I don't really understand the question, but the size of the Time Machine disk/partition can depend on wether how far back in time you want to have backups. If you have a smaller disk it will record til' it gets full then start erasing the oldest contents on the disk.

well the problem now is i have a 250 gig hard drive thats pretty much full...i can probably squeze 60 gigs.. So i don't have much space. I don't know how time machine works, but my hard drive on my computer 120 gigs, then if I were to fill that up max, i could probably agree, time machine would do the same.

Your Time Machine drive needs to be at least as big as the total amount of data you want to back up, and preferably much larger.

If you have 87GB to back up, your Time Machine partition will have to be bigger than 87GB, and if it's just barely large enough, then you're not going to have copies going back very far in time.

60GB is not terribly useful.
