Im trying to write a midterm paper and I've noticed that while running microsoft word 2004 with 4 open documents, safari with 8 tabbed pages, and dictionary, the dictionary takes at least 10 seconds to load a page. I've tried turning off the Wikipedia function because I figured that could slow things down, but my problem did not cease.

I'm working on a 2.4 core2duo MBP with 2gb ram. This problem did not occur in Tiger.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with Dictionary?
Is this just a bug that will be fixed in a future update?

Dictionary is very fast on my Macbook even if i turn on wikipedia it is still just as fast.

Well, I was getting slow responses from Dictionary at one point but that was because I was running Second Life which steals nearly all system resources.
But for goodness sake, you have 8 tabs open and several documents with only 2GB of ram, that might be your culprit. Tabs eat up a lot of ram and you must take into account that the system uses at 512-1GB to run Leopard. That being said, I do believe that Dictionary may require more resources because of all it's new functionality.

when opening Activity Monitor it says that Safari is using 345 MB and Word 140 MB...

Is that an abnormally large amount of memory dedicated to those programs?

Leopard doesn't use anywhere near a gig. The 2Gb is more than capable to run all of those things listed and more.

I did say 512-1GB and it does just that. After running your computer for a good amount of time a lot processes happen and the wired amount does increase a bit but I was just generalizing a broad spectrum however you are correct, my Leopard hasn't gone much over 600MB.

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but dictionary is slow as **** on my Macbook Pro under Leopard...

Runs pretty much instantly on my first series Mac Pro running the latest version of Leopard and all updates applied. Even while rendering a 3D image.

Even with wiki off it still runs INCREDIBLY slow for me. Last night I was looking up a word with just itunes open and no songs playing and it took over 20 secs to load.. 😡

It was running insanely slow for me as well, I couldn't look up a word without getting the RWoD. Turning off Wikipedia did the trick though!

it was also extremely slow on my new imac and disabling wikipedia fixed it for me, too. thanks for the tip. i'd like to use that resource in dictionary but not with that bug.

I haven't launched the Dictionary app in forever, I just use the Dashboard widget which has always been quite snappy.
