I recieved an inquiry on my ebay auction for my macbook asking to get the serial number. Is this something I should give out? I know on apple's website you can enter a serial number to verify specs, but could anything negative be done with it? Any advice would be helpful as I have never done this before.
Thanks!

You should be fine to give your serial number.

Asking for a serial number helps the buyer validate:
A. That you may actually have a macbook.
B. Any remaining warranty.
C. If your macbook is under any special warranties (refurbished, excluding a previous liquid spilled logic board etc...).
You should be fine giving out the serial number.

Yes, give it to the buyer :)

unless you stole it and don't want the buyer to know about that, then you should be fine to give out the serial number. (The other reasons provided are valid as well).
If you don't provide the serial number, its very unlikely that you'll make the sale to that individual; they'll see it as being a bit 'shady' and go elsewhere.
They won't be able to do anything nefarious with it though; at the most, they'll be able to check warranty info, and look on some sites to see if it has been reported stolen (i.e. secondhandmac.com I believe has such a list).
