iPod battery life

What is the actual amount of time I should get out of my iPod battery, once it is fully charged.

If I don't fiddle with the buttons (just hit play and let it ride), I'm getting about 7 hours, more or less.

If I keep messing with the buttons, which is more what I do, I get about 4 - 5 hours.

Not too impressive. I like the iPod's looks, but battery usage is terrible!
