I'm getting the blue (or is it grey? My brightness is all the way down and I can't tell) screen with the spinning progress circle and I'm about to have a heart attack.

I was downloading the firmware update when it said there was an error and it couldn't finish. It said the package was moved to the trash, where I went to delete it. The trash screen would not clear so I clicked on a few apps to see if the computer was frozen... the icons would jump once and not open. So I tried to restart it but it said it couldn't because the trash was clearing. So I tried a hard restart. But when I booted it up, it wouldn't start... I've been getting the blue screen for a while and shut it down, started it back up, got the screen, over and over and over...

First off, WHAT DO I DO TO GET IT TO BOOT UP AGAIN?
Secondly, if I reinstall Mac OS X (10.4.8 from the install disk), am I going to lose all my documents and things? Because I don't have an external hard drive or backup system and ALL of my class notes/documents, pictures, etc. are on this computer... if I lose it all, I'm going to lose it.
Third, can I still back up at this point? Because I will buy an external HD ASAP if I still have that option.

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!

p.s., what terrible luck - my birthday is in 4 hours and my lifeline is presumably in a coma.
