one as the Shuffle was my first ever Apple product and first iPod. I only used it for a short time because 4-6 months later I got a iPod Video 30GB from a friend. I later sold the Video, but I found my very original iPod Shuffle a few years ago. I now have it sitting in a Shuffle Sports Case. :D

I should make a list of my iPods, I have quite a few including an original 5GB and 2 iPod minis with their original boxes. I also have all the Shuffles.

Err, scratch that. I have the 1GB HP iPod Shuffle with no box and a 512MB in the box. Neither are in mint shape (far from it) but they both work! The 512MB also has no cap or original headphones, but it has everything else including the booklets and original HP iTunes DVD along with the Tips card that says iPhone Shuffle+hp! I should a cap and pair of headphones. It came with the strap too, but thats used so I might replace it too.

Why don't you just keep it until you find a sealed one?

Because it is rather easy to find the opened one (this one is used, however - it is just put into original plastic wrap), and a friend of mine - collector also - asked me to give it to him. That was not a problem for me - I can live without it, because he need it more than me. And as long as I'm looking for the sealed one - why not?..

Because me friend needs this one more, than me, and he is interested in one of a kind, while I'm looking exactly for the factory sealed one :)

All of them are definitely engraved by Apple and sold or given out by Apple only - that's point of my interest. There are dozens of iPods, engraved by the third parties, but you will never count all of them - iPod is very popular device, and many companies engraved iPods for personal reasons. I mentioned only official Apple's special/limited editions

Yes, it is extremely limited, but it is not official Apple's limited edition. It was customized for Jaguar, but not by Apple.

So the Jaguar is a third party customization? Isn't it a edition made by Apple for Jaguar? And I wouldn't call the "Red Hot Chilli" a limited edition when only one was made...its more like a prize in a lottery ;-)

Yes, "Special Edition" is probably better. And if Apple created it - why not to call it the special edition? Even if it is unique :)

However, I'm waiting for your answer regarding ND - could you please answer my e-mail?

Why don't apple think about making a new limited edition? Say, limit it to 1,000 iPods. Should boost sales a bit.

That's easy - the volume of the iPods is decreasing every year, and Apple is spending R&D resources for the new iPhones/iPads/???. And they are selling millions of iPods - 1000 is _nothing_, even if the price would be increased. People will buy them in one second, but nobody will buy another iPods more often, than usually. And the iPod is already "yesterday" for Apple - they see no reasons to introduce even the new lineups (they already doubled the size of the renew cycle - now it is 2 years) - who will spend much effort for special editions?
There is (product)RED for enthusiasts - and that's enough for them. I think that they are thinking this way.

However, I can say you, why and when Apple introduced the special editions. It was done when iTunes Music Store got the new and very valuable artist. The only exception was the Tony Hawk limited edition iPod :) Madonna, Beck, No Doubt had special editions.
iPod U2 and Harry Potter iPod - also were introduced as "Welcome" sign to the corresponding artists/audiobooks series.
Answering your not-asked-yet question - I know that from one of the Apple engineers.
Red Hot Chili Peppers iPod was a bit special - the band organized the pre-order of their album (the first one in iTunes), and organized a promotion with Apple. And there were only one special edition iPod that time (however, I heard somewhere, that there also existed 30GB RHCP iPod, but it was given away in some another RHCP promotion, not through Apple, so I couldn't find the information - how, where and when it was given out, if it was).

And my question is different - why the Classic is still alive? They are keeping it without renewing for 5 years already - absolutely unexplainably.

Exactly, iPods are seen as 'yesterday's technology'. People are now buying iPhones, iPads etc.
the iPod sector is dying unfortunately. By making a limited edition line, they cold potentially boost sales in a dying market.
It won't help in the long term, but it should draw some attention to the existing range.

P.S Emailing you now

Probably they will make something with the iPod touch... this iPod won't die - it is "the iPhone without a sim card" - no reasons to kill it.

Don't mix what you see with what is real...
I'm just choosing a right angle to make photos ;)
For example Tony Hawk iPod does have some visible scratches, if you will turn it in another way:
http://s7.hostingkartinok.com/uploads/images/2014/04/25940f189eaff39364fe952da26b104b.png

And your Madonna's iPod (which I'm sure would be mine soon...) also have them :)

But the RHCP iPod is really in pristine condition and do not have any visible marks.

If we start to drift with the subject in this thread, where should we draw the line? This thread is primarily for iPod collectors to share their collections, but has over time evolved to cover everything "iPod collection" related. I myself am really reluctant to extend the subject to cover iPhones and other I-devices.

Dropbox seems to be having issues so I've posted all pictures to a shared folder instead at the link in my previous post. :)

Hi all!

I am fairly new to collecting and I am trying to purchase a first gen ipod but I'm not sure what some of the specs mean. Specifically the production year and number. Does production year and number matter if the model (M8513LL/A) is correct? I'm looking at 2 and one has the year 2001 week 49 number 6020. The other was year 2002 week 31 number 2378. Does this matter much will collectible value or no? Thanks for the help!

Hey!
The iPod has release dates of October 2001 (5 GB) and March 2002 (10 GB).

I would think the 5GB model, the very first is most collectable and the earlier it was made the better. I don't think it would affect value much though.

According to MacTracker:
The M8513LL/A order number is for the original 5 GB Mac compatible configuration. The 10 GB model introduced March 21, 2002 was assigned M8709LL/A, and the 5 GB (Scroll Wheel) model retained when the 10 GB and 20 GB "2G/Touch Wheel" models were introduced were assigned M8513LL/B (Mac) and M8697LL/A (Windows).

That's great! Thanks a lot for the advice! The earlier one isn't in as good condition as the older one. Makes for a hard decision. Both 5gb M8513LL/A.

Looks so nice! And nice collection btw! Mines not quite that nice but I'm starting to fill in the holes. Maybe you can help me one last time. I'm looking at buying this from eBay but I'm not sure if it's a decent deal because it's not brand new or in box but it's decent condition! http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171338251711?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Looks good, only thing I would say is not to rush into a purchase if your not 100% sure.

If you really want a boxed one it may be worth waiting a little longer.

Time to say goodbye...
Another nice little piece going. Thankfully it's going to another collector this time :)

The Apple boxes really come in handy ;)

As many of you probably are, I too am an iPod collector. It's hard to explain the feeling of getting a new iPod, eventhough you know there's no need for it:rolleyes:

...my iPhone is pretty much the only thing that gets use nowadays, but I still find myself trying to find a way to get the next one :D

Here's a thread to that you can creatively show your precious collection. I for one have my collection displayed as such...

Wow! That's crazy to see all of them together!! I haven't bought a new iPod since the 2nd gen iPod touch. I had the ipad nano the clip type but quickly grew out of it. Combined with my iPhone, I really haven't used my iPod much. Really cool collection!

Hi all - cleaning out my climate controlled storage and found a bunch of old Mac stuff. A few time capsule items for sure. For the iPod collectors: 1. New in box, factory sealed iPod 3rd gen classic - M8976LL/A. 2. New in box, factory sealed 1st Gen original / classic. How could I go about finding the collector value? Ive just posted the 3rd Gen to see what kind of offers come across.

Thanks!

Strange, but I cannot find Volkswagen or Jeep iPods anywhere...
