It's a power supply extension cable.
It plugs into this (http://www.gadgetspage.com/wp-content/uploads/p1080119.jpg): instead of the plug adapter that comes attached to it.

thats already plugged into a tower!!!
Speaking of which, do apple displays have multiple inputs ? my dell 24inch does, wondering if the ACD's do too

No, the Apple Cinema Displays have just DVI in, as well as (non video ports) 2 USB and 2 FW400.
The 2" DVI cable is a DVI-VGA adapter, and is an... ADAPTER, so you plug your VGA cable into that, or a DVI cable directly into the MacBook Pro.

yeah i can figure that much out :p
however the ACD single input is a major downfall :eek:
