Yay, now as soon as I get my PowerBook this week I'll have to update the OS! Just what I would have ever hoped for! :p

well i have found no real improvments on 10.2.8, although things do seem a bit slower, i don't really mind, but my g4 powerbook seems to be now just a tad faster than my imac g3 350... o well it seems like i can type faster than the screen can show now....? wait this computer is only 4 months old!!!! NNNOOOOO that isn't supposed to happen!!! i only type 38 words a minute!!!! well i think this is a little bit slower, but i haven't turned my computer off since i've updated so mayb if i turn it off or something like that, there will be a difference.....

The guys over at macpolls.com seem to be really reaching for poll topics. How about another on the topic of a one-button mouse, just to see if anyone has changed their minds?

You are free to suggest better topics. Send them to ideas@macpolls.com. How 'bout a poll on whether the poll topics are excellent/outstanding/fair/poor?

I had a serious failure with 10.2.8. It killed my ethernet's 10-T half duplex capabilities. I've reverted that .kext, but that's probably beyond novice users, who may not have a second machine to log on with to get the "downgrade" anyway.
Once I fixed that, it's been fine, but I can't say it didn't have major problems.

eh? An update?
well judging by the info site, it seems to be only for bluetooth, ibook and powerbook users.
But security updates do appeal to me, as do safari updates, because, well, safari is the most unstable piece of crap software i have ever used. I just hate IE because it looks bad and all my bookmarks are in safari
So do i install the update?
I'm on a dial up connection and would prefer not to download a 40 meg file unnessarily.

Most polls seem to be just for fun, while this one actually seems useful as an indicator of how cautiously to approach an update.
I hope they do this for every update, so I can see the early-adopter experiences nicely summarized! And if there are many votes indicating problems, I can then dig deeper.

I installed it, and while it hasn't done anything spectacular, it has fixed a couple of small problems I've been having eg. the clicking iBook problem). Using F4/F5 to adjust volume still doesn't work properly though :(

by reading another forum I got the impression most people were having troubles with the upgrade, but by looking at this poll you see it's only 3% (at this stage).
So now I think I will upgrade, even if I do lose my transparent dock.

Fixed the popping sound in the ibooks.
Fixed the sound where it would freeze the computer for 20 seconds when adjusting volume.
It also seems faster on both my machines.

I havent voted yet, so i couldnt get an indication of how many people were satisfied with it.
Loose the transparent dock?
Whats it replaced by?
Why would they make it a solid/opaque colour?

On second thoughts (after safari crashing again when i wanted to use the delete key) i think the update would be worth it even if it rendered my computer useless except for a working safari
I am SOOO fed up with this unstable, not liking delete or arrow keys safari. Who's with me?
That should be a poll
Who thinks safari is an unstable peice of crap and what lengths would you go through to obtain a stable version of it?
Unstable - would walk through hot coals and broken glass to get a stable version
...
...
...
...
Stable - its the best peice of software ever released!
and of course it would have to include:
i dont use safari because it sucks
i dont use safari because i have no desire to use it
i dont have a mac but just read mac polls for cheap thrills
by the way, i do realise i should send poll suggestions to that email address quoted before, but if you think that i am being serious you are really sad and dont talk to me.

Well, things SEEM a little snappier but I can't tell if it really IS snappier or if I've just bought into what everyone else is saying. Though I swear Safari seems to boot faster...

Apple didn't change anything. The transparent dock they mean is a hack, which removes the Dock background entirely. After 10.2.8, it looks "normal" again, breaking the hack.

I wonder how many people who had problems had hacks installed?
Repairing permissions seems to fix some of the issues.
As usual, everyone seems to have a different experience with an upgrade.
My Powerbook seems fine so far. I'll update my desktop system after a few days just to play it safe.

Transparent Dock killed my dock under 10.2.8. Do not use it! My dock is gone and trying to restore does nothing. I repeat, do NOT use 'Transparent Dock!'

And it is precisely because of transparent Dock I'll wait to install it. First I need to get a replacement backup drive as my old one accidentally got knocked over and now has major errors.
Once that's all backed up, I will Archive and Install and NOT preserve user and network settings so I can get a fresh Dock. Then I will combo update 10.2.8. Thank goodness cable internet is working. I installed transparent Dock on my machine awhile ago, and I'm glad many have realized it is buggy in response to 10.2.8.

hey that's happened to me, pressing the delete key on safari and it force quits on me... the first second time i rebooted, it seems to be going at normal speed, nothing faster nothing slower...

This is what happens when I press the delete key: I go back one page. I couldn't get my Safari to crash. What am I doing wrong? Actually, my Safari has been more stable than IE, or even the OS.

Safari is probably the most stable browser I've ever used. The number of problem sites I run into is negligible, and if it happens to crash, big whoop, it restarts in 2 seconds! 10.2.8 has done nothing noticeable for me, which is mostly good, because I wasn't having any significant problems in the first place, except:
Windows still refuse to come to the front when I click on them every once in awhile. Classic is pretty flaky, and I have screen refresh issues with some Classic apps, namely Quark. An os9 machine in my network can't access my puter, although the other one can (could be the os9 puter's problem). And, the "Hide Others" key command only works when it feels like it, that is to say, about 75% of the time.

For me on a PBTI 400,
A tad faster, fixed a burn problem with iPhoto. has not fixed a problem with external monitor resolution, Changes the resolution to 800 X 600 if the monitor power is off during start or wake up. It's like the OS forgets my settings and trys to detect resolution and defalts to the lowest setting.
have not experienced any other problems.

I know every poll has a "where's this choice?" but my first response on reading the poll was: "so far, so good."
On the plus side, I haven't had any problems, and maybe I do detect a slight increase in rendering menus from the Applications folder I've placed in my dock, but I also think that it will be a few days or even weeks before I've tried enough stuff to know what is really working or what problems there are.
I am, however, particularly worried about battery issues, which I've seen mentioned a lot. As a Ph.D. student working on an ethnographic study, I need 3+ hours of battery for field work every day. I have a new battery that was getting 3-4 hours (400Mhz TiBook), now it's saying 2:24 on a full charge. Yikes! Hopefully this will be addressed soon (or perhaps Panther will be here soon).

Seems fine to me. Boot times seem marginally improved, not that I do that often, but it stays on the initial gray screen less.
I've noticed that folding@home on the G3 is about 7 percent faster.
It has not corrected the FTP problem that was recently introduced. I can no longer connect to my websites using Adobe GoLive.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is surprized by your experience of Safari. Mine is that Safari is a remarkably stable browser. On a rare occasion I come across a page that doesn't render properly, but then I just launch Camino. For all of my primary browsing I use Safari, and I can't remember the last time it crashed.

Well. the update, I presume, restores the background images that the Dock uses. The question is, can they be set back to transparent...

I hope you get this since you aren't allowing PMs. There is a whole discussion about this topic on the http://discussions.info.apple.com/
A new battery only getting 2:24 is not a good sign. You may need to reset your power manager. Look up reset power manager on the http://www.apple.com/support/ page. You could also have a slightly frayed power adapter that just isn't getting the full charge into the battery causing a slow leak as it is trying to charge it. And sometimes the capacitor that handles the charge necessary for PRAM settings simply has worn out. Once exhausting all possible options, call http://www.powerbookresq.com/ as they may be able to fix your power manager to better satisfaction. Sometimes those just wear out.

After killing my G4/dual 450, the one with the wrong chip set on the ethernet card, I hacked my self back to life. I have little to say other than "watch it bubba" don't screw with the public. Amazing that Apple pulled the update with no comment. The least they could do is say "sorry" we'll be back! No fixes, no help. Good thing there are some smart users out there who know how to undo this mess Apple dished out to us unsuspecting users. This will be the last time I down load updates as they come.

Normally I am quick to do updates. Wasn't so with 10.2.8. Glad I did now. At first not many people were saying they had problems with the 17" imac (home machine) or for OS X server (after its updated was released).
Now I am hearing about problems with some imacs not rebooting and the OSX server listserve is jammed with msgs on the update topic. From the server side, most seem to be having lost network connection problems.
Either way, it seems like a 50/50 shot of it messing with a machine. I am going to wait it out. Not worth my time to have to fix a "fix." Now, if Apple would give me Panther for free, maybe....

Well, after factoring out those who didn't install or don't have OS X, 89.4% of those that say they installed it thought things were either the same or better afterwards. Unless people weren't being truthful in the poll then that seems to be the prevailing opinion. Thankfully, I'm among that 89.4% out there. :)
