I am buying an iPhone in the next week and I don't want to spend the money on the contract. I need someone to explain to me step-by-step how to unlock it to use on any simcard. It's from the UK so I expect it will be a 1.1.2 firmware. Thanks for any help!

If your expressly looking to get an iPhone and use it on a network other than O2 then quite simply don't buy a UK one now.

There is no current unlocking method for an UK sold phone so your out of luck. You can jailbreak but that just gives you a touch. The new bootloader has presented problems I really wouldn't waste money by having it tied up in something you cannot use.

It is not possible to unlock the iphone in the Uk to use any networks sim card. This is because it has a new bootloader which cannot be hacked at present.

However the phone can be unlocked to use any o2 sim so you can use a payg for example.

See this link for updates on unlocking the iphone with the bootloader
