View Full Version : PowerMac G5s Trickling In

MacRumors
Sep 25, 2003, 02:46 AM
Users are starting to report significant shipments of PowerMac G5 2.0GHz machines. Many have received them, and others note that Apple Stores have already started receiving them.

Both the Apple Store at The Grove in Los Angeles, CA as well as the Stanford Bookstore have had shipments in which were available to the general public.

Boy. Too bad mine and maaaaany other people had their orders (some completely stock, some CTO; some consumer, some Edu. Institution) got theirs delayed for more than a MONTH - from 9/23 to 10/29!! Orders placed right after the keynote!

Somewhere in Apple for some unknown reason, certain orders are getting the SHAFT. =(

Good news. I certainly hope the people who pre-ordered them got them before those stores which are offering them to the general public got them. I would be really irked if I had plopped down three grand 3 months early just to get some joe shmoe walk into an apple store and pick one up.

At the apple Australia store it says 1-2 days for 1.6ghz but their are still people waiting from over two months ago:(

Not me luckily as I ordered my 1.6 at the same time as my pbook 1.25 but I dont expect it in less than 2 weeks.

There's a fan blowing on me because it's a warm day and the lights are so hot- and I'm so excited about finally getting the G5 after a 3 month wait!

Opening it was really fun- most fun I've ever had opening a box, I think!

Just got my new, 2 GHz, G5 w/the radeon 9800. Ram is arriving tomorrow to go up to 2.5Gig. New 23" display should be arriving next week (have 17" now).

Installed Indesing, Photoshop, Acrobat pro and Illustrator. Did some testing on Photoshop start up time (only 512MB ram in the G5 right now). Compared it to a 733Mhz G4, 768MB ram. Oh, and did not install the Photoshop G5 advanced plugin. Both machines had Photoshop installed exactly the same as well.

G4 - 12 sec.
G5 - 8 sec

I know this doesn't say much, but I just had to get a feel for it. Can't wait to play more. I will try to post some comparable numbers opening actual files later.

However, aftering seeing Genie's pics, my G5 just doesn't seem quite as sexy now. ;)

I don't think she did max it out to 8GB ram. The ram from her pictures is from Crucial.com. They do not have 1GB ram for the G5 - yet. I just ordered my ram today and it was not available. I could be wrong - Genie?

I searched all over the net for 1GB ram modules. Difficult to find and very $$$. 2.5GB is good enough for me, right now.

Well "shipping" is a bit of a joke here in Europe.

I'm based in the UK near London and my Dual G5 "shipped" on Monday (22nd). Unfortunately, I decided to get Apple Care at the same time and that means that the machine that was built in Cork, Ireland has to go all the way to Luxembourg to be "merged" with the Apple Care. It is then sent back to me.

At the moment, Apple tell me that it's in Luxembourg being "merged" and that I should get it next Monday! 7 days, just because I wanted something that is intangible! I wouldn't mind if it was picking up an essential component but APP is just a piece of paper surely!

Ugh! I will never buy a machine and other components from the Apple store again. After 3 months (yes mine was 6/23 order) of waiting, I'm having to go through this now! Never again, I have sworn no more pre-orders and certainly no machine + other bits from the Apple store. Machine on it's own from now on and only if I want a CTO.

Sounds like a comedic farce more like :)

What concerns me most, though, is the amount of unecessary vibration the unit is receiving during all this. It cannot do it any good, no matter how good the packaging is.

The whole thing is just stupid!

Seems tight getting the hands in there for adding RAM. I'd imagine the same thing for PCI cards.

Of course, I'm used to a beige G3 minitower and those were the best for accessing the boards easily...

i was the 23rd person to order one in Miami at the Falls Apple Store ( i know because my G5 card had a 23 on it)... i got mine two days ago.

I'm a convert from PC to an apple, and it couldn't be going smoother. All my apps open three times as fast and i'm loving the integration between all the iApps. My iSight rocks and everything is really cool with the computer.

Can't wait to really start workign off this machine!!!

it was the biggest suprise to get it thsi early; my estimated shipping was Oct 7, and i got it Sep 22.

Stanford got 40 2.0's in on Tuesday. They weren't pre-ordered, but you need a Stanford ID to buy one.

The Apple Store in Palo Alto called me late Tuesday to say mine was in. I'd gotten on their list in July.

By the way: I bought a 1.8 at the Apple Store in Palo Alto a few weeks ago. It comes with a 30-day 100% money-back privilege, so since I really needed one then & my 2.0 wasn't in yet the salesperson kindly suggested I do that & return it when the 2.0 came in.

Observations:
a) the 2.0 definitely feels faster. I wasn't sure it would on everyday apps, but it does. Loading my 8000 photos to iPhoto is several seconds faster; scrolling around them is noticably better. I used 2.5G ram in both machines.

b) the 2.0 seems quieter. hmm.

c) the 2.0's a whole lot more likely to kick up the fans when things are going on. The 1.8 seemed just to hum along at some mid-level of noise.

d) when working in the evening & my girlfriend's sleeping, using the Energy Saver option to lower the performance definitely lowers the noise level to a beautiful soft hum.

e) if I'm editing in word or on the web, I've been leaving the Reduced Performance option on. It doesn't seem to impact anything and keeps the machine whisper quiet.

edit: more thoughts

I was supposed to get mine in this week from PC Connection. It was a build to order dualie with 512mb ram, 9800 ATI, and dual 250gb drives. Apple then without any information pushed back my order without any date given. I think the BTO's were pushed back even longer. I ordered mine july 11th. Also my PC's harddrive just died last night. APPLE COME TO THE RESCUE! I WANT TO BE A SWITCHER TO MAC AND CAN"T DO IT WITHOUT MY DUALIE....

Does anyone else like the startup noise the G5 makes? I was talking to my girlfriend over the phone last week and heard this sound like a sports car (vrrrm vrrrm). It turned out she was starting up her 2x2 G5.

Strange, she got a big kick out of opening her box also.

My first Mac... I'm still waiting, ordered 6/25 but doesn't seem to matter. What I heard from Apple is they are trying to push them out this week as fast as possible because of year end. I'm probably not getting much attention, since I ordered mine through ADC student program. Saved me $600, but I'm sure they are going to ship the $3k orders before mine.

I remember when I ordered by BTO TiBook the first day Steve announced it. My BTO took almost a month longer than the stock TiBooks to ship. Apple really needs to speed this process up like Dell does. Dell BTO's ship in about two days. What's up with that?

Plus I think it's a problem throughout the Apple business. Everytime I walk into the SoHo Apple Store, there are about 30 Apple employees helping people out. However, there's only 3 employees at the registers and about 30 people waiting in line! This is a perfect example of how Apple operates. High in the selling, low on the execution.

From the FedEx tracking site:

"Sep 25, 2003__ 2:47 am On FedEx vehicle for delivery_PORTLAND, OR"

I'm going to be insufferable until that truck gets here... :-)

What was REALLY frustrating was that I ordered the G5 2x2 on October 1, along with a Cinema HD. The display got here two days later, and has been sitting here on my desk, BLANK, because my G4/400 won't drive it, even with the Apple DVI-ADC adaptor. (It took hours of searching the Apple website to find out why it wasn't working -- ATI Rage 128 Pro doesn't have enough VRAM to drive it...)

I just recently ordered my g5, and have another month to go till the estimated ship date :-\ god im going nuts. Luckily I got the next day, because if i knew that thing was done, and just out there traveling around the country on a truck for 5 days, i'd have an aneurism.

also...

does it suck apple isn't filling pre-orders and instead is filling stores and schools? yes it does. but it is smart.

You're going to wait for the one you ordered, you will, you have no choice, you aren't going to cancel it, no matter how many times you say you are.

So they have you getting one, and now people in the stores getting one. easy way to fill more people in about the same time. Good business? yeah. bad for the consumer, terrible.

I got my home machine last week, a dual 2 GHz (ordered the day of the keynote)

It's very nice, and spends much of its time running at the quietest setting. It is kinda interesting to know when you're taxing it as the fans start spinning faster. For example, I was thinking about something and happened to have a text selection and was idly expanding and contracting it with the mouse. Slowly the fans spun up to a slightly higher speed. I stopped and said something like "oops, sorry...".

The machine is very fast. Some things you might expect to be CPU intensive, like UT2003, don't seem to tax it at all -- the fans mostly run at the lowest setting, or the next one above. I guess the graphics card is doing most of the work.

BUT, if you want hear how loud it *can* be, try running the Apple hardware diagnostics. It turns on all fans at full speed, and the machine sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

On the ordering/delevery front, I also ordered another one for work (ordered a few days after the keynote), and that one hasn't shown up yet, and just got pushed back to "On or before 10/29".

[I had thought it was 09/29 when I posted, but now I see it's 10/29.]

Mine shipped on the 23rd according to UK Applestore, however, like others on this forum, because I ordered a few other things at the same time (Display, iSight, etc) - the machine itself is stuck in some depot waiting to be joined by the other items! These, according to my tracking page, have been in Holland for two days just sitting there - whilst the G5 sits in a UK depot near Heathrow. The carriers just tell me that its Apple I should contact, whilst Apple UK simply dont answer emails (phoning is difficult from work).

Never again will I purchase direct from Applestore UK - the simple art of logistics has passed them by - next day delivery hasnt quite reached these backward parts and the great art of customer care is sadly lacking too.

At the moment you can't really find them anywhere but on the Apple Store. But then that delays your orders.... especially on the new PBs. Everyone is also complaining about those 1GB sticks price on the Apple store, but then again it's the only way to get them. And in that respect, the prices are not that ridiculous...

I have two sticks of 1GB density RAM sitting on my desk right now. I received them one month ago, in anticipation of an 8/29 ship date on my Dual G5.

I got them from DataMem.com (http://www.datamem.com/viewitems.asp?C=1125&D=Apple%5FMac%5FMemory&K=) (2GB kit, DM50 613x2). They have the best price I have seen.

My machine, ordered immediately when Apple's website went live after the keynote (with 9800 card and 1x250GB drive), is still estimated to ship 9/29. I hope it doesn't get bumped again.

There are definetly Mac OS update coupons in the G5 boxes. However, it does not say if they are good for updates/upgrades to Panther. Since this is my first Mac I'm not sure what it means. I'll try to attach a picture of the coupon shortly. Actually there are 3 coupons label 1,2, and 3.

Regards,

Genie

Sorry Genie I should have been more specific:

It's a single sheet of coupons in with the setup guide package.

Setup Guide
Apple Stickers
Apple Care Advertisement
license agreement
1 year warranty info
AND IMPORTANT APPLE Software PROOF-Of-PURCHASE Coupons

So make sure to look in your paperwork package.

Regards,

Just had a look and boy is that the most vague coupon I've ever seen. Intentionally vague, I think...
Nobody seems to know when Panther will come out, even at Apple.

Me thinks they're going to make us pay full price for Panther.

I friggin order August 1 and the ship date has remained the same the entire time - Oct. 14. I upgraded to 10.2.8 on my ibook and it started crashing and now doesn't start and still people are getting their G5's before me. It's really quite bothersome. I'm about ready to cancel my developer order and go to the Apple Store at Lenox and get whatever the hell they have. It's really annoying.....

Oh, and at least in my luck, I ordered as a student developer and after a call I was told that there was no way to expedite my order regardless of the whole student thing and the STUDENT developer discount..... what a drag. Anyone else need to gripe?

Since I don't have my .mac website setup here's my single picture offering of my new Mac. I think Genie was a much better subject beside her new Mac than most of us anyway! I was trying to figure out if I was envious of Genie cause she had her Mac or of her Mac because it had her...Ohh nevermind ;) lol

Anyway I thought this was an interesting picture of my new Mac beside my Sun Ultra 60 and my Dell D600. Notice it makes the Ultra 60 look kinda small. Of course that is mainly because the handles are very large on the G5.

You should be able to find someone to get you one before Oct 14- that's a little long-

That would almost make you want to wait for Rev b in February...

Almost certainly. Maybe when a release date for Panther is officially announced, systems bought afterwards will get a free upgrade, but that's the most I'd expect. This is just Apple soaking the early adopters, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yeah, it looks like the 1G sticks are rare enough to be expensive. The prices will drop over the next few months.

Datamem's price is half of what I've seen from anyone else who even has the part. (Crucial and Kingston don't!)

Of course, I haven't been able to test whether my 2Gigs actually works! Hopefully, my machine will ship tomorrow or Monday, so I can find out.

and ya know, it is the damnedest thing, i keep checking my status on the apple store, just about every half hour, and it just doesn't seem to change, it keeps on 'on or before oct 24th', i figured if i checked it enough, maybe it'd magically jump up...sigh...

well, they're shipping now, which is good. but I'm still very dissappointed with how slowly they shipped. This is WAY after August.
I was planning on buying a Dual 2 at the end of August, but now that I haven't been able to get one and I know i won't be able to get one for another while, I think I'll wait until MacWorldSF and see if they update the line.

eh, luckily i dont live in the uk, so i dont know. :D

but the rest of the posts on here haven't been too favorable towards the apple store uk, many saying that their stuff takes longer to ship, and if you track it, the things being sent all over the uk to finally recieve it or something like that. But like i said, i have no experience, so i'm not 100% positive

I ordered my dual CTO on June 26th and I am still waiting for it to ship over 3 months later. There'll be no joy left when I finally receive it. Why does Apple LIE to its customers so much? Last time I'll ever pre-order.

Sep 26, 2003, 12:13 PM
that brings up a question, of those people who ordered, and are receiving their pre-orders early, are they standard or cto? maybe they're pushing out the standard pre-orders quickly, and making the rest of us with cto wait. anyone?

If you order bluetooth on a cto (Like I did) the bluetooth module is internal on the motherboard...and cannot be added after production. It has to do with the aluminium case there is an antenna that ports to the back tower case to get the signal out of the box. You can use a usb dongle.. but I wanted to keep in clean and have it integrated... I would say for me it was worth the wait... .but then I again my 2.0 came last week.....:) they were three days early in relation to the second est. ship date I don't think bluetooth will hold up your order:)

i found them at macwarehouse kingston for 269.95 and poweruser for 199.95 in stock, and at page computers on the nextag search the kingston was much cheaper then macwarehouse...i think 249. and they are in stock. My apple store didn't have any in stock.

i ordered mine on aug 22, and it arrived today but i had to send it back because i bought one at the store last night. I can't imagine why people haven't gotten them for such old orders..oh well..

512 ram is 139.95 for kingston at macwarehouse
and 119.95 for power user..

Apple charges 1300 bucks for 2 gigs..and you don't even know where it comes from...I guess that's how they make the money cause they are giving the computers away...I remember paying 4000 bucks for an se-30 with a 7 inch b/w monitor with an 80 meg hd and 6 megs of ram...

this machine would be worth 100,000 buck 13 years ago

Yes, that's what I heard and why I called it a startup noise instead of startup sound.

BTW. Re 1GB RAM. Are you sure that the prices you quoted for a single 1GB RAM module and not 1GB kit (2x512MB)? The prices seem more for kit RAM than single sticks. Much RAM is sold in "kit" form so that overclockers in the PC world have an easier time adjusting the timings for dual channel RAM.

If that is the case, may I suggest Corsair RAM (http://www.corsairmicro.com/)? (Not the new Pro stuff though unless you like blinking lights.)

After seeing that someone else on this board picked up a Dual G5 from the Apple Store at Woodfield Mall, I decided to do the same, since the stock model I ordered on 8/1 was still showing a ship date of 'on or before 10/24'.

My first impressions are that it is very fast (although I was previously using a 466MHz G4), that it is very quiet (although the HDs in my old machine were rather noisy), and that is very heavy (at least while carrying one up two flights of stairs). Even when the fans blow, it's still quieter (or at least more pleasing) than the whines coming from my old G4.

To anyone in the Chicagoland area who is waiting for a non-custom dual that they ordered on-line many moons ago, I would recommend calling the Woodfield or Michigan Ave. stores to reserve one (assuming they still have some left) and cancelling your on-line order. However, they will only hold one for the duration of the day, so you've got to be able to get to the store that day.

Too bad that I ordered mine (std dual config) on 9/15/03 (I got the same 10/21/03 ship date) and it still hasn't shipped. The Apple Store at the Mall of America had several in stock, but I can't get the Apple Developer Connection discount there. Rawr. It hopefully should show up soon, especially because the Apple Store now lists it as a 7-10 day wait on new orders. Oh, and the Shipping Method on my order has changed from 'Priority Overnight' to 'Two Day' to 'Bestway' whatever that means.

It varies but is between 10-20% off. It's no big secret as Apple publishes the prices (http://developer.apple.com/membership/hardware.html): As you can see, you can save $600 on the top-of-the-line G5.

However, in order to qualify, you must be either a Select (http://developer.apple.com/membership/select.html) ($500/year) or Premiere (http://developer.apple.com/membership/premier.html) ($3500/year) or student (http://developer.apple.com/students/) ($100/year) member and you may not be the highest on the priority list (the idea is that Premiere members would be purchasing old inventory for compatibility testing and the like). The last one is quite the deal and I wish I took advantage of that back in the day.

Aye. That is the only way for us poor students working during the summer and during the semester. The days are getting much longer as 10-14 approaches. Got a Dual 2.0 512, 9800 and Combo drive for $2668 or so after taxes. Not too shabby.

On 6/23, as soon as Apple's website goes live, I place an order for a CTO dual 2GHz G5. As customization, I ask for the Radeon 9800 card, and a 250GB drive.

A few days later, the website estimates the shipping date as 8/29.

In anticipation of the 8/29 date, I order two 1GB sticks of RAM (for a total of 2GB). They arrive on 8/28. Everything is ready.

On the morning of 8/29, I awake to find the date bumped to 9/29. The evening before, 8/29 was still displayed.

Today is 9/29. This morning, the ship date is still 9/29. Before lunch: 9/29. I eagerly await my FedEx tracking number!

After lunch, the date has been bumped to 10/14!

I call Apple, and wait on hold for 15 minutes to find out what has happened to my computer. The sales rep, while feeling my pain, offers no help (not even offering to pick up the tab on the FedEx overnight shipping, which, back on 6/23, I thought was well worth the extra cost).

Will I get my machine on or before 10/14? No one knows.

I would be less upset if Apple updated the shipping estimates as soon as they know they will not hit the target. Apple's manufacturing must know days, or even weeks, in advance that they will miss the target. Yet, customers are treated to a wonderful "surprise" on the shipping date, learning that they have, once again, been screwed!

Mine shipped today.

Dual 2GHz
DVD/CD-RW Combo
Radeon 9600 Pro
512 MB RAM

It's fast, looks really cool (although it is huge!) and is really quite. Love it already! :)

No, I called. The sales rep had access to the manufacturing database. He said that, while the order has been "released to manufacturing", he could not guarantee that it would be shipped by 10/14.

You asked before, and I answered: datamem.com. On the positive side, they shipped the RAM the morning after I ordered it!

Actually I got my G5 about 10 days ago. Just got inspired with the song later, so thought I'd share it. Would have been more timely a few weeks back, but my kids & I had fun singing the new wsords along with the original (my first 99 cent purchase at iTMS!).

Apple charges 1300 bucks for 2 gigs..and you don't even know where it comes from...I guess that's how they make the money cause they are giving the computers away...

I still stick by my original comment that it sounds like you are quoting matched pair 2x512MB = 1GB prices. However, the prices aren't as bad as I thought. For instance, OWC sells 2x1GB for $700 (http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_XLR8YourMac.cfm?ID=6077&Item=OWC3200DDR2GBPKIT) with lifetime replacement warrantee which isn't too bad a premium. I can't comment on the quality, but a simple web search should yield a lot of information on OtherWorld Computing since they've been in the Mac biz for a while.

Therefore the $1300 from Apple is on the high side, but that is true anytime you go to a vendor, go to Dell's site if you don't believe me. I'd trust Apple's quality more than your regular vendor, however, as a flakey RAM module severely destroys your computing experience (it creates a slow corruption of the operating system that may take months before it materializes in a kernel crash or whatever). In the PC world people would be hard to separate such flakiness from the fragility of Windows updates.

That's from firsthand experience. AppleCare entitled my computer to run on the bench at AppleStore for free. The problem turned out to be some cheap 3rd party RAM I purchased. Nowadays I run memtest (http://friskythecat.tripod.com/) in single user mode. It's a port to the tried-and-true memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) from the PC world.

(BTW, if you want to be thorough you should mix memory modules and run memtest again because it can't test lowram or high ram effectively.)

Take care,

Not really, considering they're the new kids on the block. If you're questioning why someone would buy a 1GB stick over two 512MB sticks, it's because they want to max out their RAM at either 4GB or 8GB (1.6GHz model for former and 1.8/Dual 2GHz for latter).

exactly, that's why I would be willing to go the 700 for the 2x1gb, maybe not maxing it out now, but in a little while if i want to, i'd rather not have to just throw out the 2x512mb to fit the 1 gb ones. in the long run, if that's the plan, the 700 isn't too terrible. especially against apples price.

If you're referring to the "estimated ship time" when you place a Dual 2GHz G5 in your shopping cart on the Apple store, don't go by that. It constantly changes (i.e. one week it was 7-10 weeks, then 4-6 weeks, then 5-10 business days, and then back to 4-6 weeks).

Ignore the whining.

You can order a G5 from MacConnection, MacZone, or Outpost.com, and they will ship it the same day. Overnight, if you're really in a hurry. You can walk into CompUSA and walk out with any of the G5s except the dual. You can walk into Fry's and walk out with any of the G5s including the dual. Ditto the Apple retail stores.

I don't know what more anyone could ask for.

Of course the people (like me) who ordered G5s before they were in production had to wait a lot longer. Is that surprising?

first off, i ordered mine sept 18th, which is 3 full months after they had been shown at the keynote, and I have to wait over a month to receive mine, which is kind of ridiculous to begin with, but ok i'll wait, but look at the amount of people who ordered much earlier that still don't have it.

Yes you can go anywhere and get a non dual 2ghtz g5 , but this thread has been 90+% dual 2.0ghz i'd say, so that's the complaining or "whining" as you put it, that he's been hearing. Also, the problem, obviously is with cto 2ghz g5's, you can pick up a stock one at many places, and most apple stores have them in stock, but explain to me how putting in a 9800 card, and a couple sticks of ram should push that back a month. so that there is suprising. and in my opinion reason for a little "whining"

Ask your car dealer how long it takes to order a new car from the factory. Talk to the people who ordered PT Cruisers before they were in production. Ask Boeing how long it takes to build a 747.

Life doesn't always offer instant gratification, as much as might desire it. Not everything comes out of vending machines like soda -- and even soda machines run empty from time to time.

Maybe Apple can't wish 9800 cards into being and has to wait for its suppliers? No, you're right, that's much too logical. It's much more likely that Apple has plenty of parts on hand and just won't ship them because 1) they're evil, 2) they don't like making money, and 3) their evil is directly specifically at you.

well, in my opinion, apple has many custom pre-orders. Those people are going to wait for it. They may complain, but when it gets there, it all wont matter anymore to them. So wouldn't it make sense then to have them wait for it, which they will, and put more effort into making stock ones which can be sold much easier and at more places? i'd guess 5 out of every 100 might cancell a pre-order after having to wait a while, so there's 4k+ a person, why not get it out there and make another 3k per computer that's sold stock. It would make sense, I'm not saying it's what they do, but it'd help raise more computers i'd say

also, guess what. I have $5,000 + tied up in the apple store right now, as I paid by check, I dont have that money, it's already been drafted, so until I get my computer I feel I might have a little reason to complain. as far as I know, until your post I hadn't said one thing like "oh apples screwing us and just making us wait" i've merely stated how much it has sucked to have to wait. which it does...obviously. whether it's warranted or not.

also, have you heard about shortages of the 9800 card? a lot of times you see something about that somewhere, I haven't heard anything yet, so maybe that's not it.

I do wonder why people who are in a hurry to get their machines ordered a custom configuration. Common sense should have told that customization would likely slow things down.

Most of the custom options -- increased RAM and disk space, Bluetooth connectivity -- can be added easily. The upgraded graphics card is the only option not currently available from third parties, but the 9800 offers only a small performance increase of interest mostly to gamers. For pro applications, there will soon be pro cards available with greatly improved performance.

Well, that is a concern if you need the money. Of course, if you need the money for something else, you shouldn't have used it to buy a computer. And while you chose to pay by check, Apple does not require that. You could have applied for Apple Credit and not had any payments or interest until 2004 -- long after your computer arrives.

You do know that the AGP 8X Radeon 9800 for Macintosh is currently manufactured for (and only available with) the G5, don't you? The evidence is right there in those reports you have from Apple.

Of course, if you prefer to believe in a conspiracy....

I'm still waiting for mine through local Apple Reseller. Order 2 GHZ Dual w/ 9800 and BT added. Paid for in check July 25.
Reseller got their first box revceived on Monday, and it showed up without any pre-notice from Apple. Reseller tells me I have 8 or 9 people in front of me.

Dang it this really does sux.

Also does anyone know a valid email address for someone in Apple management (NOT Apple Store) that I can write to?

It's a CTO, added bluetooth to it and removed the modem (who needs a modem when you have a cell phone with bluetooth?). I ordered it Sep. 13 and it was est. to ship on or before 10/21/03. I should have it by tuesday! ::drool::

hrm, then this gives me hope. only thing that could be a problem is if the 9800 cards are scarce, cause other than that i got most of the same stuff you got, and im sure they have ram and harddrives in stock. now just hope yours comes with panther preinstalled, i couldn't really imagine it would, being before its released in stores, but who knows. atleast it's only $20 for ya

Or if you are a developer like me I'll get Panther in their mailling. My G5 was also only $2416(b4 tax). Thats 20% off. Now thats a discount! Then again, the price for being a devloper is far more than the amount I saved. Ouch.

Its $500 a year. I'm not shelling out 3gs for the top membership. I get the hardware discount every time I renew(can only be used to buy one item). As for if I make that much programming, let's just say I'm not really the one picking up the developer membership tab. ;)

I know this is pretty much a dead topic, but I just thought I'd announce that I got my shipping notification today a whole 9 days ahead of schedual in the "Apple order status" page. So that makes me really happy :-) I just wonder if it will have that new operating system thing on it or if I will have to pay for the 20 dollar s&h upgrade... Considering it will get here on about the 25th :-/ Kinda makes me wish they hadnt shipped it ahead of schedual.. not that 20 dollars is much.. more of the idea of having to upgrade it soon after I get it. I would have perfered a clean install... Do any of you know if an Upgrade is slower then a plain clean install?

i have been asking everyone, but lucky you. but did you get the 9800 pro card? that's definately what's holding me up, and it kinda sucks seeing everyone get theirs early, mine still says the same ship date, and i dont have a good feeling about it, i have a feeling it's going to take longer

Wohoooo first post

Howyiz folks

Took delivery of mine 2 weeks ago, took it out (the G5 that is) for a few hours then put it away again (house renovations) but I've been giving it welly this week and I have to say it's a beast and the 20" cinema screen is a joy to work with, pi$$es all over 1.25 Dual G4 I have in the office plus the whole aesthetics, soooo nice, though was using it last night around 12.30am and I could hear the chirping whirring cricket sound in the box but hey it's a G5 and my first *new* mac at home, I can live with it.

How do you know the 9800 is holding up your order? I got that on my order too and I'm still waiting for my shipment through local Apple reseller, but I thought it was the reseller channel going slow, not the 9800 builds.

well, i dont actually "know" anything about it. i should have just said i assume. because from this post, alot of the people who have gotten their g5's early, didn't have the 9800 card, and as someone was so nice to point out in here, the card is only made for macs, for the g5's right now, so I just figure. Because a lot of the other people seem to have the same configurations as mine, just minus the 9800 card. Mine is scheduled to ship this friday, and i haven't gotten any advanced word, so hopefully it ships then, though im not overly confident :(

You didn't say but I'm assuming you ordered direct through apple store? If so then that leaves my theory out in the wind that only resellers are behind now. nope, any g5 is entitled to the $20 upgrade. Everyone reguardless of date ordered or date recieved. It's any other computer ordered after that date that gets it, but all g5's do I'm pretty sure.

For Power Mac G5 systems
Customers who purchase a qualifying new Power Mac G5 (M9020LL/A, M9031LL/A, M9032LL/A) regardless of purchase date that does not have Mac OS X Panther v10.3 included can upgrade to Mac OS X Panther.

Your G5 web order being placed on Sept 18 and delivered on Oct 22 is a prime example of something being wrong at Apple.

I finally picked up my Dual G5 and 20in display last night 11/7/2003. (Ordered and paid for on July 23, 03 at local IAD)

First what a sweet sweet machine and overall design and oh yeah THE SPEED ...awesome.

Now for my bitching...

1) It didn't come with 9800 nor BT as Apple found a conflict between the two recently (was told first batches of G5s didn't have this problem) I'll have to take the box back in a week or so to get 9800 and B/T installed.

2) It didn't come with 10.3 installed (only 10.2.8) Guess I'll have to go through Apple's Up to Date and pay extra $20, which kinda sucks, since 10.3 came out before mine was built.

Sweet news is I got an extra 512 MB RAM for no charge by the IAD that Apple so poorly supports now.
