Hi,

I know Internet Explorer is extinct for mac, but does anyone know how I can get hold of an older version?

I need it to run web-based program that can only work in IE.

Unless the web-based app specifically mentions the old IE for Mac (5.2) there's no guarantee that'll work either. There's plenty of IE-only stuff that didn't work for IE for Mac either.

There is plugins for Firefox that makes the webapge think you're using IE. It's called User Agent Switcher or something.

I have it.

I have the old 5.2.3 installer on a disc. I can transfer it to you if you'd like.

You can get it here. But as others have said, when site say they require Internet Explorer, they frequently mean the Windows version. The Mac version is completely different and often won't work.

If they're simply doing a browser check you can often change the user agent to fool the site into thinking you're using Windows Internet Explorer. In Safari, you need to enable the Debug menu to allow you to access the "User Agent" options.

I'm pretty sure that only works on Windows.

Also, I've read the reason that some pages only work in IE is because of ActiveX, which the Mac IE lacks anyway. You're better off using a virtual Windows or Boot Camp to test it.

I greatly recommend Crossover for a more recent IE version...

You are thinking of ieTab, which is windows only, changing your user agent should be multi-platform.

how do you go into debug mode? or get the debug on your menu bar??

I've been trying to install IE for free on line but can not seem to launch it. Am a newbie that needs a lot of help!!

Can you provide more details about what's going wrong? You can still download it from the link I posted above, and then you just run in the installer. It should work fine on every OS up to and including Leopard.

The other question is whether you really need it...it's horribly outdated, a security risk, and you can almost always find another, better browser that will work for whatever you're doing.
