Where is the carbon fiber poll option?

Actually, I use a binder clip with one of the squeezy things removed. Sorry, no camera at work for a photo... This is more of a stand than a dock. And it's the large binder clip.

I use a Belkin dock that has a built in 5-port USB hub. It cost me like $20 from Woot. Great purchase.

I guess no one just connects the cable directly?

I use the standard dock from Apple with my (5G) iPod Video, but just use a USB extension cable with my (1G) iPod Shuffle.

I don't use a dock because I keep my 5G iPod in a case to keep it from getting scratched...

If I had a nifty new iPod Classic and didn't have to use a case I would use a dock :)

Um, I had to tinker A LOT to get it to fit, it still isn't "just right" the wiggle space is around 5 mm, but I guess thats OK. none of the standard knex connections worked so I needed to use weird combos.
