While you're on the youtube page (using Safari) with the video you want, open the Activity window (Window > Activity).
In the list there should be one file that is a lot larger than the rest, double click to download it.
Once downloaded add .flv on to the end of the file.
You should be able to play the video in Quicktime.

I have followed your directions too, but when I try to open & play the file the Quicktime dialogue box give out the message 'The movie could not be opened'
and 'The file is not a movie file'.

Ah it's probably because I have the Perian (http://perian.org/) codec pack installed. Try installing that and see if it works then.
Otherwise VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) seems to play FLV files as well, though it seems to mess up if you try to skip to a different part of the video.

Thank you very much.
Now it works.

Thanks for the info! I don't normally use Safari, but I can see me opening youtubes in Safari from now on.
Sure beats the 3rd party website I was using before (and no, I don't remember it offhand, and can't find it in my many nested bookmarks in Firefox  )

You could also install the latest version of RealPlayer. It comes with a downloader and lets you save most streamed video feeds like YouTube as you watch them.

Right. All of the above will work, but they are awkward.
www.keepvid.com (http://www.keepvid.com)
Enter in the YouTube URL. It generates the download code. You click on it and download.
Simple

VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) or you can convert them with iSquint (http://www.isquint.org/)

Just download VLC then open the .flv file with it. Plays it fine.
Kinda like the only media player you will ever need.

If you want them in windows media file (god knows why) then i think you will need to buy Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_studio.htm). As to converting into a .avi I have no idea, but iSquint will convert them into a .mp4
Visualhub (http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/buyit.php) may be able to convert to both .wmv and .avi but I don't know.
But VLC plays them fine and a .mp4 will work in iTunes, iPod, iPhone, AppleTV, Windows etc.

The way I do it is to use keepvid.com to download the flv, then use isquint (free and very easy to use, not to mention full of Easter eggs to keep you amused) to convert it to MP4 (from there it automatically adds it to my AppleTV - very sexy, but that's another story.)

this Get Tube thing is taking too long, could it be my conexion?????
I've used a firefox plug in to download a couple of youtube videos and they have worked fine with iSquint for conversion, but some of them just simply don't work, or iSquint can not convert...
this is the log error I get...
