View Full Version : Logitech MX Revolution Wireless Laser Mouse

I found one heck of a deal on this mouse during a Google search.
Logitech MX Revolution Wireless Laser Mouse (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/I_O_Devices/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0715769)
Right now, this mouse is only $40.00 with a list price of $99.99! It works quite nicely with Mac OS X as well. It has a Li-Ion battery inside which is great IMO. Logitech also updated the driver for Leopard here (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/494/3129&cl=us,en).
Just thought I would let everyone here know...

Thanks for the heads up. I've been eying one of these for a while. For $44 shipped, I couldn't pass this up, even if I did have to give Dell my money. ;)

It's a great mouse. Super comfortable, just about perfect (well it could be bluetooth and require no dongle, then it would be perfect). I used the wireless mighty mouse that came with the imac for three weeks then switched to this. No jerkiness issues on waking from sleep, back, forward, and google buttons, far more ergonomic.

Sounds like a good deal. I don't really need another mouse, but Logitech is one of my two brand picks for mice.

They are great mice but logitech's software is terrible. Its the same on windows side as well. Frankly it puts me off logitech products. To get the full power of their mice you need extra software like steermouse or uberoptions.

I haven't had experience, but apparently the recent update to Logitech Control Center made it good...

What's normally the case for me is that I don't actually use more than two buttons anyhow, so I'm never in need of a manufacturer's software. However, I've heard this kind of complaint by others on numerous prior occasions.

I have a Logitech Optical corded mouse with a scroll wheel, that also functions as a 3rd button, that works with my Macs and my Windows computers. It works great without installing software.

Success with Logitech software is hit or miss. I'm using Logitech Control Center v. 2.4.0 with my MX on the iMac and it's fabulous! There are so many possibilities for button mapping in this new version. Here's mine........

Slightly OT: With that mouse and the Nano VX when scrolling does it scroll per pixel (smooth), as when you are two-finger scrolling, or is it like every line (choppy)?

You can set the scroll wheel to either free wheel (smooth), click for each line, or to auto-shift between the two depending on the speed you roll the wheel. That's with LCC. I don't know if Steermouse has this control.

Great price for the mouse, that's not much more than what I paid for my MX1000 last year, most places still seem to sell it for $75-99.
Latest LCC doesn't look nearly as bad as old versions, but their use of APE turns me off entirely (edit: looks like the new version doesn't use APE, it comes as an InputManager, hrm). I switched to Steermouse when I originally got the MX1000 and haven't looked back. Upgraded to the MX Revolution no problem, except that I don't seem to be able to get acceleration and tracking speed settings that I'm happy with, compared to the MX1000. This one thing has kept LCC in the back of my mind.

Yes. Only glitch I've noticed is that sometimes when activating the mouse after a period of inactivity (especially if it's been on its charging cradle), it seems to set itself into the mode where you click the wheel to switch to frictionless scroll mode, instead of command-clicking and auto-shift scrolling which is what I have it set to do. Don't know if it's Steermouse or a bug in the hardware. Quickly unplugging the USB receiver resets it. Steermouse also lets you tweak the auto-shift behavior, but you need to edit a plist file and log out to see the changes.

Ouch! Was about to get that for my MBP but never mind. Dongles suck!
I might get it for my current and/or future Mac tower or all-in-one but dongles cancel any chance of me using that for my MBP.

Download the steermouse trial and see just how many options you are missing. There are loads. Especially being able to program every button on the mouse not just the ones Logitech think you should be able to.

Does anyone suffer the ongoing problem with the mouse not responding from time to time... or is your receiver pretty close to the mouse for it not to be affected?
USB Overdrive is pretty good as well, it just currently lacks the search button function. Even with the latest Leopard version. 10.4.8 (http://www.usboverdrive.com/USBOverdrive/News.html)

I have a MX Revolution mouse and occasionally it will stop responding. Every once in a while it the pointer will stop moving for a couple of seconds. I have tried moving the receiver but it doesn't really make a difference. Right now I have it plugged into the USB port on my monitor so its pretty close to the monitor. It does the same thing in Windows under boot camp.

APE is no longer used in the new version of LCC.
Prior to your reply I edited my post to mention that. In fact I've giving LCC a try right now.
One thing I found is that it installs an InputManager called "LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader" which seems to do nothing useful, and it prevents Growl from working, and bugs out some other applications. Removing it doesn't limit the functionality of the mouse (including scrolling) so I recommend you do.
Download the steermouse trial and see just how many options you are missing.
Hmm, not sure what Steermouse allows you do to that LCC doesn't. They both allow you to totally customize the function of every button on the mouse, including horizontal scrolling and the like.

That's the point is does do more than lcc.... For example LCC won't let you bind the search key to a combination of keys. It won't let you change the thumbwheel to something else you want.

Pricegrabber still lists the OP's price quote, but when I click on either link.... its $99 bucks? what gives?
I really want the MX Rev. but can only afford something in the $40 range so this was really exciting until I found the higher price.

Anyone see this on engadget:

Does this mean you would not have to use a stupid receiver dongle? i bought a mighty mouse yesterday for the reason that the dongle was a pita, and now I am irritated by it- I would love a bt mx, if it will work without a dongle. Are there any performance disadvantages with bt over logitech's radio connection?

Purchased the MX Revolution a few days ago. How can you tell the battery life? Is it the actual battery image or the number of squares above it?

There are three lights above the battery image. Three is full charge and it will drop to two, one, then none as the battery charge depletes.

Yes, it would use the internal bluetooth receiver, if you have one. Pairing would likely be the same or similar to your mighty mouse. Wait for logitech to release it for more details I suppose. I will also be keeping my eye on this.

4 actually. The battery LED (normally green) turns to red once the other 3 green LED's have went out. :)

If you're wondering how the MX, or any mouse, is just buy it from Best Buy (or similar store) and try it out for a couple days. Simply return it if you don't care for it. Take care of it and keep all the packaging.

I honestly can't see why someone would want to send it back xD

I love mine too and feel the same way about every other mouse I use - particularly my school's mice! I try to force them into spinning like my MX Revolution's wheel but they just won't... stupid Microsoft brand mice xD
I take it you have it set on Free spin, too?
I'm on my second one - the first one had a faulty scroll wheel but this one is great.
Funny thing: The Logitech support guy told me (in an email I still have somewhere) to smash my mouse with a heavy object if Amazon wouldn't take it back, then send a picture to Logitech with the Serial number written next to it. I thought to myself "Wow. I think I'd rather just live with a faulty mouse than be potentially pranked by a bored support guy". Seemed kinda weird. lol.
By the way, does anyone know how long the mouse takes to charge? There really isn't much information included with the mouse and I don't want to leave it charging overnight to find that I've overcharged the battery... or is smart and stop charging when it knows it's full, rather than killing the battery by trying to cram more in it?

I've been wanting this mouse to use BlueTooth forever, thank you :). Does anyone have a rough idea of how long it will take them to come out with this now that it's been approved?
About returning the mouse from Best Buy, I actually *just* got home from Best Buy after purchasing the MX Revolution :), it's sitting next to me in it's box. Do they charge a repackaging fee or anything if I open it to play around with it? There's a little piece of black tape holding it shut where you access the mouse.

About time Logitech released this mouse on bluetooth! Can't Wait!
I emailed Logitech's CEO Guerrino De Luca about adopting Bluetooth technology in their mice.
He said they were working on moving more mice to Bluetooth, but was concerned about battery life and connections dropping from time to time as Bluetooth times out.

I looked around a bit, and the BT version of the MX Revolution already exists (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4246).
In fact, there are people already using it (http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B0011FQUQG/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_summary?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending).
The only catch is that as of now, it's only available as part of a $150 mouse/keyboard set (the MX 5500)... and personally, the keyboard is nothing I would want.
But the bottom line is that a bluetooth mx revolution already exists and is in use! :D Hopefully won't be long until it's available as a stand-alone.

This is part of the reply I received from Guerrino:
- we do continue to look at bluetooth and have just brough out a new BT
mouse called the V470 (available on Mac & PC). Our real challenge with BT
is that it is a network technology - this means that there is a lot of
overhead associated with creating low power, low bandwidth peripherals
which need a high degree of responsiveness. Translated simply, BT mice
suffer from pretty poor battery life (around 3x less than an equivalent 2.4
Ghz mouse) and also have much slower responsiveness (slow to wake from
sleep mode and also have a lower reporting rate).
There is a new version of BT planned for 2008 which will address some of
the issues above and which will enable us to provide a better experience.

I bought the MX 5500 Revolution, though of course Logitech doesn't support OS X with their bluetooth (at least not this device). It still works as a normal mouse for clicking, scrolling, etc, and I can type with the keyboard, but not much else. Does anyone know if there is software around that will let me program the buttons on the mouse (mainly) and the keyboard (would be nice, but not as big of a deal)? I tried downloading Logitech's software for the non-Bluetooth Revolution, hoping it would work, but no luck.
Thanks in advance.
