I am going to buy an ipod touch tomorrow. Can I find the serial number outside the box or I have to open it?

It will be on the back of the box, probably at the bottom with all the other info.

Go to Settings - General- About - 7th from top - Sorry - just read entire post. On back of box.

It's also on the back of your iPod Touch, at the bottom.
