When I alt-click and select the iPod touch firmware (downloaded here) (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3882.20070910.N8uyT/iPod1,1_1.1_3A101a_Restore.ipsw) It desn't do anything. How do I fix this?

I'm such an idiot. The firmware I downloaded was 1.1 not 1.1.1

the one i downloaded: iPod1,1_1.1_3A101a_Restore.ipsw
the one im downloading now: iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw

Further implications,

SOmehow the downloaded .ipsw file became a folder and I can't use it to restore my iTouch to 1.1.1, WTF happened here?

Apparently, the ipsw file is just a zip file (with another extension). Safari unzips this after download. I think you can disable this by deselecting 'open safe files after download in the preferences. You can also just zip the directory again int the finder and change the extension from .zip to .ipsw

I would say go with the above zip it up rename extention and try that if that fails try saving to disk as a .ipsw file from download link

Ok, I've fixed it (thank goodness for time machine)... But now I'm not getting the iPT into recovery mode. Am I supposed to to have it plugged in but not connected to iTunes then press and hold both buttons until it gets into recovery mode? What are the correct steps, including when to plug it in and all

thanks guys :D

Ok, I got it into recovery mode but now when I try install I either get an error (1) or some other 4 digit error starting with a 1. whenever it fails I restore to 1.1.2. I'm going to try and re-download the file (for the 3rd time now). I think there may have been a problem resuming the download of the time machine backup.
