Hey
The Apple site says the 24 inch iMac uses 280 watts of power. Is that right? Seems quite high, yes?
http://www.apple.com/uk/imac/specs.html#specs
Maximum continuous power: 200W (20-inch models); 280W (24-inch model)

That's maximum. We are talking full-bore, fans a blazin', maxed out CPU/GPU, hard disk whirring, DVD burning, full screen brightness nightmare. Most users will never see that. More likely around 100W for normal use, maybe up to 150W in gaming.

Ah, many thanks for the explanation

Quite high? But it also powers the LCD remember? So a 200W power supply is very very little no?

I have an APC H-Type H15BLK voltage regulator on my audio equipment, which I hooked up my iMac to for a little while, average use is about 130-180 watts (mostly 160w), with display off 85-90w idle, startup peaks a little bit over 220w (or maybe 260) something around there. All those numbers aren't exact, they are just a guess of what I remember them being, I can find out the exact numbers later.
