Its "in" right now.

Again!

I actually noticed my nephews doing that at a first communion a couple of weeks ago (I have a few your age) and I heckled them that their old decrepit uncle used to do that 20 years ago. :p

Popping your collar nowadays is often considered, among many, to be a message saying "I'm preppy, rich and cooler than you."

I do occasionally pop my collar on polo shirts, tho.

I like the shirt but no popping of any collar here....I thought not ironing your shirt was in style....guess not(I'm young and yet i'm not down with it)

Bah, you kids with your "fashion". I've been wearing the same crap since I was 14. Sad, I know. Hell, I still regularly wear shirts that are 7 or 8 years old now (at 23, that's a long time).

And no, I've never popped my collar. Or worn a baseball hat backwards. Bah, I say!

My cousin's your age, and he still wears jeans that he had when he was 16! Patches have been patched on those jeans, but he refuses to buy another pair. And he won't wear anything that advertises a brand. He's a peculiar one...

Even though a lot of people my age pop their collars, I'm not into it. Most of the people that I know that pop their collars are preppy/cocky assholes, and I don't want to be put into the same group as them. Nothing against those of you that do pop your collar, of course. To each his own...

A very random picture in one of the bathrooms. And no my hair is not red- the coloring is messed up. My shirt is actually blue, the walls are actually tan, and my hair is brown.

I sometimes pop my collar- but in this pic for the sake of peace, I did not lol.

I don't know why- but i am not a hat person, I don't even own one.

"Fo Sho"

Some shirts aren't for popping colars. I have found Abercrombie shirts have too big of collars to pop. J. Crew and Polo have good sized collar for popping.

Indeed. Which is especially ridiculous when you consider the trend reasserted itself through undergound rap before being popularized by Three 6 Mafia and Usher.

Hahaha. Nice. I will have to do that with my next Mac purchase seeing as there's a Dell kiosk like two stores down from it.

HaHa! I used to play little tricks on one of those Dell kiosks. The idiots removed the URL bar from IE and had some sort of filter. Anyways, I could launch webpages by typing a URL into Word and clicking on it. I set the hompage to a page on apple.com that compared the PowerMac G5 to other computers including a Dell. I was pretty amused with myself. :D

I should start using that. I brush my teeth at least twice a day with whitening toothpaste and I use mouthwash once a day, but I drink so much tea that it's hard to keep my teeth white. Tea stains ones teeth, one of the very very few negative side effects :(.

Kinda sorta. It's a mouthwash that you use before brushing. Then you brush. Since the mouthwash you probably used is Listerine, the same good ole' mouthwash you've been using works just like that. Only difference is you use it before brushing.

I usually announce when the MacRumors Members Photo Directory grows to a new, larger round-numbered size, but today I have a reverse announcement.

The Directory has been reduced by 9 members and 23 photo links because volunteer njmac reviewed the Directory and identified the out-of-date links, where the original poster had removed the photo being referenced.

The Directory totals are back down to 491 members and 1337 photo links. Once again we get to smirk at the number 1337.

Your use of the Directory should now be more relaxing and enjoyable and no longer fraught with the peril of following a bad link.

$80 on a shirt?! I hope those ones are handmade or have the most awesome fit they make you look like a Greek god or something like that.... Sheesh... I guess I'm just a cheap-o when it comes to clothes....

Note: Always buy things on sale. There is too much of a markup on clothing.

I'm kinda big, so you think they would have like kinda large sizes, becuase i could probebly fit in like a meduim, but I would want it to be lose, and now show my flab. Do they make them that size (i''''m not talking like xxxxxxxxxxL) but those companies seem to make things supersmall.

Yep, they have have L and XL some run a little smaller though.

RL POLO and Lacoste are my 2 favorite brands for polos.

edit: even though I dont have any I've heard that Nautica makes good quality polos, I just personally dont like the style as much.

I own one polo. It is The Only Polo In The Enitre World that looks good on me. I wear medium and larges of most things, and I am not fat, I am just tall and for some reason most polos do not look good on me at all. Lacoste makes me look like a 50 year old golfer (no offense to 50 year old golfers...you look fine, but I am 16 and play hockey, I don't want to look like you).

If you spend $80 on a shirt, what do you spend on pants? I generally spend >$50 on shirts and around $100 on jeans (7s and True Religions are my favorite...Nordstrom Rack and the Half Yearly sale are my friends).

Do you wear polos daily?

I have to admit that I only own one or two polos... First of all, they're way overpriced, and second of all, most of them look the same. I went to the mall the other day and only saw maybe 3 or 4 polos that I would wear. All were Ralph Lauren, and they had a pretty unique rock star look to them. I'm mostly a tshirt kind of guy, but if I was goint to buy polos I'd start with ones that look like this (http://www.polo.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2264223&cp=1760781.1760809&view=all&ab=viewall&parentPage=family). It breaks the mold as far as polos go...

Another thing that makes me dislike polos is that they are all sized too large. I have to get an extra small to get the kind of fit that I want... ideally the shirt would barely go below my belt and be pretty form fitting. I haven't been able to find that in polos that weren't from Abercrombie, Hollister, or American Eagle... and I refuse to shop at Abercrombie and Hollister. I'm just not much into the polo game.

Hahah. I can't manage to place an image. Give me a sec and it'll be up.

They're not expensive if you know where to look. You don't have to buy Polo or Lacoste or the higher-priced brands.

But then again I live in Shanghai where clothing is abundant and very cheap, and brands are faked left and right. But the small brands are actually much more stylish since all the Ralph Lauren/Lacoste/Nautica/etc. polos here are way too expensive, or if you buy fake then they're all plain, solid colours.

I like striped polos and the Eurasian brands they have here like Baleno, Tonlion and Giordano are much cheaper and more stylish. And you can find small, snug-fitting sizes if you wish.

For example at Baleno they had a sale. Two polos for RMB 80, or about 10 bucks American. They're kind of thin, but it's too hot here to wear thick clothing, and they're still very high quality and stylish IMO.

Example.

.

I'm amazed at that price because

a) we have to live on a budget that doesn't allow for $75 shirts. We make decent money, but after housing, utilities, food (and we don't eat out that often), student loans, insurance, retirement funds, etc, etc, etc, there isn't much left over for other purchases. Our clothing purchases have to be practical and bargains/sales. Even so, we maybe buy clothes like 2-3/year, if that. I still have clothes from high school (and a few sweaters from middle school), and I've been done for 10 years....

b) the mark up on clothes is horrendous. I got a $140 skirt from Express for $10 when it went on their clearance rack. I also got about the same deal with a blazer. And it's amazing to think that they probably STILL made a profit of my purchases. I refuse to buy clothes at retail price at any of the "fancier" stores. Clothes are cheap. It doesn't matter if they're designer or whatever. Sure you should pay a little more for better fabric, but I hardly doubt it's worth 3+ times as much as the other guys....

scem0 I'm with you. I have no problem shopping at thrift stores or second-hand stores. The money goes a lot farther that way. :)

My older brother is INSANE when it comes to cloths. He works at club monaco, so alot of his stuff is from there. But his cheapest t-shirt is probebly 25$ (plain white t-shirt) his most expensive t-shirt is like $70. His jeans are al like $300, he has like $300 glasses, his shirts are 100+ each, his blazers are 300+ each (but he got an amazing deal on a D&G blazer, originaly 1000$, he got it for 200.) But yea, hes nuts with cloths, and its only been like this for a year since hes been working at club monaco.

I'm not like that, but thats because I never have the money for anything really nice. I have 2 90$ shirts, one i got for 25$ and another for like 75$ becuase of his discount.

Abstract

Would some of you who don't spend much money on clothes pay more money to a clothing company that doesn't produce their products in a sweat shop?

http://americanapparel.net/mission/

I feel weird paying $5 for a t-shirt because you can imagine how little the worker who made the shirt must be making if the company who's selling me the shirt is making a profit.

On the other hand, companies that charge out the ass for a t-shirt are spending most of that money on useless advertising and their garment workers (or whomever they hired to make the shirts) are probably making the same amount of money as the companies who charge $5 per shirt.

If it didn't seem crazy to order a few t-shirts online from American Apparel and have it shipped to Oz and pay $20 USD delivery charge in order to get 3 shirts that each cost $15-16, I would have done so. I don't know how I feel about this sort of stuff. I really don't. Right now I've decided to be like everyone else and not spend too little on clothing, but not go overboard.

I have a lot of polos. Its mostly what I wear. These are just some of the ones I have- most are in the wash because I just got back from vacation a couple days ago and the others have not been washed. I accidentally took out that long sleeve polo- I have a bunch more of those too.

I stick mostly to Abercrombie & Fitch, Polo, and J. Crew because they are the closest stores. I do have some American Eagle, Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, and 1 fitting Lacoste shirt. American Eagle has many close stores but I find there cloths are not that great in quality and too many people buy from there. I bought a rugby shirt there and about 500000 people at school.

I like the new J.Crew logo on their shirts, its a little guy holding an oar.

I hate that green polo, I never wear it, never will, I think the tag is still on it. I didn't buy it. I have a lot of cloths I have never worn come to think of it.

And also

And Im assuming China sells all types of items
Clothes, bags, shoes, hats, and etc?

Absolutely. The abundance is astonishing. If you want good shopping you should visit either Beijing or Shanghai. In Beijing visit a place called Silk Street. It's a large indoor market where many foreigners go to haggle for cheap goods. Often the clothing isn't actually fake, but just rejects from the production line. Perhaps the logo on that Adidas track jacket was a bit skewed (which is actually the case for me). Always aim to bargain for about 20-40% of the asking price. If they refuse, say it's too expensive and walk away. 90% of the time they'll shout to call you back and be more permissive of aggressive haggling.

As for Shanghai, the big fake clothing market called Xiang Yang Market recently closed down. The land was bought out in favour of a large new shopping mall (you won't find fake stuff there!). But there are tons of little shops scattered around Shanghai that sell the fake clothing that once was sold at Xiang Yang. Also, there's a road called Qi Pu Road (pronounced Chee Pu, oh and "lu" is mandarin for "road") that has tons of small shops like Xiang Yang, but it's more obscure and harder to find. Ask the concierge at your hotel.

The quality of fake items is actually very good. Except for shoes. Shoes are often sub-par, and fall apart easily. You'll see the workmanship on all non-leather sports shoes like Adidas and Converse and Puma and Nike. Try to stay away from fake shoes.

The quality of clothing, however, is actually quite astonishing, and nearly as if not just as good as their real counterparts (I'm talking about build quality). Sometimes the logo will be a little off (after all, they churn these things out and you can't expect them to spend too much time on the little Lacoste alligator) but that's a small price to pay.

As for the "higher end" items you're talking about, when it comes to Polo and Lacoste, most of the time the Polo shirts I see are mostly solid coloured. But they're very thick and made with relatively high quality fabric that will last a while. They do sell Lacoste striped polos. But they also sell tons and tons and tons of dress shirts branded as Polo, DKNY, Hugo Boss, Giorgio Armani, among others. There is a much larger variety of dress shirts than polo shirts. Polo shirts are only a small part of the underground market in China.

As for Nike, stay away from the shoes. In fact they don't fake many Nike shoes here. The popular brands tend to be the more casual/retro Adidas, Puma and Converse. When it comes to sports brands there are jackets and backpacks galore that seem to be quite high quality. Except often the zippers on the backpacks deteriorate rather quickly.

So, to recap, bargain bargain bargain, stay away from shoes, go to Qi Pu Lu in Shanghai and Silk Street in Beijing, and have fun.

One last thing—don't be afraid of obscure brands. Visit the independent fashion boutiques that litter Shanghai. You can find all styles of clothing. now you guys see why everyone bitches about the price of macs

seriously people. get over it. gosh.

That's an unfair comparison. Macs earn people money, allow them to talk to loved ones, do work, are entertainment, etc.

A $5 shirt and a $60 shirt do the same thing - they cover your torso, chest, and upper arms.

but nice clothes just make you look better.

Agreed, but only to an extent. To me nice clothes are only an extension of the already existing beauty of the person the clothes are covering. You have to look the part in order to pull off nice clothing. You can't just buy nice clothing and you automatically make everything better or even look the part, though sometimes that can be the case with special exceptions. It takes all hell to break loose for somebody to pull off nice casual wear, i.e. Abercrombie & Fitch/Hollister Co., since there are so little people who can (you need to have the necessary fascia and appealing look to attain to the clothings desired purpose: tight body fitting, usually supporting only certain builds such as thin and curvacious for the ladies, and the guys should be built but have a thin structure but definitious), but is easy to pull off formal wear, i.e. going from cheap suits to nice, spendy cocktail attire, etc. It can be complicated, no doubt, but one must understand their limits. I love the science of fashion and appeal. :) :D

Abstract

Good G*d you're generically dressed. Surely you can do so much better if you can afford to shop in stores like that. Buy stuff that makes you look nice, or cool, or at least makes you seem like an individual.

Sorry, but wow that's a lot of plain looking polo shirts. I know some of them have stripes, but still....

I know. Some people just can't pull off a certain look. You can't just put on a nice shirt and automatically look nice.

You also can't buy good taste.

Are polos common among young people all over the US these days? Has it always been? I don't think they're common at all in Norway, except perhaps with the 40+ crowd, but I may have missed some recent development on the fashion front. I'm not really into it.

Am I the only one that would go to the salvation army store if they were to buy clothes? I never do, because I have old clothes that still fit me just fine, but if I needed clothes, there's no way I'd spend 20+ bucks on a shirt, that's outrageous.

$2 shirts, $4 jeans.... Salvation Army is the way to go :)

Eek, I can't imagine spending 25 bucks on a shirt! I wear hanes tagless Tee's - a 'Value Pack' of 5 of 'em is less than 15 bucks. Other than that I like tight small sized t-shirts that I generally got for free. My last clothing purchase was $5, a splurge :) - a t-shirt from a local vegan/vegetarian restaurant that I love and thought I should support by buying a t-shirt:

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/8020/1000461small5es.jpg

More stylish than a polo anyways! :D

e

Right on.

Spending absurd amounts on clothes does not make one more attractive. It makes you have less money.

If you're good looking, you'll look good in anything. Buying a $60 shirt over a $5 one because you think "it makes you look good" is a clear sign that you've got more insecurity than anything else.

I'm not really into it.Eh. I think it's because we Americans tend to be a bit more bummy than others... and we love our t-shirts. Wearing these polos is a way to have the comfort of a t-shirt while not looking quite so casual. That and I think a lot of people are too lazy to find clothes that are truly flattering-- heck, if it's got a designer label you're automatically, cool right? ;)

I do own some brand-name clothing... but I don't buy it because of that. I find that I really do enjoy the fit and feel/ quality of my Lacoste polos. *shrug* Plus, quite a few of them were gifts. :D

And as for the whole thrift store thing-- I"ve tried it, believe me. But I swear, every time I go to look for stuff, I don't find anything I like. But sure enough, whenever I ask someone where they got this or that item, they respond, "A thrift store." GARH!

I think I understand the motivation. I'm really just making an observation on the differences in what is considered cool. It could be just me and not a Scandinavian thing in general, but whenever I see a shelf or a section of a store with clothes by Lacoste, I think old people. Then again, what do we Scandinavians know, we didn't really get non-tube socks until this year.

Obsessed with labels.. does not make sense to KT.

I was obsessed with labels in middle school, but it was mainly because I couldn't have them while everyone else seemed like they could. When you have a family of six with basically only one single military salary coming in (my mom started working part-time after all the kids were in school) there's not much money for name-brands. My mom once even sewed me a bag that looked like the big Esprit bags that were in at the time and stenciled the name on the pocket. What a nerd and a fool I was.... Luckily, I grew out of that quickly in high school--so much so that I was proudly wearing home-made pajama pants to school at one point. Who cares what brand your clothes are so long as they look good on you. Frankly, I'm a bit wary of anyone who name drops the brands of clothing they wear during casual conversation unless someone explicitly asked for the brand. Offering up the information voluntarily and on a regular basis just comes off as a bit snooty or self-obsessed and maybe even a little insecure IMO. It's probably not that way for all people, but I've known plenty who really have done that just to show off. :p

Edit: markkk!, sorry, just saw your post. This is my last comment on the subject for now....

Buying a $60 shirt over a $5 one because you think "it makes you look good" is a clear sign that you've got more insecurity than anything else.
Agreed, but once again only to an extent. Buy a $5 tee-shirt at Wally World, then head over to the closest Armani Exchange and buy an $80 tee-shirt. Think of the garments fabric quality, softness, weight, appeal, and most of all, fit. Wal-Mart = cheap, rough-like fabric, heavy, bland, and very loose fitting. Armani = expensive, soft and smooth, light, intriguing, and snugs your body. If you had a loaded wallet, which would you buy? Most people fall in between. I'm personally not loaded, but I spend quite a lot of my budget on expensive clothes. They suite me much better than cheaper clothing. I go for the Armani. I'm not nagging and trying to say anything bad about people who buy cheaper clothing, please understand that. To exten that point, some people who buy more expensive clothing buy just to feel good or superior, which is ridiculous, because it makes them that much less attractive.

In all, it's what the person wants. If someone wants to spend $60 on a polo, and they feel good about it, then so be it. Same with the person spending $5 on a polo. They're happy, and thats all that matters, right? Hell, I spend $20 per peice of underwear, around $200-$250 per pair of jeans, and $40 just for a tee-shirt.

If someone wants to rag on people who spend too much on clothing, I encourage them to do so to me.

People will be people, thats why I love'em.:)

I suggest you visit a C-Pix franchise for a good selection of high-quality Threadless-like graphic tees for cheap (RMB 68 each). Also don't be afraid to visit the large shopping malls like those in Xu Jia Hui, or Times Square, Next Age and Plaza 66 (your hotel concierge will know about all of these). Ouch but not really. Lacoste is the new "in" brand if you ask me. In the past year I have seen more people wearing lacoste than I have in a long time. I remember when I was like 3 I had lacoste shirts and I really liked them because they had the crocodile on them.

I don't see why people are so concerned. Its our money, our choice, and our style. People don't go around yelling at people that they spent too much money on their car air freshener, paper towels, or pair of scissors.

You may not "understand", or "see" why people would spend $50 on a shirt but who cares. If you say that you don't care what other people are wearing, then why do you care that they spend $50+ on a shirt. So yes, people spend $50 on a shirt, ok- it is what it is why does anyone care. Would you rather see us wear loin cloths weaved with our bare hands. Some people spend $50,000 on a BMW when they could spend $20,000 on a Hyundai (hyundai also has a better warranty and probably is more reliable). Some people buy a $1,000,000 house when they could spend $100,000. Some people buy expensive shampoo, others buy suave. Hey, did you know some people spend $1500 on a Macintosh when they could spend $399 on a Dell PC.

What I don't understand is how many times we have to discuss this (along with Mac teens having nice computers).

I don't understand...

I never said I was concerned. Not at all. Buy what you want. However, there are some things you pay more for, and get better quality. I don't feel that way about Lacoste, so I never bothered. I still think it's for old men, but even "if" I was looking for a polo, I'd get one that was made of a better material. I have one, and it's very soft and made from a 50% cotton/50% polyester blend. Why is that better? Because they last longer, their colour doesn't fade nearly as fast, and because it's actually made to wick moisture. Nobody can tell this by looking at it, but since I live in Australia, this is a big deal. Too bad they don't sell it here. I think I bought mine in Singapore.

I love American Apparel. You can get it cheap on eBay. You can buy a six pack of grandmas pretty cheap on eBay too. I'm down to my last grandma. I should probably go stock up again soon.

Daniel.

Me 2 months older. I got a haircut few days ago. I swear, I could hide a frekin' gun in my hair before that haircut:D

Mate, I'm sure it's a splendid new do, but it's been cropped out. Did you do something funky to it that you might be ashamed of, like shave the Windows logo into your scalp or something? :p

Who the frak would do that? Only us Apple fanboyz would ever consider doing that, and it'd be an Apple logo, not a Windoze. :D

DJMastaWes
Jul 23, 2006, 02:47 AM
The teeshirt: Blue Marine co. It's a triple five soul shirt, the apple has no bite, it says "Think Soul"

The shirt: Lol, out of all the button up shirt, you chose the only one from Wal-Mart (for like 20$) the rest are from Club Monaco for like 70+... Interesting.

Hi! Nice photo, but why did you change it? The first one was great. Hi, I put the first pic with a light heart as a joke (wee bit of nudity) but my friend advised it wasn't a good idea to put that kind of pic in the public forum full of men. So I decided to follow his advice and change it to a normal pic. Thanks thou.

Its certainly not full of men, there's a fair amount of women around.

Although that doesn't mean that some of them wouldn't mind a wee bit of nudity either. :D

That can't be good. Even if it's Fahrenheit, it's still enough to melt aluminium, magnesium and lead.

No. 1372 is the accurate temperature for California. ...but no one is exactly sure because the thermometers keep melting. :p
