Arrange by kind with finder in list view

I would really like my files to be divided up into folders and files when viewing them. I can achieve this in "icon" view but the "arrange by" option appears disabled in "list" view. what gives? is there anyway around this?? I'm running 10.5.1
 
When you are in list view, you can click on the "Kind" Column header and it will re-sort the list either A-Z or Z-A by type; folders will be grouped together, albeit not always at the very top of the list. Does that help?
 
yes! thank you. now the next question is: can I make this the default arrangement in list view?
