I was excitied when leopard came out.. I bought it on day one
I installed it on my Dual 2.0 Powermac G5, 3GB X800XT, after I did a backup
install went fine. I had some issues with my Sonnett Sata card with my other drives.. but they seems to be ok now.
But it seems like everyday photoshop freezes.. or safari.. or it hangs when booting.. or shutting down.. I get all sorts of random errors.. and app crashes.. overall much less stable when tiger. it makes me want to scrap Leopard and go back.... but leopard has some nice features and im just trying to bear with it.. until some real update get posted.. 10.5.1.. didnt really fix anything.
I have already done 3 fresh installs with leopard.
its the same at my work. where i have a 2.6 Mac Pro, with 4Gb,x1900 crashes here and there.. slowdowns... driving me crazy. until apple really puts some effort into updates.. I think Leopard sucks.
Guess i shouldnt have jumped the gun and installed it..

Sorry to hear that, but you have to remember when dealing w/ production machines that its never a good idea to early adopt. Many companies have not issued Leopard updates and wont untill later this year or Macworld.
That being said, I installed Leopard on my personal MacBook Pro and it works flawlessly. The only program(s) that had a hiccup was Adobe Creative Suite 3 which has been patched.
Hope your luck improves!

Yeah... I've had a few Leopard woes, but not enough to say it "sucks"
Seriously.
I mean, if you take a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being excellent and 1 being Vista... I'd rank Leopard right around a strong 8.

1 being vista! :D
Sorry to hear about your troubles; my leopard experience has been pretty much flawless except for a few gripes. Some software updates that require a restart have caused my computer to hang during the reboot and required me to hard power it down. Also my logitech keyboard causes kernel panics in leopard when i plug it in, which never happened in Tiger, now i've got to shell out some more money for a new keyboard grrr....

Here's what happened to mine.
When I installed Leopard less than a week ago, everything went smoothly. I was excited about it. But when I opened Final Cut Pro, my Mac Pro crashed. I have Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P card and Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extreme. I couldn't even get the second monitor working properly. I was forced to turn it off by pushing the power button. That was painful, worrying sick about possible video footage loss on my RAIDed hard drives.
Then I downloaded all the new versions of drives for both cards (because I hadn't earlier), but nothing worked. I ended up calling Blackmagic Design to consult and helped me reset the setting in FCP. Since then, Mac Pro hasn't crashed once.
However, I had troubled opening default Apple sites on Safari when it was fine on Firefox. It happened (more than once) when Mac Pro was still having trouble communicating with both cards. Also, iTunes couldn't locate the iTune Store because it thought there was no Internet connection when I surfed the Internet on Firefox with no problem.
Also, Coverflow in Finder didn't work properly. It loaded up nothing to look. At some moments, it may have caused Mac Pro to crash while accessing the files on the RAIDed hard drive.
Since then MS Excel quit once without warning. That was super weird.
Can't help, but apple did post a couple hundred leopard notes.
http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/
I went there and looked through for answers but never found one. I ended up calling Blackmagic Design and they helped me.
So, after all the agonizing few hours, with the help of Blackmagic Design, it's been fine. So far so good. Is this the price I have paid as an early adopter?
Cheers. :apple:

Oh yeah, I hear ya. My biggest problem with leopard is when you move something to the trash and then try to empty it you get the "Are you sure you want to empty it? You cannot undo this action!" dialog. This is most irritating.

New iMac 2.8 Extreme here:
1. Received the new iMac with Leo as a drop in.
2. Installed with no issues..period. Has been running perfectly!
3. Leo had all my printer and scanner drivers and had to do zero installs on any drivers.
Have you verified and repaired permissions for the DVD?
Have you used OnyX? Try it.....
Your issues are a lot more than you should be having! Any hacks or 3rd party software issues?
Bad RAM perhaps???
Hope some of this helps.

I would say we shouldn't blame Leopard for Safari 3 sucking. I've had problems with a couple of third party apps, nothing too important, but Safari 3 crashes, hangs, and generally suxxorz.

No issues here with leopard or safari 3.
Did you do a clean install or an archive and install? I've seen behavior like this with regular updates or archive and install while keeping user/network data.
It often comes down to changes in prefs formats or some other banal reason. Try creating a fresh user and see if the problems manifest with that new account too.

I have a very similar setup to the OP except mine is a dual 1.8 with only 2GB ram and the X800XT and I have had no problems at all.

Itīs allways pity that stuff doesnt work for people. Be it OSīs or HW.
BUT.
Since this is the MP forums and most users are power users or professionals.
If you work with your computer, you never, never, ever install a new OS on it untill it has been tested utterly through by other users.
That might take 2 or 3 updates or it might take 5.
It is such a basic rule that everybody that breaks it almost deserves to be kicked in the genitalia.
Hard.
All the pro systems with the programs and hardware allways lag behind in the compatability arena. Hell, some programs (pro tools?) work only up untill 10.4.8!
Iīm not gloating or laughing at your misery, but shees!
There were nothing so important in Leopard that you had to update to it.
Your system worked fine, your production flow was working so why break it?
Of course there are some nifty features but I could almost bet the budget of a small african country that they were not vital to your workflow?
Personally,I use my computer for my livelyhood and I am nowhere near updating the system from 10.4.11.
At least for next 4-6 months.
AND i allways have my backup system (atmold G4) ready to run in 5 mins just in case that my MP should meet a sudden demise.
Hopefully things work out for you,but when the next update, let alone a NEW operating system comes along, try to remember not to jump aboard on it right away.
If you have to,install it to your home machine or something.
Peace.

I'm a typical early adopter but my trust in apple has paid off. 10.5 Works Flawlessly on my old 17" CD iMac, My new 2.66 Mac Pro, My C2D MacBook My mums 20" C2D iMac and even my old Dual 450 G4. All of them were (erase & install) Clean installs except my mums iMac. My mums Boyfreind did manage to delete a load of work when he put it in a stack and then deleted the folder and emptied the trash. I did laugh!

Leopard is brilliant. I did a clean install as I always have done with any new version of OSX as any other method is just laziness and asking for trouble. I think you'll find most problems
and complaints are coming from people who did NOT do a clean install.
It runs on my dual 3Ghz 8 core MacPro (13gig ram ) with only minor problems, nothing that can't be avoided. Time Machine - great - have a 750 gig raid 1 sitting on top of my machine in a nice matching case. Stacks is lovely to behold and everthing works well and fast including Creative Suite CS3 with an occasional InDesign hiccup and a minor niggle in Photoshop.
Also have Leopard of my MacBook and my dual 2Ghz G5 (first model in the range)
Love it.

believe me or not, this is the first thread i view in macrumors after doing a fresh install of Leopard on my MBP. i upgraded tiger to leopard but i thought leopard should have been better that what it was. so today i installed it by fresh install. and if it is the same as before, i am more than happy with tiger.
but there is a thing, i went to two of the premium resellers (while leopard was installing itself) and saw their leopard wsnt so bad.
i hope it is gonna be the same with me.

Figured out the problem. He has the first round of Dual 2ghz G5 and what he had to do to install Leopard was take out the 3rd party ram and the install worked perfect, popped it back in after the install and its all good. Just some weird glitch with his system.

Weird. I did a clean install with the non Apple ram in and had no problems. Mind you I'm not using the machine much - scanning mostly - as I've now got a lovely very fast MacPro with 13 gig of ram - 12gig of which is non-Apple and works fine with Leopard.
Could be an urban myth spread by Apple to get you to buy their incredibly over-priced ram. You don't get billions of cash reserves being Mr nice guy. Though Apple are sweet little angels compared to Microsoft.

It's the smartest route in my opinion. Just because you have the newest version of Mac OS X doesn't mean it will be the most stable (10.5.0/10.5.1 and every other early version of every release of OS X)
Pro's shouldn't even touch Leopard (their work machines at least).
As the saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

As I rely almost totally on my Macs for my living (which is why I have about 5 different backup drives) I kept my old machine with 10.4 for a couple of weeks and then jumped in.
So I am now totally Leopard.
My wife still has 10.4 on her iMac, because I really haven't got time to . . . . . . you know - and it's working fine for her.

I just want to agree mostly with the OP. I've had a great deal of trouble with Leo myself. I won't repost it all again, but just a few minutes ago I posted in another forum on this same topic:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4592918#post4592918
I have several comments about it elsewhere - click on my name to read more.
"Sucks" is a bit strong, but I feel "Beta" is more appropriate.
It is usable really, but niggling issues abound!
Any advice on my "sleep" issue is appreciated.

No it's not. You happened to fare pretty well, but it doesn't mean that the advice is bad. Adobe didn't even say Leopard was supported until a bit later.
I don't care who the vendor is, you should want to test it out pretty well before committing to it.
It's worst if you decided to do it in the middle of a big project, then you'd be out of luck or have problematic delays if the upgrade caused problems.

Leopard and unfortunately Apple complete bites.
I've used Macs since Mac Plus. They used to be all about performance. Now they've sold out to the stock market on their computer platforms. They go for the profits with frequent OS upgrades at the expense of us, their loyal customers. I've bought just about every mac ever released. Leopard sucks!!! It's slow, it crashes constantly and if they are working on making things better, they're taking their sweet friggin' time about it. I've never been more sorry to upgrade. Love the features, like smart folders, cover flip, etc, but the expense to normal operation makes me really regret not waiting a little longer. I hope they fix it soon. I feel burnt.

What machine are you using it on? I've got Leopard on my Macbook (early model), on my Dual 2GHz G5 and on my Dual quad core 3GHz Macpro. Hasn't crashed once on any of them and I use them all day every day, and it actually seems to run faster.
I did a complete re-format and install - any other method is asking for trouble (That applies to all the all the versions of OSX not just Leopard)

I'm sick of apple's bs os, I'm writing this post on my mb pro with 10.5.3 installed and I just cannot shut down the machine since I installed 10.5.3 unless I do a hard shutdown or kill a bunch of processes from terminal first. The only machine I've not had any problems with is an older mbpro with ubnutu installed as the main os. Neither apple or microsoft are capable of making a decent operating system and they spend most of their money and energy trying to protect a pile of crab with patents, legal agreements and other bs. Let's us imagine a world without microsoft or apple: Very peaceful :)

Well you must obviously have some seriously badly written non-Apple crap running on your machine.
I've got a Macbook, a Macbook Air, a G5 iMac, a dual G5 Mac tower and a dual quad core MacPro and they are ALL running 10.5.3 with NO PROBLEMS at all. and my Apple Tv, my unlocked iPhone and 3 iPods are all very happy too.

Just to chime in on 10.5.3, I've updated about 6 machines of various specs. Macbooks, powermacs, ibooks, mac pro's, and imacs.
In one case, a powermac g5, it completely trashed the machine. It would hard lock on reboot without system.log or crash log entries. So there was no way to debug.
Yes, I did all the regular things to attempt to fix it. But without log entries my attempts were fairly general.
I had to do a complete reinstall. All the other machines went fine.

yeah, I didn't want to suggest that people not install 10.5.3. Sometimes updates go badly (with any OS..linux, windows, osx, you name it) and perhaps the above poster, like my powermac, is suffering from one of these rare instances.
It's really not a big issue, happens like once every couple of 100 times and all you have to do is reinstall and recover files from that daily backup that every sane computer user has. ;)

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member and read with interest the previous posts on this topic on Leopard.
Having been an OSX 10.4 user I upgraded to Leopard without any problems. That was 10.5.1. Then the update for 10.5.2 arrived via the Software Update, which I installed. Also no problem, but when 10.5.3 arrived in the Software Update, I installed it just as before, however this time it knocked my system, a Dual 1.8GHz (separate processors model) for "6"! After the update it would start up and the power supply just switched of while the gray Apple logo and spinning cog where on screen. To cut a long story short having removed and re-installed hardware, tried to re-install the software, but it still switched off while booting from the OSX CD, I discovered that the firmware had somehow become corrupted. I discovered this as I had also lost one of my PCI slots - slot 4. Pressing the SMU button and clearing PRAM helped, but did not restore the PCI slot detection and the card in it. I found the only solution was to remove the lithium battery and disconnected the power cord for about 2 hours. After refitting the battery and powering up, the PCI slot 4 was now OK and I manually downloaded 10.5.3 and installed it from the hard drive and it went in this time without a problem. So it would seem that it might be a better option for all those who suffer upgrade problems to do it this way instead of using the Software Upgrade option, which is fine for minor software upgrades which do not involve the OS.
Hope this helps

Yeah, you're basically a troll. Can we ban him right now and save ourselves the trouble of proving his unsubstantiated statements wrong, then having to deal with him typing IN ALL CAPS and flaming us as his/her defense.
By the way breckentroll. Anyone can say that they have this and that problem yadda yadda yadda, got some proof to back that up? Like a screen shot or an actual problem that you are trying to seek aid for?
And many here have used Ubuntu (it is a proper noun you know) and it's a great OS indeed, but since I can't run many of the industry required apps on it, Mac OS X is it. Once the Ubuntu community devos get off their @$$es to give me a professional level video editing application, I will jump ship okay.
