Difference between DVD -R and DVD +R

I tried posting this in another section with no response. I am looking into backing up some design files on a few DVDs.

Does anyone know the difference between DVD -R and DVD +R?

My drive specs are: DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL

Is there a difference if your drive is compatible with both?
