The 6 months you are talking about --- is just the period in which the carrier can charge you for the unlocking fee when you buy the phone. You can either buy the iphone right now --- sit on it for 6 months --- and ask for the unlocking code for free. Or you can buy the iphone right now and pay 100 euro for the unlocking code right now.

That sounds very reasonable. I suspect that for £70 (approximately) many people in the U.K. would pay for the unlocking code.

Well it's more complicated than just the 100 euro.

You either have to sign a 2 year contract with Orange France or pay 750 euro for a totally unlocked iphone right now.
