Random question for you guys. :) Did you guys all know each other before coming mods? Did you meet each other in person before becoming mods? I have wondered if you guys are all old time friends running the site...and doing an excellent Job at it. :D

No, we haven't all met. I've only met three of the other mods/admins in person...two before I became a mod and one since.

It started out with arn and blakespot and grew organically from there as people were added based on areas of expertise, demonstrated dedication to the site, and knowledge of the secret handshake.

I've actually only met Wildcowboy and Longofest personally. And that was in this past year. I do know blakespot personally - a high school friend - but he's not involved much in the day-to-day.

I've met eyelikeart (who isn't really active on here anymore) but have yet to have the pleasure of actually meeting face to face with the others. We've had a few multi-person video chats, though, which helps put faces with pseudonyms. Hopefully we can all make it to macworld or something similar and meet up - I have my fingers crossed for this year.

how do you become a mod?You don't choose modhood, modhood chooses you. ;)

Basically, when the mods feel that their numbers need bolstering they decide amongst themselves who to offer the role to. They'll no doubt consider things like length of time people have been members, general helpfulness and attitude towards others... basically, those posters who have proven themselves to be good and respected members of our online community are those who are liable to be asked.

Yes, but two of the gods live in the same city, the other not that far away... I had assumed they had known themselves before and one of them moved out, or something to that extent.

arn and blakespot are a couple of hours apart, and as arn said, they go way back. But Mudbug is well over 1,000 miles away from them. Doctor Q is over 2,500 miles away, and Knox is across the Atlantic. So the gods/admins are quite spread out.

So why do mods volunteer? Is it the interest in the subject matter, or what? How long do mods stay mods, and do any do it for a short period and decide it's for them? Anyway, I commend all you mods for your dedicated service to us Mac aficionados.:)

WildCowboy
Dec 1, 2007, 10:51 PM
Mods don't really volunteer for the job. They get invited, and then they accept of decline. Why do we do it? For the love of the community...as you know, this is much more than just a Mac site.

Mods can stay mods for as long as they wish...presumably one could be stripped of his/her position if found abusing their power, but as far as I know, we haven't had that situation here. Occasionally a mod will ask to retire, but it's more likely that they'd just kind of fade away as they reduce their involvement in the site for whatever reasons.

Guess I should read more.

I've been invited to be a mod at another forum, but I don't want to do it because the application involves some personal questions and the forum is mostly Nigerian spam anyway.

It would be fun to be one here; but I doubt that would happen.

Contributing doesn't buy you the automatic right to become a moderator.

I suppose, you need to reach a certain level before MR would consider you to become one.

Beg like crazy to become moderator. Feel users will be grateful that you became a moderator. Get drunk with your new forum powers. Find the job harder than it is. Quit in disgust because you feel under-appreciated and misunderstood.

Asking to be moderator is a lose-lose proposition. They come to you.

There is no level AFAIK. You don't have to have a certain amount of posts. If you've behaved well and been active and kind, you may be asked to to join the team one day but usually there are no new mods hired unless old ones leave the duty. This is what I remember when I asked from one mod via PM ages ago :)

You must go through the 12 rites of passage. Eventually, you will be given the secret code where you enter the Holy Shrine of Doctor Q and must pass one final test (many have failed and are no longer among us). Then, if you pass, the holy title is given to you of...Moderator.

gods are the forum administrators.

And if you cannot figure out the difference between god and goddess, you might want to retake that sex ed class you failed.

Demi-Gods without the the "(Moderator)" tag are not moderators and have no special rights. They are same as Contributors. You can choose between Demi-God and Contributor when contributing.

So in a nut shell:

God = Admin, have all mighty powers etc
Demi-God (Moderator) = Moderator, have rights to do stuff and work as "cleaners"
Demi-God = Contributor, no special rights other than the access for special forum

@Mods: Do you have to be demi-god in order to become a mod?

I admin a forum that has roughly half the daily unique visitors as this site has with 2 other admins and 2 mods. Trust me... you don't want the job. It is a major PITA sometimes especially when the users KNOW you are one because you get people PMing you like crazy to ban this person/this is spam/someones being mean to me and other crybaby bullsht. The only reason I continue to do it is because I respect the company and the community too much to let it go to hell. If it wasn't for that, I would have hung up the reins a looonnngggg time ago.

I would gather with the amount of younger people on this site compared to the one I admin for, these folks have their hands full.
