Alrite this is a rather stupid question....but in Microsoft word for windows....if your cursor is at the end of the line and you hold shift and press the home button it highlights all the way to the beginning of the sentence.
How do you do this on a mac??

Or hold down shift and hit home. If it goes to the beginning of the document, change the settings in the program to set home to beginning of the line.

Here are some shortcuts, at least for Cocoa programs, I dunno if they work in all OS X programs:
Option + Right/Left arrows = move insertion point by one word
Option + Up/Down = jump to beginning/end of paragraph, or move between paragraphs
Command + Right/Left = jump to beginning/end of line
Command + Up/Down = jump to beginning/end of document or text field
Hold down Shift with any of these, and it will select everything between the insertion point's current position and its new position, instead of just moving the insertion point.
Hope that made sense...
