i'd love to get this for my mom but i don't think she has nike + shoes. has anyone used it? is the sensor small enough to fit under an insole?

It would be uncomfortable under an insole. But there are lots of cheap, nice 3rd party accessories that you can use to attach it to your laces. I use a little marware (I think) pouch that cost $5.
