Given how busy the other two San Francisco stores always are, then yes: it does make sense to open a third store in town.

I'm ashamed to say I live within easy walking distance of the new Chestnut Street store. That part of town (Marina / Cow Hollow) is a true yuppie/post-frat boy nightmare. At least there will be plenty of affluent buyers nearby to keep the portable POS terminals busy, and Chestnut Street is not as averse to new chain stores coming in as some other retail districts in San Francisco are.

So yeah, I'll take advantage of the new location, for sure.

Umm.. roughly 36 million people living in California that's more than the entire population of Canada (33 million) and substantially greater than the population of Minnesota (5 million) and the population of Colorado at 4 million.

Just saying....

Sorry, what is the link to see a list of new stores to open in the future?

I am in Idaho and our local :apple: reseller ######## absolutely blows, they are not customer service oriented people to say the least (everyone I know buys direct from :apple: for this very reason).

I (not that it will do any good, but I feel better:)) have written several request for an :apple: store emails to :apple:, I sure hope with as many states as they are currently occupying, they will open a store in Boise sooner than later

It may seem like there are too many in California but there are over 1 million people living in San Francisco alone. LA has more than that even and in southern California probably has well over 3 million.

California is a large state with a large population, but sometimes even we residents are surprised at how many stores are here.

Honestly, I am fine with the number of Apple Stores in Colorado. Well on second thought, all we need is one more for southern Colorado. Other than that there is no need for more here.

It just really seems Apple's placing all their eggs in one basket and should share the love... A quick count of 38 Apple Stores for Cali's "roughly 36 mil," versus 12 Apple Stores for Texas' 23.5 million people. Or another 12 stores for New York's 19.3 million people.

I have an apple store that's a few minutes away by train, so I'm not complaining. But it is a bit unfair on the rest of the world opening yet another one in california. And if you want to talk population density there are loads of whole countries lacking apple stores which have much higher populations than california ;).

Chestnut in the 80s was the most old-world SF neighborhood left, with old ladies shopping at butchers and bakeries, buying edible apples and chatting with friends. The 89 earthquake shook it up. Now it's one of the most chain-oriented shopping streets in the city. Marina District living is all about buying hip *****, so Apple will be right at home.

I'd love to see Apple think different and expand into the market of low-middle class accessibility, outside the classy suburban and urban bastions.

Those classy urban and suburban bastions you speak of are Apple's bread & butter. You don't see other high end stores in low-middle class areas either. A lot of people in those areas do not have as much disposable income. I think they probably have much bigger concerns on their plate.

In my 40 minute commute, I come within a mile or two of 5 Apple Stores:
Corte Madera
All 3 SF Stores
Emeryville

Now that's convenient.

Thought they should open an Apple Store where the original San Francisco Tower Records was at Columbus & Bay. Landmark location with PArking

You mean like Valencia Street in the Mission (SF)? I would love it but most of us Mission types hate any chain coming in. If they made iPods with tattoos then they might be allowed.

Ah, Valencia Street, the land of Macbook-toting, track-bike riding hipsters.
I think they should open an Apple store right next to Ritual Coffee.
After all, on any given day, there's like 20 to 30 Apple laptops in there...

So who's thinking about venturing out for the grand opening? I normally wouldn't dream of facing the hordes on Black Friday, but this tempts me. Not sure how much they're publicizing the opening, so it may not be insane in there.

They generally don't have grand opening specials...just the free T-shirts. So I'd expect that plus the standard Black Friday deals.

Not to say I can doubt everyone's bitterness over SF getting Apple Store, but it is a capital of advertising and desktop publishing in the States. Chestnut street, which is in the Marina District, is a very wealthy area.

It makes perfect sense to me. Move on out to Cali, I'll buy you guys a beer.
(and I agree that an Apple store on Valencia or Mission would probably be ill received.)

For another perspective on why Apple would choose to open another store in San Francisco instead the many other locations suggested by others...

Consider that MacWorld and WWDC are held in San Francisco. There's also probably a higher concentration of tech workers in the bay area than any other major metropolitan area in the country. So anything that Apple can do to drive adoption in this area is likely to bring more developers to the Mac platform and more attendees to the conferences they hold here.

So perhaps Apple is looking somewhat beyond the retail sales that this new store is likely to generate. Of course, as others have mentioned, there's a lot of disposable income in the marina area as well, so the store will no doubt do quite well regardless.

I swung by Chestnut Street late this evening - and the light from the Apple store was blinding.
Seriously, you could see the light from several blocks away.
I parked my cab in front, and took some pictures with the iPhone...

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5143/applesideru4.jpg

There were a couple of security guards inside standing around, presumably
to remain until the 9:00 am Friday opening.

Here's a view looking inside from the right...

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/9901/apple2yz0.jpg

And from the left (SF tends to lean a wee bit to the left)...

The light from the store was so bright that it lit up my cab nicely for this shot
(not to mention the buildings across the street)...

I'm debating whether it's worth a free T-shirt to drag myself out of bed and
get down there in time to be among the first 1000 people in the door...

ifo Apple Store (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) does an awfully good job of keeping on top of the Apple retail store scene. In particular, this page (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/stores/chronology.html) keeps track of store openings as they happen, including officially announced opening dates and future stores revealed through observed construction and job postings.

Well, I managed to drag myself out of bed and made it down there at 0845.
The line was already around the block. I got in line, and heard cheering as
the line began to move at 0900. Here's a shot looking down Chestnut street
after rounding the corner:

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/8863/storelineaj9.jpg

The line moved surprisingly quickly, and by around 0920 found myself close to the door:

http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/718/storelineclosefu2.jpg

There were still plenty of free t-shirts to be had...

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/3348/storeshirtsah0.jpg

With surgical precision, I snatched up $100 worth of on-sale items, and headed out,
but not before getting a shot of the awesome, unique Apple logo:

http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/4094/storeinsideuv4.jpg

I then headed to Peet's (a few doors left of Starbucks in above photo - with vastly
better coffee, BTW) to take inventory of the booty. Here's the view from there:

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/4061/storewideci0.jpg

At 1000, the last people in line made it inside the store. Later that night, long after closing,
I drove by and saw that there was a security guard using an iMac in the back of the store.
The store was lit up, bright as ever. I suspect there will be someone stationed
at the store 24/7, as this could be the ultimate Smash 'n Grab™ opportunity otherwise...

I would like to mention one thing to all the people complaining that there are so many stores in CA and none in other places...Apple's HQ is located in the Bay Area about an hour away from San Francisco...You would have to imagine they would make sure that there home turf is covered before going to other places especiallly other places in the world. Thats like the San Jose Sharks putting This is Sharks territory signs in Anaheim before they put them in San Jose.

Other examples which are similar are starbucks and the Seattle area. and then the NHL store only has a store in NY because thts where the league is operated from.

FYI: You cannot walk two blocks in the cities on the East Coast without bumping into Starbucks. Plus the parallel you drew between Apple and sports does not seem logical to me.

Interesting links, although the information for Louisville's Oxmoor Center store (very close to me, yay!) on the chronology is slightly inaccurate. "Just east of downtown" is an understatement. There's about 5 miles between downtown and Oxmoor as the crow flies, and even with I-64 linking downtown and the I-264 interchange just south of Oxmoor, it's still a fifteen-minute drive from downtown to Oxmoor, and longer under heavy traffic conditions.

Not that I'm complaining. At least Louisville now has one!

I do think there are too many Apple stores around me (4 within a 20 minute drive -- Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo)... but there are also 2-3 Bloomingdales within a 20 minute drive, and many other high-end "rare" stores (H&M, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Lacoste, etc.) around.

Plus all the Apple stores I've been to are usually kind of packed, and do very good business. Might be a California thing, with the good weather and all our malls.
