Is anyone else here into egg nog?
I can't seem to resist it at the grocery store. Its terrible for you but I still love it.
My favorites this year have been Horizon Organic Egg Nog ("http://www.horizonorganic.com/products/eggnog/index.html), and Land O'Lakes Brand Egg Nog. Both of which, I think, are gluten free.
The Kroger brand seems to be alright. But the Moover's Brand was certainly the worst. Tasted like sugary egg nog flavor cream. Yuk!

Call me sick, but I dig the Hood Egg-Nog. In the carton, no plastic container.
Shaken, not stirred. ;)

Ok - that should be different, but not bad.
Just whatever you do - and no matter how drunk you get - regardless of how much $ your friends offer you.

There is a farm brand out here, Guernsey thats very thick. Thats a little too much for me. The store brands do tend to be not as thick,
I tend to like a little more spice in my egg nog. Thats what keeps me coming back.
I've never had it with rum tho. Maybe I'll try it this year.

I want to try the new nog-flavored version of Rice Dream. Anyone tried it?
Also, I've drank the stuff from grocery stores for years... it wasn't until last year that I tried REAL, actual egg nog.. made with real fresh cream, real (raw) eggs, and a TON of whiskey or something alcoholic in it. My god, it was good.. and thick.. and frothy. And inebriating! But once it gets warm it's no good anymore.

Mmmm, awesome. One of the best things about the Christmas season. It's weird, because I can't stand drinking milk (I hate the taste and everything about it), but I can't get enough egg nog. My biggest problem is finding a brand that's good. Most grocery store brands are too sweet and have a gross "bubble-gum" taste (probably the artificial egg nog flavor). When I lived in Arizona I was able to get the Southern Comfort brand, which was really good. Not sure if it's available in Kansas City, though...

I like to dilute mine with Sprite. Tradition, I guess, since that's what the family's done for as long as I remember. Except I do more sprite than nog (maybe 60-40 or 70-30) and then top it with nutmeg. Tastes good to me!
I have to concur with the others that it has to be a good brand, though. I'm hard pressed to find a good lower fat brand.

I sometimes will get the carton from the store, but in all honesty I like making my own. It's super easy to make, just warm milk, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, and nutmeg for a good start.
Every Christmas my uncle makes a 15 gallon batch of his specialty egg nog that he dishes out at his Christmas party. It's thick almost like a custard and it has a meringue like topping over it. Quite possibly the most fattening substance I've ever eaten, but the stuff is cherished by all who have eaten it. My family has fought over a single cup of the stuff.

hmmm...thanks for reviving this thread. I hadn't seen it before.
The best egg nog I've ever had was from Purity Dairy in Ithaca, NY. nothing--absolutely nothing--else that I've tried compares to it. It was more pure when I was a kid (20+ years ago), but even with added carrageenan it's the best ever. Incredibly thick, terrific taste.
Most commercial ones are too sweet and gummy (hood) or too plain (horizon if I remember correctly).
I made it myself 2 years ago and it had a tendency to separate, but tasted pretty good. I may have to do it again this year if I can't find anything like Purity.

Purity is a local dairy in Ithaca. I currently live 4-5 hours from there. The round trip is a little too much just for eggnog. My local dairy (Highlawn Farm) sells eggnog, but it's not their own and not particularly interesting. strong nutmeg flavor, but still fairly artificial tasting.
Lowfat and eggnog are words that should not go together. yeecch.

I think the only problem with making your own eggnog is the lack of homogenization (is that really a word?). It may separate and get icky.

would it at least last a couple hours for a party? Also, what about putting in in a jug that could be vigorously shaken prior to each pour, would that help?

That was my problem when I made it. It separated out pretty quickly. I put it in mason jars that I shook just before serving and it generally lasted long enough for consumption. I'll have to figure out a better way this next go around.
I may be heretical to some here, but I prefer my eggnog undiluted by alcohol. That's good as a drink and all, but it just gets me thinking about what it'd be like straight up.

Actually, the definition varies, but usually it's milk or cream (or both, possibly), with some beaten eggs and sugar. Optionally, you can add your favorite alcohol for flavor only, of course. :)
